Taxpayers will be on the hook for $150 billion annually should Canada meet NATO's new defence spending target, reported CBC News.
Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed this in an interview with CNN International. "It is a lot of money," he said.
NATO members agreed to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP on Wednesday, with 3.5% going directly to the military, with 1.5% for infrastructure.
Prime Minister Carney swiftly detailed the numbers. His government added $9.3 billion to this year's Department of National Defence budget to meet the initial 2% target, raising annual military spending to $62 billion.
The Liberal government needs an extra $50 billion for defence to hit the 3.5% GDP military spending target. Carney pledged more funding in current or future federal measures.
On Tuesday, Carney announced Canada would meet spending goals by developing critical minerals and their market infrastructure. "That's something that benefits the Canadian economy but is also part of our NATO, our new NATO responsibilities."
Last year, NATO listed 12 critical minerals essential for defence, including aluminum for lightweight planes and missiles, graphite for tanks, and cobalt for jet engines and submarines.

Canadians are angry that Liberals have violated flag guidelines to promote so-called “pride” month.
In a June 22 X post, the Government of Canada, which is run by the Liberal party, shared what looks to be a digitally-created Canadian flag with rainbow colors instead of the flag’s traditional red, a modification forbidden by official guidelines.
As explained on Canada’s webpage outlining flag decorum, “the National Flag of Canada should not be written on or marked in any way, nor be covered by other objects.”
Yet the official Canada X account included such an image, while stating, “In Canada we know that diversity is our strength and we love to celebrate it! This #BeingYouDay, let it be a reminder to be authentically yourself and celebrate all the things that make you, YOU!”
Canadians on X quickly pointed out that the modified flag not only undermines Canadian values but also violates flag guidelines.
“This is an abomination of the Canadian flag,” one user wrote.
“That’s not our flag,” another declared.
“Diversity is not a strength, it does not promote cohesion once you go beyond a certain point and then causes social fractures,” said another.

A legal challenge has been launched against the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board after it suspended an elected parent council member who voiced respectful opposition to land acknowledgements.
Catherine Kronas, a parent with a student enrolled at Ancaster High Secondary School, was informed on May 22, 2025, that her participation on the school council was being “paused” due to allegations that she caused harm and violated a Code of Conduct Policy.
She has since been barred from attending council meetings.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), which is now representing Kronas, issued a legal warning to the board and called the suspension an unlawful act of censorship.
Kronas was re-elected to the school council in October 2024. At an April 9, 2025 meeting, she requested that her dissenting view on land acknowledgements be noted in the official minutes. Her remarks caused no disruption and were limited to her request that her position be recorded.
“I was taken aback by the Board’s decision to suspend me from the School Council after delivering a respectful objection,” Kronas said in a statement. “Especially given assurances made at a previous council meeting and outlined in the Council bylaws that open dialogue and diverse perspectives are welcomed.”
“By barring me from the next meeting, the Council sends a troubling message to all parents: that even respectful disagreement may be met, not with dialogue, but with disciplinary action,” she continued. “I am grateful to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms for assisting me in this matter.”
In a legal warning letter to the board, JCCF constitutional lawyer Hatim Kheir stated that Kronas’ remarks “were a reasonable and measured expression of a viewpoint held by many Canadians.”
“The Board’s decision to suspend her from the Council, which she has a right to sit on as an elected parent member, is an act of censorship that offends the right to freedom of expression,” Kheir said.
The Justice Centre is calling for Kronas to be reinstated immediately and allowed to fulfill her elected duties without further retaliation.

Three-quarters of Canadian shoppers say they are willing to pay extra for homegrown food items, yet when it comes to making a purchase, nearly two-thirds opt for a cheaper imported item over a pricier domestic one, the findings from a new report suggest.
While 75 percent of people polled by PwC Canada said they would pay a premium for locally produced food, 62 percent ultimately choose a lower-priced imported alternative.
PwC’s 2025 Voice of the Consumer Report found Canadians are considerably more inclined to select imported products compared to the global average of 56 percent choosing cheaper prices over buying local.
“This disconnect reflects the tension between Canadians’ desire to shop local and the reality of their purchasing decisions at checkout,” PwC Canada national retail and consumer leader Elisa Swern said in a press release. “Canadians value local products and want to support homegrown businesses, but price remains a powerful influence, especially in today’s economic climate.” Continue…
BC RCMP Find ‘Fully Functional’ Grenades in Handbag During Home Search

Police in northern B.C. say they had to evacuate an apartment complex after “fully functional” hand grenades were found while officers were executing a search warrant during a drug investigation.
Prince George RCMP said the incident happened while they conducted searches at multiple locations around the city on June 6 and June 7. The searches were an effort to make a “sizeable dent” in the illegal drug trade in the city, RCMP said in a June 24 release.
During a search of one of the residences, officers found a handbag that appeared to contain “several hand grenades,” the release said.
The RCMP’s explosives disposal unit from the Lower Mainland was contacted to dispose of the grenades, which were found to be “fully functional.” As a result, the apartment complex was evacuated in the middle of the night as a safety precaution.
“The evacuations were necessary to ensure residents’ safety and those effected were understanding and cooperative with law enforcement officers throughout the event,” said the release.
The investigation is ongoing.
During the searches, officers also located nearly 20 kilograms of various illegal drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA and ketamine. They also seized more than a dozen cases of contraband cigarettes and several high-powered firearms and handguns with ammunition, according to police.
“These findings represent a significant increase to the threat level we are encountering within the illicit drug trade in Prince George. As the hub city for Northern B.C., we are seeing an increase in the amount of drug trafficking through our community, both as a destination as well as a through point for other cities in the area,” Sgt. The federal border agency says three people have been found ineligible to remain in Canada in recent years for being senior officials of the Iranian regime.
The Canada Border Services Agency says deportation orders were issued for all three and one has been removed from Canada.
In 2022, Ottawa declared Iran’s leaders—including senior government and security agency officials—inadmissible to Canada due to involvement in terrorism and human rights violations.
The border agency says the designation, which was expanded last year, denies any senior official of the regime access to Canada in the first place.
It also allows the agency to take immigration enforcement action against any regime member who came to Canada before or after the designation.
The current hostilities between Israel and Iran have drawn more attention to the possible activities of Iranian regime members in Canada.

Oilsands production is projected to hit a record high this year, according to a new S&P forecast, with an anticipated 5 percent growth in northern Alberta’s production in 2025 compared to last year.
The oilsands have the potential to boost output by an additional half a million barrels per day from last year’s figures by 2030, despite global crude price uncertainties, according to the latest forecast released by S&P Global Commodity Insights.
Production is anticipated to reach 3.5 million barrels daily this year and surpass 3.9 million barrels per day within five years.
The new estimates amount to a 3 percent rise from S&P’s previous 10-year forecast for the industry and represent the fourth consecutive upward adjustment. Production is anticipated to level off later this decade, reaching approximately 3.7 million barrels per day by 2035, an increase of 100,000 barrels per day compared to S&P’s prior assessment.
S&P chief Canadian oil analyst Kevin Birn said the rise in production from the oilsands is not propelled by any new projects, but rather by minor expansions and upgrades to current operations.
“The increased trajectory for Canadian oilsands production growth amidst a period of oil price volatility reflects producers’ continued emphasis on optimization—and the favourable economics that underpin such operations,” Birn said in a June 24 press release. Continue…

International rotarians and local residents took part in the screening of the documentary “State Organs” in Calgary this week, with attendees and former MPs calling for action in stopping the state-sanctioned practice of forced organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience in China.
The movie screening was one of several events at the Rotary International convention, an annual gathering that draws thousands of participants from around the world focused on community and global initiatives. The documentary was screened in two sessions on June 23 at the city’s central library, and was presented by the End Forced Organ Harvesting Rotary Satellite Club, a volunteer group dedicated to raising awareness of the issue.
Amelia Stansell, vice chair of the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery, said after the viewing that she had heard about forced organ harvesting before, but that the documentary “really opened my eyes even more.”
“I was one of those that was teared up and had to share a Kleenex with everybody in our row–that was just a heartbreaking movie to watch,” she told NTD News, The Epoch Times’ sister media.
“This is not something [people] just see on TV, portrayed in some crime show, but [this] is really, really happening, and it’s really happening to real humans,” she said. Continue…

On the 75th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, one image of a lone Canadian soldier stands out
In the photograph, the young soldier looks past the camera lens. Blood stains his face from shrapnel wounds. Grenades hang from his belt, his rifle is beside him. He is leaning against sandbags, but appears somehow coiled for action, resting but not at ease, his expression enigmatic, as if he had just witnessed something barely believable for the first time.
His company had just made a fighting retreat, under mortar attack from Chinese forces, from a patrol near Hill 166 west of the Jamestown Line in Korea, near the present day border between North and South. Two Canadians were killed, and two dozen injured.
It was the early morning of June 23, 1952, and as he waited for medical aid at this field clinic, Pte. Heath Bowness Matthews originally of Alberton, P.E.I., a signaller with Charles Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, was becoming an iconic figure in Canadian history. Continue…

The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization that has declared “jihad against the Jews,” has established a vast network of charities and fundraising across Canada, a new think-tank report finds.
“For decades, organizations affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, of which Hamas is also an adherent, have managed to embed themselves at all levels of Canadian society,” the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP) argues.
Its latest report, “We Stand on Guard For Thee? The Growing Influence of the Muslim Brotherhood on Politics, Academia, and Civil Society in America,” was published Wednesday morning. The organization features Canada’s former justice minister Irwin Cotler on its board of directors.
The Muslim Brotherhood is an Egyptian organization that believes in the establishment of an Islamic caliphate whose leaders have promoted antisemitic conspiracies.
Hamas is a Palestinian offshoot of the Brotherhood.
“This report is a wake-up call for all Canadians,” ISGAP board advisor Charles Asher Small told National Post in a written statement.
