Pentagon & US national intelligence chiefs sidelined from Iran‑Israel discussions – media

President Trump is reportedly relying on a small group of lower-profile aides as he weighs military intervention in the Middle East

President Donald Trump has excluded Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard from high-level discussions on the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, NBC News and The Washington Post have reported, citing senior administration officials.

Gabbard’s sidelining, according to NBC, reportedly stems from her public and internal pushback against the official US and Israeli narrative that Tehran is on the verge of acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, Hegseth has also been edged out of operational discussions, with The Washington Post reporting that two four-star generals overseeing the deployment of additional US military assets in the Middle East have taken the lead.

Trump is now said to be relying on a smaller, more experienced ‘Tier One’ advisory group – comprising Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Joint Chiefs Vice Chair General Dan Caine – which is now reportedly shaping US policy on Iran, rather than the traditional civilian defense and intelligence leadership.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell has denied the reports, insisting that Hegseth is “speaking with the President multiple times a day each day and has been with the President in the Situation Room this week.” Gabbard also told reporters that she and the president were “on the same page.”

Israel launched a large-scale bombing campaign against Iran last week, claiming Tehran was close to producing a nuclear weapon. Trump will decide whether to join the Israeli campaign “within the next two weeks,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday.

Trump meets with Steve Bannon ahead of decision to delay Iran attack

Bannon, a former White House adviser and a key voice in the anti-interventionist wing of Trump’s movement, has repeatedly warned against US involvement in another Middle East conflict.

Steve Bannon visited the White House on Thursday for a private lunch with President Donald Trump, just hours before Trump announced he would delay his decision on whether to launch a strike against Iran, reports the New York Daily News.

The lunch, rescheduled after Bannon was reportedly ill, comes at a critical moment as Trump weighs US involvement in Israel’s military campaign. “There’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran,” Trump said in a statement. “I’ll make my decision to go within the next two weeks.”

Trump's new two-week timeline marks a significant departure the previous time line which was anticipated by many pundits of just a few days. The pause also coincides with planned talks between European diplomats and Iranian officials this weekend

US envoy Steve Witkoff is not expected to attend.

Bannon, a former White House adviser and a key voice in the anti-interventionist wing of Trump’s movement, has repeatedly warned against US involvement in another Middle East conflict.

His meeting with Trump comes as internal debate's spaked up in recent weeks among Trump allies over the extent of American engagement and avoiding involvement in what have been called "forever wars."

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt urged Americans to “trust in Trump” as the former president considers his options.

"Nobody should be surprised by the President's position that Iran absolutely cannot obtain a nuclear weapon. He has been unequivocally clear about this for decades, not just as president, not just as a presidential candidate, but also as a private citizen," she added.

Travellers at Sydney international arrivals urged to check for measles symptoms after confirmed case of highly-infectious disease on Vietnam Airlines flight

NSW Health has urged anyone who travelled through the arrivals of a major international airport this week to check for symptoms of measles following a confirmed case of the highly-infectious disease on a Vietnam Airlines flight.

Travellers have been urged to check for symptoms of measles after a confirmed case flew into Sydney from South East Asia while infectious this week.

The alert is for those who visited Sydney Kingsford Smith's international arrivals and baggage claim area on Monday June 16 between 8am and 9.30am.

Passengers who were on board Vietnam Airlines Flight VN773, which departed Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday June 15 at 8pm, arriving to the Harbour City the following morning at 8am, are also told to be on the lookout for any signs of the highly-contagious disease.

Symptoms include fever, cough and a runny nose, which is then followed by a distinct rash that spreads from the face to the rest of the body three to four days later.

The confirmed case had travelled to Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Despite the locations no longer posing a threat to the pubic, those who visited those areas, or have been in contact with people who have, should be alert for measles signs.

"It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until 4 July 2025," Dr Mitchell Smith, from NSW Health, said in a statement.

“It's important for people to stay vigilant if they've been exposed, and if they develop symptoms, to please call ahead to their GP or emergency department to ensure they do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients."

George Orwell revisited. Our Government keeps lying to us

Pandering to the strategic goals of the United States, which puts a target on our nation’s forehead, our Government keeps lying to us.

First, a little context, a little perspective, before getting to our government blatantly and consistently lying to us:

On January 29, 2002, five months after the 9/11 attacks, George W. Bush declared Iran, Iraq and North Korea to be the “axis of evil”. None of those countries was responsible for 9/11, but the US set about planning to invade Iraq anyway and did so the next year.

With that invasion imminent, North Korea pulled out of the nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty (NPT) in January 2003, not that its heart was ever entirely in it. In 2006, North Korea conducted its first atomic bomb test. What else is a dictator to do when the US draws a target on his forehead?

And then there are the other countries, understandably feeling threatened, and with the extra complication of their governments suffering a significant level of religious fanaticism, i.e. Iran and Israel.

Israel never bothered to sign the NPT and has built a nuclear arsenal that it neither confirms nor denies.

The trouble with Iran

Iran meanwhile, upon overthrowing the US coup-delivered Shah, found itself invaded by US backed-Iraq and eight years of war that killed some hundreds of thousands of its people, plus the rival US-guaranteed power of Saudi Arabia across the gulf, never mind byzantine Middle Eastern politics and the complications of being Shiah Persians amidst mainly Sunni Arabs and a theocracy amidst feudal dynasties.

If that wasn’t tricky enough, post-Shah Iran doesn’t recognise US-guaranteed Israel. It calls for its destruction, backing various criminal, terrorist and revolutionary groups around the place, much as the US has always done.

(It’s apparently irrelevant that the founding platform of Netanyahu’s Likud party holds that Israeli sovereignty shall always extend from Jordan to the sea and that various current ministers from harder-right parties shout the quiet bit out loud, actively implementing that policy and pursuing “ethnic cleansing” while Israel campaigns against anyone thinking of recognising Palestine.)

The result is a few decades of proxy and not-so-proxy attacks. Given all that, Iran, to greater and lesser extents, has sought to have its own nuclear weapons, prompting greater and lesser diplomatic and punitive actions by the US and Europe.

Now, for various reasons, including the advent of King Trump, Israel has declared war on Iran by way of bombs and missiles. (Heck, if you’re getting away with genocide, why not fly a few sorties against the Ayatollah?)

The nuclear threat

Amidst all the usual speculation such things generate, there’s a worrying insight from Farah N. Jan published in The Conversation.

Dr Jan claims this war is much more than yet another Middle Eastern crisis, “it marks the emergence of a dangerous new chapter in nuclear rivalries that has the potential to reshape global proliferation risks for decades to come”.

Big call. Dr Jan argues the initial Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have spiralled into the world’s first full-scale example of what she calls a “threshold war”, a new form of conflict, where

Warmongering Marles commits Australia to US war against China amid Iran mayhem

The craven appeasement of Benjamin Netanyahu by Western media and political elites has brought the world to the brink of war. Now Richard Marles says Australia’s part in a US war against China is a fait accompli.

The closest Deputy PM Richard Marles has come to war may well be a school debating stoush at Geelong Grammar but here he is today, on page 1 of Rupert Murdoch’s warmongering The Australian, committing young Australians to war against China. Should it transpire.

Our major trading partner, which has posed us no threat but buys 40% of our exports and has delivered nothing but prosperity to The Lucky Country.

Given the way things are shaping up in Europe, America and the Middle East, the spectre of World War 3 has never loomed so large. This morning Donald Trump warned Iranians to evacuate Tehran, the capital and home to 10 million people. Now there are reports of Trump seeking executive orders to invade.

There is little doubt that the Neville Chamberlains in Western governments and media, these sapless appeasers of the political and media elites, who have supported ‘our friend Israel’ and its demonic leadership of genocidaires, are culpable for the deaths of thousands (in Gaza and the West Bank, Syria, Lebanon and now Iran). They are guilty of genocide, the world’s most egregious crime, and now Israel’s attacks on Iran, in a world daily edging closer to WW3.

They could have stopped this. Cowed by Israel money and the fear of being called antisemitic, they didn’t. Who loses this? Everybody, Israel included. The first casualty of Israel’s unprovoked assault on Iran last week was a child, buried under rubble.

It is Western appeasement of the Netanyahu government which has led to this; principally the US, UK and Germany, with Australia a bit player albeit with blood dripping from its hands.

Sucked in by Benjamin Netanyahu, again, sucked in by the Israel propaganda of Iran’s nuclear program, world mainstream media again – the very people who fell for the ’40 babies beheaded’ and mass rapes of October 7 – are now running Israel’s ‘regime change’ narrative.

Plus ca change

We’ve seen it before: in Vietnam the ‘domino theory’, in Iraq the fabled WMD which turned regime change when that was found out. “Liberty, freedom and democracy” they cried, after Netanyahu sold them into that war. A million dead, a spate of world terrorism. Islamic State.

And Afghanistan, whose cause turned from Osama bin Laden to regime change to remove the Taliban. Twenty years later the Taliban were back in office.

These abysmal failures, one after another, and now we’ve got Murdoch again beating the drums of war for an attack on China.
