I saw it here yesterday a few hours before picrel showed up, and now every right wing talking head is saying it. Why, because they have been making the exact opposite argument for years and now they have been told it is going to happen and we need to close ranks behind Trump. The FOX commentators are already starting the 'Boots On the Ground' phase.

Well, guess what, Trumps handling of COVID showed he has not in control, the election showed he was not in control, and this crisis shows he is not in control. So no, I Do Not Trust Trump.

like it or not, it was and is a representee democracy. True it is not a pure democracy, but republic in its Latin state just means 'public good' or 'public affair' or in modern terms 'country' . The reason the founding fathers chose republic was they wanted to signify that we were modeling the country on the Roman Republic, which was a Representative Democracy.

The more modern understanding of Republic is:

1. A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.

2. A nation that has such a political order.

3. A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them.

You may be thinking of because Republic is often conflated with the Roman Republic and are enamored with the glory of Rome that the founding fathers where out to recreate the Roman ethos. What seems clear is that the Founding Fathers when to great lengths to not repeat the inherent flaws of the Roman Republic that allowed it to become the Roman Empire. They failed, we have been the US Empire (just did not change the name) since WWII , maybe since we took over the Philippines and Cuba in 1898 and maybe since Lincoln "saved" the country. We now are at the point where large parts of the population are wanting to formalize the president as emperor (Dems wanted Obama, Reps want Trump) but probably would leave the name president is place.
