1964
The Shah exiled Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1964 after arresting him for his vocal opposition to the Shah's "White Revolution" reforms, which Khomeini criticized as a foreign-inspired attack on Islam.
During his exile, Khomeini coordinated opposition against the Shah's regime, first from Iraq and later from France after being deported by Saddam Hussein in 1978.
