Middle East Tensions Drive Surge in Gulf Freight Rates as Maersk Suspends Haifa Port Calls

Ocean freight spot rates from Shanghai to the Arabian Gulf’s largest port, Jebel Ali, are surging.

Xeneta average spot rates show an increase of 55% month over month from Shanghai to Jebel Ali, prior to the conflict escalation between Israel and Iran. Rates are now $2,761 per FEU.

In a note, Peter Sand, Xeneta Chief Analyst, wrote the conflict in the Middle East has seen elevated risk and associated operational costs for ocean container shipping trades transiting the Arabian Gulf.

These costs include security measures, higher bunker fuel prices, and fuel costs as vessels use more fuel due to faster sailing through high-risk areas.

Integrated logistics provider Maersk announced Friday it is temporarily suspending port calls to Israel’s largest container port, Haifa. The port, which is operated by the Adani Group, has been targeted by Iranian missiles and has not suffered any damage. The CFO recently debunked misinformation that the port was on fire from a strike on Iranian social media.

Sand wrote that while they have not yet seen any decisive moves by carriers in announcing immediate changes on services into the Arabian Gulf, “There is clearly a serious risk of further escalation in this conflict and the potential for disruption to supply chains and a spike in freight rates.”

Flight Tracker Allegedly Spies Mysterious Chinese Transport Planes Heading for Iran

At least three transport planes from China reportedly flew to Iran in the three days after Israel began attacking Iran’s nuclear program and military command structure, their cargoes and missions unknown.

The UK Telegraph reported on Tuesday that all three of the cargo planes “flew westward along northern China, crossing into Kazakhstan, then south into Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan,” and then dropped off radar screens as they approached Iran.

All three of the planes apparently filed false flight plans that showed their destination as Luxembourg, but none of them flew anywhere near Europe. Later flights from the same region did head toward Luxembourg, which is the home base of the company that operates the aircraft, Cargolux.

Cargolux, which is partially owned by a Chinese company, on Tuesday denied its planes entered Iranian airspace. The company blamed “faulty public tracking data” for creating the appearance of the planes surreptitiously flying into Iranian airspace.

All three of the planes were Boeing 747 cargo planes, which the Telegraph noted are “commonly used for transporting military equipment and weapons, and hired to fly government contract orders.”

Analysts doubted the three planes would be carrying anything quite so provocative as Chinese military equipment for Iran, although China has long supplied Iran with ballistic missile components. China has also attempted to disguise controversial shipments of military hardware to Iran and Libya as innocuous consumer goods, only to have the deception discovered by customs officials.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday began evacuating Chinese nationals from Iran using chartered aircraft. If the three mystery planes did land in Iran, it is possible they were meant to play some role in evacuations.

Is The End Near? Top Khamenei Aide Reportedly in Talks with Russia for Possible Escape Ramp – Several Iranian Officials Finalizing Their Own Exit Plans

As Israel continues to batter Iranian military and leadership targets, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is reportedly looking for an escape route out of the country.

According to Iran International, the Ayatollah is looking for an off ramp and his sights are on Russia.

This is big news if true.

What is clear is that so far Iran has not been able to respond to the numerous attacks by the Israeli military. Israel reportedly controls the skies over much of Iran today.

Maybe the Ayatollah should run. There are many Iranians who would love to get their hands on that evil tyrant.

Iran International reported:

Iran International has obtained information indicating that Ali Asghar Hejazi, deputy chief of staff to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is in negotiations with Russian officials to secure a potential exit from Iran for himself and his family if the situation deteriorates.

According to the information, a senior Russian official has assured Hejazi that in case of escalation, Moscow would facilitate his evacuation via a secure corridor.

Other senior Iranian officials have reportedly received similar contacts, with some already finalizing their own exit routes.

An Iranian government plane reportedly landed in Oman on Wednesday.

This is where the US and Oman officials were holding their nuclear talks.

This is a very distinct sign that Iranian officials are worried and that they are backed into a corner.

There may be several planes that left for Oman.

A fourth plane is possibly also on the way to Oman.

Two days ago, Iran reported that numerous top officials were strategically assassinated by Israel since Friday’s first military strikes.

Mystery Break-In at Home of Slain Minnesota State Rep Melissa Hortman

Police are on scene and investigating a break-in and attempted burglary at the home of slain Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman.

Vance Boelter, 57, shot and killed Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband early Saturday morning.

Boelter also shot and wounded Democrat State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.

Hortman’s home had been boarded up with plywood after investigators moved out all of the evidence of the homicide.

Late Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday, an individual pried off the plywood on a back window of the Hortman home.

Investigators are unclear whether the individual stole anything. The Hortman family arrived at the home on Wednesday to see if the individual took anything of value.

NBC News reported:

Police are investigating a reported overnight break-in at the boarded-up home where Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot over the weekend, authorities said Wednesday.

Officers were alerted at 8 a.m. about the break-in at the residence where Hortman and her husband were killed on Saturday in what officials have described as a “politically motivated” shooting, according to a statement by the Brooklyn Park Police Department.

Investigators had previously processed the home as a crime scene before it was boarded up on Sunday morning, with a police trailer camera left in front, police said in a Wednesday statement.

Hortman’s family had “removed items of value from the home on Tuesday,” police said.
