Laden Frontline VLCC collides with shadow suezmax tanker off Khorfakkan

by Sam Chambers June 17, 2025

A collision occurred at 1:14 am Dubai time overnight between two tankers, the Antigua Barbuda-flagged Adalynn suezmax, part of the shadow fleet, and the Liberian-flagged Front Eagle VLCC, near the Khorfakkan anchorage in the Gulf of Oman. The impact resulted in a fire aboard the Adalynn and prompted the swift evacuation of its entire crew.

The incident highlights the persistent navigational challenges in one of the world’s busiest maritime arteries with clear GPS spoofing involved in the run-up to the accident, and comes at a time when ship operators are under increased pressure in the region thanks to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

According to MarineTraffic data, the five-year-old Front Eagle was laden with crude oil and en route to Zhoushan, China, at the time of the incident. The 23-year-old Adalynn had just departed from anchorage in ballast when the collision took place approximately 22 nautical miles east of Khorfakkan. While initial reports from social media and some maritime security firms suggested a third vessel might have been involved, playback data indicates that the collision was exclusively between these two ships.

Following the collision, the Front Eagle reported its status as Not Under Command.

A spokesperson for Frontline said that following the incident immediate action was taken to extinguish a fire on deck of the Front Eagle.

“A full investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the maritime incident. This is a navigational incident and not related to the current regional conflict,” the spokesperson told Splash.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the Adalynn sustained damage to its bunker tanks, leading to the onboard fire.

The UAE National Guard swiftly responded to the distress call. Early this morning, the Coast Guard of the National Guard successfully evacuated all 24 crewmembers from the Adalynn. The crew was safely transported from the incident site to the port of Khorfakkan using search and rescue boats. Authorities have confirmed that all crewmembers from both vessels are safe, and no casualties have been reported.

Officials state that, at present, no foul play is suspected, and the fires have been contained. An investigation into the cause of the collision is underway.

This incident occurs amidst recent warnings from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the US-led Combined Maritime Force’s Joint Maritime Information Centre (JMIC) regarding increased electronic interference in the region, particularly near Iran’s port of Bandar Abbas, which has affected vessels’ ability to accurately transmit AIS positional data. Voyage playback shows the Front Eagle’s trip was clearly hit by GPS spoofing.

I remember the Iranian fighter (-14 ironically) that flew close enough under the airliner to merge radar returns

I remember a course change to head for the cruiser

I remember the passengers being all male and many suspicions they were not alive before the airliner took off

Corporate Parent Planning Network Spinoff for ‘Declining Asset’ CNN: ‘Tears on the Horizon’

by Mike LaChance Jun. 16, 2025

The hits just keep coming for CNN. The far left network is facing being spun off by its corporate parent company Warner Bros./Discovery sometime in 2026.

They view the network as a ‘declining asset’ and are going to split it into two entities.

The people who are described as on-air ‘talent’ have destroyed what was once considered the foundation of cable news. Over the last decade they have shredded not only their own credibility, but the reputation of the network. They have totally earned what is coming.

FOX News reports:

CNN has ‘tears on the horizon’ as Warner Bros. Discovery plots network spinoff, industry insiders say

CNN has “tears on the horizon” after Warner Bros. Discovery announced last week that it will split into two companies by separating its studios and streaming business from cable TV networks, according to media insiders.

The corporate split, which is expected to be completed by mid-2026, will have significant ramifications for CNN, which is being treated as a declining asset that weighed down WBD’s shinier businesses.

A little over three years ago, Discovery Inc. merged with WarnerMedia to create Warner Bros. Discovery to much fanfare as CEO David Zaslav touted the company as “the best place for impactful storytelling.” Things didn’t exactly work out, and Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels will lead the spun-off group of cable assets, including CNN, while Zaslav keeps the studios and streaming business.

“Putting a bean counter as CEO sends a very clear message: this is finally the beginning of the long-overdue correction of the [Jeff] Zucker-era excesses,” a media insider close to CNN told Fox News Digital….

“It’s not just the overpriced talent. It’s the overpriced producers. The overpriced executives. The superfluous reporters who barely are on the air. All will either be exited or forced to take massive pay cuts,” the media insider said.

Here’s a reminder of why CNN deserves to go the way of the dinosaurs.

It’s not a news network. It’s a propaganda outlet for the far left.

Oil Freight Rates Jump in Mideast as Iran Conflict Fans Risk

Bloomberg June 17, 2025

(Bloomberg) — Oil-shipping rates for Middle Eastern routes have spiked after some tanker owners and managers paused offering vessels as they assess risks from Israel’s conflict with Iran, fueling concerns over flows from the region.

Key rates for supertankers voyaging from the Middle East to East Asia rose almost 60% in less than a week, according to shipbrokers and charterers, as exporters who had been trying to book ships were met with few offers. They asked not to be identified as they’re not authorized to speak publicly.

Meanwhile, some owners with tankers that had been provisionally chartered as of Friday, pending confirmation of the booking, chose not to extend the agreements into the weekend, one of them said.

The global oil market has been transfixed by the conflict in the Middle East, with Israeli strikes on Iranian energy and nuclear infrastructure roiling prices. While the likelihood of significant supply disruptions may be remote at this stage, the stability of shipping in and around the Middle East will be closely watched. The region is home to about a third of the world’s production, and major exporters such as Saudi Arabia have limited scope to divert exports if needed.

As hostilities have intensified, tanker owners are monitoring conditions for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway that links the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. Though ship diversions haven’t yet been spotted, owners are holding back on fixing new voyages in the Gulf, setting the stage for higher freight rates and the possibility of disruptions.

The benchmark rate for a supertanker capable of hauling 2 million barrels of crude from the Middle East to China — the TD3C route — jumped to 70 to 71 Worldscale points on Monday, up from about 44 last Thursday, before Israel struck Iran, according to shipbrokers. Worldscale points are a percentage of an underlying flat rate, which is set for each major route at the start of the year.

On a per-day basis, chartering costs were near $46,000 on Monday, according to data from the Baltic Exchange. That’s up by more than $12,000 from the prior session, the biggest gain since February last year.

Forward-freight agreements — a derivative that allows buyers to lock in future rates — have increased as an indication of caution across the sector. FFAs for the TD3C route rose to around $14.50 a ton at one point on Monday, compared with about $11 before Israel’s attacks on Iran.
