1953 coup in Iran, coup d’état in Iran that occurred in August 1953. Funded by the United States and the United Kingdom, it removed Mohammad Mosaddegh from power and restored Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi as Iran’s leader. Some 300 people died during fighting in Tehrān.
With its strategic location and vast oil reserves, Iran was of special interest to the United States, the United Kingdom, and other powers. Britain had established a presence in the country during World War II to protect a vital supply route to its ally the Soviet Union and to prevent the oil from falling into German hands. After the war, the United Kingdom effectively retained control over Iran’s oil through the establishment of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
This arrangement changed abruptly in 1951 when the Iranian parliament, led by Mosaddegh’s nationalist and democratically elected government, voted to nationalize the country’s oil industry. Seeing its interests thus threatened, the UK embarked on a secret campaign to weaken and destabilize Mosaddegh. At first the British government tried to convince the shah to remove Mossadegh from office by engineering a parliamentary decree, a ploy that both failed and enhanced Mosaddegh’s reputation while diminishing the shah’s. When the push to remove Mosaddegh evolved into the idea of a coup to overthrow the government, Britain, reluctant to shoulder the responsibility alone, persuaded the U.S. to join forces by playing on Cold War fears that Mosaddegh, an avowed anticommunist, was aligning himself with Tudeh, the Iranian Communist Party.
The United States took the leading role in a covert operation, called Operation Ajax, whereby CIA-funded agents were used to foment unrest inside Iran by way of the harassment of religious and political leaders and a media disinformation campaign. These efforts, formally approved by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. came to a head in August 1953 when Mosaddegh and his government were overthrown and Mohammad Reza, a pro-Western monarch, was returned to power. The coup nearly failed, however, because the shah, fearful for his throne, vacillated over signing the royal decrees the CIA had prepared to sanction the change of government. Fighting between supporters of both sides resulted in hundreds of deaths.
Mosaddegh was imprisoned for three years and then lived the rest of his life under house arrest. It is generally agreed today that the 1953 coup sowed the seeds for the Islamic Revolution of 1979, in which the shah was overthrown and went into exile. In 2013 the CIA formally disclosed its role in the coup.

FDA Halts Trials That Send Americans' Cells To China, Other 'Hostile Countries'
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 18 announced a halt to clinical trials that involve sending cells from Americans to “hostile countries” until they can confirm Americans have granted informed consent.
FDA officials said that a security rule finalized in late 2024 under the previous administration, and implemented in April, limits exports of sensitive data to China and other countries of concern, but that the rule contains an exemption for companies sending biological samples such as DNA for processing overseas as part of trials regulated by the agency.
Dr. Marty Makary, the FDA’s commissioner, and Dr. Vinay Prasad, head of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a video released by the agency that they only learned about the exception this week.
“Americans have their, can have their cells removed for cancer treatment, sent to China, where they are genetically engineered that is genetically edited, sent back to the United States, where it’s then infused back into an American,” Makary said. “And so from a pure national security standpoint, it sounds very concerning.”
Prasad said that the cells “can be engineered to be potent killers of targets that can be found anywhere” and that scientists may not be able to fully test them on their way back into the United States.
“In cases of personal health information, Americans’ identity, in cases of national security, I think we have to be extremely strict and really protect American interests here,” he added later.

Govt rebuffs investigation over Australians serving in IDF
After 14 months of monkey business the Australian Government has batted off FOI requests for advice on Australian citizens serving in Israel’s army IDF.
In politics, when you can not win – delay.
A year and a genocide ago, in April 2024, MWM correspondent and former senator Rex Patrick wrote to the Attorney-General’s (AG) Department.
Documents were requested under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act relating to the “conflict between Israel and Hamas since October 2023” and “Australian citizens serving in the Israeli Defence Force” (IDF).
After 14 months of monkey business, the published FOI shows the government chose to avoid its obligations – under domestic and international law – to investigate Australian IDF soldiers for war crimes.
It is estimated that 1000 Australians are serving with the IDF, but this FOI continues to obscure the true number.
Arrested developments? Yes. Arrested war criminals? No.
Rex requested the documents in early April 2024. Usually requests are processed within 30 days.
Later that month, the AG Department told Rex that his request covered 1330 pages of documents and could not be approved.
Rex negotiated a reduction of the FOI’s scope, and negotiated another reduction in August. A short extension was negotiated by the AG Department in April, and again in May.
After months of silence, a heavily-censored 44 pages was published.
