Who Is Feras Hamdan? Doctor Who Allegedly Drove Congressman Off Road
Feras Hamdan, a 36-year-old Ohio doctor, turned himself in with counsel on Friday and was arrested and charged after allegedly forcing Republican Representative Max Miller off the road in a road rage incident.
According to Rocky River, Ohio, police, the incident occurred on June 15 when Hamdan allegedly tailgated Miller's vehicle, swerved erratically, and ultimately veered into his lane, causing the congressman to drive off the road to avoid a collision.
Police said Miller's wife and 2-year-old son were also in the car at the time of the incident in the suburb of Cleveland.
Rocky River Police Department confirmed to Newsweek Friday afternoon that Hamdan was a doctor. He appeared in court for arraignment earlier in the day.
The Context
While authorities have not disclosed Hamdan's alleged motive in detail, law enforcement indicated that his actions appeared intentional and targeted, prompting further legal scrutiny and public concern.
The case has sparked renewed debate over political tensions and public safety. The investigation remains ongoing, and federal charges could be considered depending on additional evidence.
What To Know
The police report says that Hamdan allegedly honked his horn, shouted threats, and made aggressive gestures toward Miller while pursuing his vehicle. Witnesses said that Hamdan repeatedly attempted to block Miller's car from changing lanes before forcing it off the road.
On the 911 call, Miller, who is Jewish, reported that a man driving a Tesla cut him off, displayed a Palestinian flag, and threatened, "I'm going to cut your throat and your daughter's," before adding, "You're a dirty Jew."
Miller could also be heard on the 911 call saying that he had a weapon on him but was "glad I didn't use it."
"Congressman Miller reported he was driving on Interstate 90 when the suspect threatened him and his family along with making antisemitic slurs," according to a press release from police. "The suspect's vehicle left the area prior to the arrival of responding officers. Congressman Miller was later interviewed by personnel from the Rocky River Police."
First reported by WKYC TV, Hamdan was arrested without incident after police identified him as the driver of the other vehicle involved. He has been charged with aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor.
The incident quickly drew national attention, especially after House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned it as "an outrageous act of political violence" against a sitting member of Congress.
Johnson described the act as part of a troubling trend of politically motivated aggression and called for the Department of Justice to investigate whether the attack violated federal civil rights laws. Miller, who represents Ohio's 7th District, is a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and has aligned himself with conservative positions in Congress.
Hamdan was listed as a family doctor with links to the Cleveland Clinic, which told Newsweek that he had been previously employed by an affiliated hospital. Newsweek also reached out to HealthExpress Urgent Care, another provider the suspect was reportedly linked with, for comment.
He received his medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas and has been in practice for 6-10 years. Hamdan has expertise in treating bronchitis, hypertension & high blood pressure, asthma, among other conditions
During his arraignment Friday at Rocky River Municipal Court, Hamdan heard the charges against him, including the accusations from Representative Miller. He entered a not guilty plea.
Hamdan requested a trial by jury, with his bond set at $500,000. He agreed to a criminal protective order preventing contact with Miller and his family.
What People Are Saying
Issa Elkhatib, Hamdan's attorney, in a statement on Facebook: "The allegations against my client, Dr. Feras Hamdan, are not only baseless and outrageous, but they also amount to defamatory attacks on his character and reputation. Dr. Hamdan is a respected physician, a devoted husband, a loving father, and an upstanding member of his community. He has no prior criminal history and has dedicated his life to serving others with integrity and compassion.
"It is reprehensible that Congressman Max Miller would exploit Dr. Hamdan's good name as a political pawn to score political points and fabricate a narrative of false victimhood."
Representative Miller, in a statement: "We know who this person is and he will face justice. As a Marine, a proud Jewish American and a staunch defender of Israel, I will not hide in the face of this blatant antisemitic violence."
U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, in a post on X: "What happened to Max this morning is yet another outrageous example of unhinged rhetoric inspiring unstable people to threaten and attack elected officials who are serving their communities. We must turn down the temperature in this country. The U.S. Capitol Police is engaged with local law enforcement to help handle this case and ensure justice is served."
House Democratic leaders said in a statement shared on Thursday: "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack on Congressman Max Miller and his family and are thankful they are safe."
What's Next
According to police, the U.S. Capitol Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio are all involved in the investigation.
