On June 18, 2025, Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, was hacked, with over $90 million in cryptocurrencies drained from its wallets. The attack was claimed by a pro-Israel hacking group called Gonjeshke Darande ("Predatory Sparrow"), who described it as a politically motivated cyberattack targeting Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The stolen funds, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Ripple, Solana, Tron, and Ton, were sent to cryptographic addresses with anti-government messages, likely burner addresses the hackers couldn’t control, suggesting the funds were destroyed rather than stolen for profit. Nobitex confirmed unauthorized access to its hot wallets, and the exchange went offline. This followed another cyberattack by the same group on Iran’s state-owned Bank Sepah earlier that week.
