SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, June 18 for a Falcon 9 launch of 28 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Liftoff is targeted for 1:38 a.m. ET, with backup opportunities available until 5:38 p.m. ET. If needed, additional opportunities are also available on Thursday, June 19 starting at 1:16 a.m. ET.
A live webcast of this mission will begin about five minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the new X TV app.
This is the fifth flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched SES O3b mPOWER-E, Crew-10, Bandwagon-3, and one Starlink mission.
Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

US disbands undisclosed Russia pressure group – Reuters

US President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly halted the work of a special task force that was developing strategies to pressure Russia, Reuters claimed on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.
The inter-agency workgroup, the existence of which had not previously been disclosed, was reportedly established earlier this spring as part of Trump’s efforts to speed up peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
The task force had been examining measures such as increasing economic leverage over former Soviet republics and conducting intelligence operations to undermine Russian influence.
However, it reportedly lost momentum in May, when the US president refused to adopt a more confrontational stance toward Moscow, officials told Reuters.
“It lost steam toward the end because the president wasn’t there. Instead of doing more, maybe he wanted to do less,” one of the officials said.
The agency noted that the effort was never formally shut down, but effectively stalled after a sweeping purge at the White House National Security Council several weeks ago removed most of the officials involved, including the entire team dealing with the Ukraine conflict.
Reuters noted that it is unclear if Trump himself was aware of the working group’s formation or subsequent dissolution.
The US president has repeatedly insisted that only Russia and Ukraine can negotiate a resolution to the ongoing conflict, and has consistently sought to pressure the leaders of both countries to engage in peace talks.
Although he has threatened additional sanctions on Russia as part of his efforts to mediate the conflict, Trump has also sought to rebuild Washington’s relations with Moscow and has already held several phone calls with President Vladimir Putin, all of which he has described as positive.
On Monday, during the G7 summit in Canada, Trump also publicly advocated for Russia’s return to the G8 format, arguing that excluding Moscow from major international forums was a strategic mistake.
Russian officials have repeatedly expressed appreciation for Trump’s peace efforts and attempts to rebuild relations with Moscow, which had hit their lowest point in decades under former US President Joe Biden.
However, Moscow has rejected the idea of returning to the G8 format, stating that it has “lost its relevance” and no longer reflects current global economic dynamics. Instead, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed to the G20 as a more representative format.

Trump snubs Zelensky meeting

US President Donald Trump has left the G7 summit in Canada early, despite having a scheduled meeting with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, the White House has said, citing the recent escalation in the Middle East.
White House Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that the US leader is departing the gathering in Kananaskis, Alberta, “so he can attend to many important matters.”
She also wrote on X that Trump “had a great day at the G7,” but “because of what’s going on in the Middle East, [he] will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.”
Zelensky had been scheduled to meet Trump on the sidelines of the summit in what was widely perceived as an opportunity to urge the US to ramp up sanctions against Russia and approve more weapons shipments to Kiev.
Trump, however, has been reluctant to increase pressure on Moscow, with media reports suggesting that he is frustrated with both Ukraine and Russia, and is considering withdrawing from the peace process altogether.
French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that Trump’s early departure was linked to ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Iran.
“There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange,” Macron said. “The US assured they will find a ceasefire, and since they can pressure Israel, things may change.”
Trump, however, pushed back on the claim shortly afterward, rebuking “publicity seeking” Macron for what he saw as disseminating falsehoods.
“He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that,” he wrote on the Truth Social network.
The recent Middle East escalation kicked off after US–Iran talks on a potential nuclear deal ended up at an impasse.
Iran has dismissed a US demand to completely eliminate its uranium enrichment capabilities while not ruling out a potential agreement in itself.
Tehran has also insisted it is not seeking to create a nuclear weapon, and that its atomic program is for peaceful purposes only.
As the diplomatic process stalled, Israel last week launched several waves of strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing top commanders and nuclear scientists.
Iran retaliated with massive missile strikes on Israel, while the US has backed West Jerusalem’s right to self-defense while reinforcing its assets in the region to protect its long-time ally. Washington, nevertheless, urged Tehran to return to talks.

North Korea to send military personnel to Russia – senior official

North Korea will deploy thousands of military personnel to Russia’s Kursk Region to aid in demining operations and reconstruction efforts, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu said on Tuesday.
North Korean troops fought alongside Russian forces to liberate Kursk Region from a cross-border Ukrainian incursion that lasted from August 2024 to April 2025.
Shoigu described the new deployment as an extension of North Korea’s military support to Russia under the two countries’ strategic partnership treaty.
“[North Korean leader] Kim Jong-un has made the decision to send to Russia 1,000 mine clearance specialists to sweep the Russian territory,” he said.
He added that an additional 5,000 military engineers will help “rebuild infrastructure destroyed by the occupants.”
Ukraine launched its large-scale incursion into the region last August, in what officials in Kiev hyped at the time as a blow to Russia.
However, Russian forces quickly turned the tide, and by the time Ukrainian forces were fully expelled in late April, the Defense Ministry in Moscow estimated that Kiev’s forces had sustained more than 76,000 casualties in the operation.
On Monday, Moscow and Kiev completed a series of exchanges of the remains of fallen soldiers. Russia returned the remains 6,060 Ukrainian soldiers, many from the Kursk campaign, while Ukraine handed over 78.
The Russian Defense Ministry said it held an additional 1,248 bodies that it was prepared to hand over to Kiev.
Weeks before the Kursk incursion, Russia and North Korea signed a strategic partnership treaty, which included provisions for mutual defense in the event of foreign aggression.
President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the involvement of North Korean soldiers in repelling Ukrainian forces from Kursk Region and
hailed them as heroes and “brothers-in-arms” alongside Russian troops when the joint defensive operation was over.
Shoigu said he has been making regular visits to Pyongyang in recent months due to what he described as “the intensive pace of the implementation” of the partnership agreement.
He noted that maintaining momentum “requires constant attention and course-correction on all levels.”

The Russian military has launched a series of attacks on Ukraine’s defense industrial sector, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said that the group strike involving high-precision air-, land-, and sea-based weapons, as well as drones, targeted military-industrial facilities in Kiev Region and the Ukrainian-controlled part of Zaporozhye Region.
“The goal of the strikes has been accomplished. All designated targets have been hit,” officials said.
Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky claimed on social media that more than 440 drones and 32 missiles targeted facilities in Odessa, Chernigov, Zhitomir, Kirovograd, and Nikolaev, killing 15 people and injuring 75.
He urged “the US and Europe to… finally react the way a civilized society reacts to terrorists.”
Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua has reported, citing service members, that one of the strikes destroyed an ammunition depot in Kiev Region.
It also claimed that a dormitory of an aviation institute in the Ukrainian capital had been hit.
Unverified videos on social media showed at least four powerful explosions in Kiev that could be seen from kilometers away.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klimenko said that the attacks had damaged several buildings, including educational institutions, and critical infrastructure facilities.
In recent weeks, Russia has been launching strikes on Ukrainian military-related facilities after Kiev significantly ramped up drone strikes into the country.
Moscow has described the recent escalation as Kiev’s attempt to derail the ongoing Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Russian officials have insisted that the attacks are never aimed at civilians.

Fatalities reported after Ukrainian attack on Russian city

Russian civilians have reportedly been killed and at least ten injured by a Ukrainian strike on a residential district in the city of Donetsk, the city’s mayor, Alexey Kulemzin, said on Tuesday.
“Three or four hits” on peaceful areas, damaging a residential building as well as two public utilities, had taken place, he said, adding that the “damage is quite significant.”
Ambulances had evacuated ten people who were injured in the shelling, Kulemzin stated, noting “preliminary information about fatalities.”
Kulemzin had previously warned residents about loud blasts in the city, urging caution. The TASS news agency later reported at least ten powerful explosions in the capital of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
TASS reported that a multi-story residential building has been destroyed and several dozen vehicles damaged in the strike. The outlet’s correspondent has also claimed that at least one person was killed in the attack and three were badly injured.
Ukrainian forces have regularly targeted residential neighborhoods in Donetsk throughout the ongoing conflict. Just days earlier, a unmanned aerial vehicles injured six teenagers and two adults, according to the DPR’s war crimes documentation department.
The incident occurred during a series of drone attacks that also damaged homes and vehicles in the area. City officials report dozens of civilian injuries in Donetsk each month as a result of shelling attributed to Ukrainian forces.

Almost 150 Ukrainian drones downed overnight over Russia – MOD

Russia’s air defenses have destroyed 147 incoming Ukrainian drones overnight, including several targeting Moscow, the country’s Defense Ministry has said.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said the intercepts occurred across several areas, including Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, Tver, Lipetsk, Oryol, Tambov, Tula, and Moscow regions.
In total, 198 drones were intercepted between 8:00pm on Monday and 7:00am on Tuesday, according to the ministry. Officials have not provided any data on the damage or casualties incurred due to the raids.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that the Russian capital was targeted by two drones, both of which were downed before reaching their destinations.
He added that emergency services are working at the sites where the drone debris fell.
The drone raids led to temporary suspensions at several major airports, including key Moscow hubs. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency said flights at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, Sheremetyevo, Kaluga, Nizhny Novgorod, and Tambov airports were suspended for safety reasons.
Meanwhile, officials in Kursk Region, which borders Ukraine, said that a total of 21 incoming drones had been shot down.
On Tuesday, Rodion Miroshnik, Russia’s ambassador-at-large, reported that nearly 70 civilians, including 14 children, had been victimized by Kiev’s FPV drone strikes over the past week.
“The armed formations of Ukraine deliberately and intentionally directed drones at civilians and civilian objects,” he told TASS.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has significantly ramped up drone strikes targeting Russia. Moscow has accused Kiev of attempting “terrorist” attacks on the country’s railway infrastructure, which have led to civilian fatalities.
According to the Kremlin, the indiscriminate raids are intended to derail direct bilateral talks.
Last week, President Vladimir Putin stated that Russian forces had shot down more than 80,000 aerial targets, most of which are drones, since the escalation of the conflict in 2022.

Iran launches 10th phase of Op. True Promise III with massive missile, drone barrage

Iranian armed forces have launched the next and tenth phase of Operation True Promise III by firing a barrage of missiles and drones toward the occupied territories.
The new phase began at around 7:10 pm local time on Tuesday, following nine previous phases since June 13 that have inflicted heavy blows on the occupying regime.
Launches in the new wave were carried out from various parts of the country, with both missiles and drones aimed at the occupied territories.
In the new wave of retaliatory attacks, a large-scale missile operation was carried out against the Israeli air force bases, which are the origin points for fighter jet flights toward the country.
Operation True Promise III, which was launched on Friday night, is being carried out under the code name “Ya Ali ibn Abi Talib.”
It comes in response to the assassination of several high-ranking Iranian military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians, including women and children.
The tenth phase of the operation came less than 24 hours after the impactful wave of ballistic missiles and drones struck multiple targets in different parts of the occupied territories.
After receiving heavy blows in the previous eight phases of the operation, the Israeli regime authorities on Monday banned the live aerial feeds of the Iranian operation.
Earlier on Tuesday, in a statement, Iranian armed forces announced that over the past 24 hours, 28 types of hostile aircraft were identified, intercepted, and shot down by the country's integrated air defense network.
It further said that the confrontation between the country's air defenses and the invading aircraft, an enemy Hermes spy drone that was attempting to spy on sensitive locations, was identified, intercepted, and shot down by air defense with precision fire.

Two Drones Shot Down Over Erbil by Coalition Forces

Coalition forces intercepted and shot down two drones over Erbil province on Tuesday, according to security sources.
The first drone was brought down over Mastawa village, followed shortly by a second drone over Pirdawd village. No casualties or material damage were reported.
Security forces have reached both crash sites and are conducting investigations into the origin and intent of the drones.
The incident follows the downing of another drone in Erbil early Monday morning, bringing the total to three drones shot down in the past two days.

Russian Embassy in Sweden Says Drone Dumped Paint on Its Trade Mission

Russia’s Embassy in Sweden on Tuesday claimed that an unidentified drone dropped paint on the grounds of its trade mission in Stockholm overnight.
“The drone crossed the airspace over the area and dropped a bag of paint on the ground in front of the main entrance to the Trade Representation,” the embassy said in a statement.
It accused Swedish authorities of failing to ensure the embassy’s security under international law.
The trade mission, which operates under the Russian Embassy in Stockholm, assists Russian exporters and businesses seeking access to the Swedish market.
“The attack continues a series of similar incidents recently carried out against the Russian mission in Sweden, compromising staff safety and damaging property,” the embassy said.
Last month, Russia’s Foreign Ministry claimed its embassy in Stockholm had been subjected to at least 15 “drone attacks” since May 2024.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that Swedish authorities may have “authorized” the acts of vandalism on Russian diplomatic property in the country.
Swedish police said they launched a preliminary investigation into one such incident last November and would examine possible links to an earlier case of vandalism at Sweden’s Embassy in Moscow.

This month, Ukraine pulled off its own Pearl Harbor, decimating more than 40 of Russia’s strategic bombers worth more than $7 billion. This despite lacking an air force.
The attack was a masterclass in asymmetric warfare. It involved 117 explosive drones, hidden inside wooden sheds, quietly trucked to remote Russian bases from Siberia and the Arctic, then unleashed in coordinated waves.
Flash back to early December 2024, when strange lights hovered over New Jersey skies. Residents flooded 911 and social media with reports. But what followed was worse: government paralysis.
No one — not the Federal Aviation Administration, not the FBI, not Gov. Phil Murphy (D) — could say what the drones were, how many there were or where they came from.
Instead, they gaslit the public, blaming the sightings on helicopters and meteors.
We have seen this movie before, most recently in the early days of the COVID-19 crisis, when government obfuscation and lack of coordination between local, state and federal agencies generated confusion, outrage and chaos.
After the New Jersey drone debacle, we should all be sounding alarm bells about our unpreparedness in the face of this new threat.
Complacency comes in a variety of forms — misplaced hope, denial, fatalism — but the results are always the same.
It leaves you flat-footed in the face of imminent threats. It prevents you from doing what needs to be done to avoid a worst-case outcome.
The antidote to complacency is vigilance, that is, having a plan for what we will do if suicide drone attacks start.
Such a plan would start by breaking down the walls between silos such as the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, FAA, FBI and others within the federal government itself.
It would hard-wire the broken connections with law enforcement at the state and local level. It would establish accountability: Who is going to keep watch around the clock, assess the threat in real time and notify everyone with a need to know?
The agency with the mandate to build this kind of nationwide, coordinated response is FEMA. That’s what makes the president’s proposal to dismantle it not just misguided, but dangerous.
Now more than ever, we need a powerful, professional FEMA to unify efforts across government and industry to confront the asymmetric threats of this new era.
My new 9/11 nightmare begins on another crisp autumn morning in some not-too-distant September, when New York (or Washington, Los Angeles, Houston or Seattle) awakens to the menacing hum of unmanned aerial vehicles hovering in a clear blue sky.
Each is remotely controlled and carries a devastating payload intended for dozens, if not hundreds, of soft targets across the city. The attack is silent, remote and everywhere at once.
It is the responsibility of the federal government to envision and prepare for this worst-case scenario. Innovative solutions are needed, whether to create an impenetrable dome, new jamming technology or high-tech weaponry to shoot drones out of the sky.
Only businesses and certain parts of the military have this kind of know-how, and only FEMA can build the public-private ventures we will need to get it done.
I have no doubt that the U.S. will get it done. The only question is whether it does it the easy way, by figuring it out beforehand, or the hard way, in the chaotic aftermath of a 9/11 redux.

Mysterious 'Jellyfish UFO' spotted over US desert as scientists reveal its origin

A strange jellyfish-like phenomenon was spotted streaking across the California sky Monday night.
While the unusual 'UFO' sighting baffled many locals from the Mojave desert to Los Angeles's South Bay, scientists say there were no extraterrestrials involved in creating the jellyfish - it was an Elon Musk rocket.
SpaceX's latest Falcon 9 rocket mission lifted off at 11:36pm ET Monday night from Vandenberg Space Force Station in California.
A few minutes into the flight, the rocket's exhaust interacted with the atmosphere, creating a visible cloud of condensed water vapor.
Since the launch took place right after sunset, around 8:36pm PT, the sun illuminated the crystalized exhaust plume, resulting in a spectacular sight for millions on the ground.
Californians posted images of the rocket soaring over the state on X, even as far south as Riverside, over 200 miles southeast of the Vandenberg launch site.
SpaceX's lead avionics systems engineer, Cameron Gable, captured the jellyfish phenomenon as the rocket traveled past Los Angeles County's South Bay.
The mission, dubbed Starlink 15-9, saw SpaceX launch its latest batch of Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit.
The jellyfish phenomenon, also known as a 'vapor cone' or 'shock collar,' occurs when the localized air pressure around the rocket drops, causing the air temperature to decrease and water vapor to condense into visible clouds.
Monday's giant jellyfish display started just a few minutes into the flight and was visible to anyone in the Southern California area.
It's not the first time a SpaceX rocket has produced the jellyfish effect. In October 2022, sky watchers caught another Falcon 9 rocket creating the same vapor trail during a similar mission to deploy new satellites.
Monday's Falcon 9 launch was the latest mission in SpaceX's ongoing efforts to expand its Starlink 'constellation,' aiming to enhance global internet coverage.
SpaceX has already conducted 75 launches in 2025, mainly for Starlink missions. The mission also used a reusable first-stage engine, a hallmark of SpaceX's design philosophy aimed at reducing the cost of spaceflights.
SpaceX captured the moment on their live broadcast when the reusable engine safely landed back on Earth to be used again in future missions.
Monday's mission was the 200th from the company's Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg.
The remote-controlled reusable rocket engine made a perfect touchdown on SpaceX's droneship in the Pacific Ocean about eight minutes after launch, making it the 463rd engine returned to Earth.
While the jellyfish effect may seem like a bizarre UFO to the untrained eye, it's common among spaceflights. Social media users regularly capture rockets giving off the jellyfish trail from hundreds of miles away.
One X user in Phoenix, Arizona, was able to spot a similar jellyfish during a June 2024 launch. That mission also involved a Falcon 9 launching from Vandenberg, which was over 500 miles away.
When a rocket launches, it expels a large amount of exhaust gases at high speeds. These gases, primarily composed of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other rocket launch byproducts, expand rapidly as they exit the rocket's nozzle.
As the exhaust plume expands, it encounters cooler, denser air in Earth's upper atmosphere. This can cause the water vapor in the exhaust to condense into visible clouds, forming a balloon-like shape around the rocket.
The high speed of the rocket can also create shock waves, further shaping the exhaust into distinctive patterns, creating the jellyfish effect.
SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets, with their frequent launch schedule and reusable first stages, often trigger this effect due to their design and the typical launch times chosen for optimal visibility.
However, any rocket launch around the world can potentially give off a jellyfish trail, especially when the conditions are right for the exhaust to give off a dramatic display in the atmosphere.

Mysterious Russian 'Doomsday signal' linked to nuclear war and alien invasion

An eerie radio transmission emanating from Russia, ominously dubbed 'the Doomsday signal', has been broadcasting since the Soviet Union and Cold War era but its purpose remains a mystery as no one has yet cracked its code.
The continuous broadcast of a dull hum at 25 tones per minute, originating from behind the Iron Curtain, has been ongoing 24/7 for decades. Occasionally, a voice interrupts the monotonous buzzing to transmit a message in Russian.
Known as UVB-76, the creepy signal's constant coded messages, believed to be utilized by the Russian military, have baffled both experts and amateur detectives.
Thought to have first aired in the mid-70s - over half a century ago, some speculate that the 'Doomsday signal' is connected to the onset of nuclear war or even a potential extraterrestrial invasion.
Despite advancements in technology favoring other instant communication methods, it's still believed that the transmission is used militarily.
Several voice commands have been heard through the station since Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reports the Express.
However, the signal, despite its consistency, has had its share of anomalies or possible distractions in the past.
Occasionally, distant chatter and other background noises can be detected behind the dominant droning, suggesting the buzzing originates from a device near an active microphone.
Many believe that on November 3, 2001, a conversation in Russian was inadvertently captured by the microphone and broadcast in the background.
The brief exchange seemed mundane, with many agreeing that the translated words were: "I am 143. Not receiving the generator […] that stuff comes from hardware room."
Professor of Electronic & Radio Engineering David Stupples has theorized that if the codes did originate from Putin's government, they likely serve a sinister purpose.
"If it is the Russian government, it wouldn't be for peaceful purposes,' hew said. "They may be just reserving the channel for air defense or some form of defense.
"If they don't actually use it, someone will poach it. They are keeping the channel available by broadcasting and saying 'this is ours'."

Why did Juan make a special point of calling the advance knowledge of the recent NATO attack on Russia a secret held by someone or some group within our intelligence agencies tantamount to a “coup in progress”?
If the riots were planned and triggered in advance then so was the Israeli attack on Iran. Riots were planned to expose Newsom and Bass incompetence.
If Putin knew and Trump knew about the NATO attack why did they allow it to happen? Cui bono/ who gains?
Iran has had “nukes” since before I interviewed expert nuclear scientist Keshe and the U.S. government knows this. So why is Hegseth pulling an identical targeting move to the invasion of Iraq?

A quasi-war with Iran allows Trump to establish martial law in the U.S. and stop the summer of riots in their tracks.

Rioters in LA (and other cities are identified by frequency signature, something we got from the grey ETs many years ago. They don’t need to see faces or use facial recognition to track and trace the rioters.
What the riots do is filter the really bad illegals from those that are merely desperate to escape the cartels.
What is the “war” in Ukraine really being used to cover up?

Metallic Spherical UFO Sighted Flying Over Shayukou Reservoir In Beijing, China June 5, 2025

The witness stated the following: " On June 5th, around 7 PM, I was walking and taking photos of the scenery on the shallow area of Shayukou Reservoir.
At first, I saw a metallic spherical object flying eastward above the water surface from the west side of the reservoir.
At that time, it seemed to hover occasionally before continuing to fly, and it disappeared behind a hill. I initially thought it was just a strange hydrogen balloon and didn’t pay much attention.
Around 7:30 PM, as I was about to head back, the sphere reappeared in the south. There was no wind at all, and the evening was very quiet.
Surprisingly, the sphere was able to fly at varying altitudes, hovering midway before continuing to fly. I watched for a few minutes and became certain it was definitely not a balloon or a drone.
I then started filming, but the object was strange—every time I filmed for a short while, it would move behind the trees. Whenever I thought it had completely disappeared, it would reappear.
This continued intermittently for over ten minutes, during which I recorded three video clips. After the last clip, it disappeared completely."

That Ominous Black Iceberg Probably Isn’t a Sign From the Aliens

If you’re a fan of ancient Lovecraftian horrors residing in the coldest, darkest regions of the world, you’re going to love the mysterious black iceberg.
Found off the frigid coast of Newfoundland, a massive obsidian iceberg has emerged from the depths, ready to fill your mind with cosmic horror.
As reported by the CBC, the iceberg was photographed back in May by fisherman Hallur Antoniussen. It was spotted about 100 miles offshore. And it’s not your average floating frozen cube.
Antoniussen, a man with half a century of navigating around icebergs, said the thing was roughly three times the size of its bluish-whitish peers and shaped almost like a diamond.
Antoniussen told the CBC that he’s seen plenty of icebergs with rocks in them, giving them the occasional dark hue, but he’s never seen one as deeply richly completely black as this one.
Again, he’s a seasoned veteran of these seas. This iceberg in particular was so odd, so out of the ordinary, that he responded the only way he knew how: by running to his cabin to grab his phone so he could post a picture of it on Facebook.
The picture went viral, and theories poured in. Maybe it’s a frozen oil slick? Maybe it was a bunch of frozen, tightly compressed dirt? A giant alien egg? Sure! Why not?
We’re still in the “no bad ideas” phase of this…thing’s explanation. Experts don’t have a definitive answer as to what this black diamond iceberg could be, but some legitimate theories are floating around.
Lev Tarasov, a physicist and glacier expert at Memorial University in Newfoundland, theorized that ancient volcanic eruptions may have dusted the ice long ago.
That ash then got locked in, compressed over centuries, and eventually broke free to give modern fishermen a proper fright.
Again, not much is definitively known about this thing, but one thing that’s just a little bit freaky is its estimated age. Tarasov explained to the CBC that this thing could be anywhere between 1,000 to 100,000 years old, possibly dating back to the Ice Age.
Remember, “tip of the iceberg” is more than just a turn of phrase. It’s a very literal thing that we have to keep in mind with this black iceberg. This freaky, bizarre thing we’re looking at is only probably a tiny fraction of a much larger mystery.
It’s probably not aliens.
Probably not an ancient monster that was sentenced to spend eternity in an icy prison at the bottom of the ocean but climate change broke it free of its confines and then a fishing boat pulled up next to it to get a closer look at this mysterious black iceberg and then a giant glowing red eye opened up inside. Probably just some old dirt or something.
Either way, whether it’s ultimately deadly or boring, it’s a gorgeous—somewhat ominous—sight to behold.
