CFIA Detects First Cases of Dermo in PEI, Quebec Oysters

Canada’s food inspection agency has detected the first confirmed cases of the aquatic animal disease dermo in oyster samples collected in Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

Oyster samples taken in Egmont Bay, P.E.I., were found to have dermo, also known as perkinsosis, says a July 4 statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). This is the first confirmed case in the province.

“Dermo does not pose a risk to human health or food safety, but it can cause increased oyster mortality and decreased growth rates,” the federal agency said.

Dermo is a “serious” disease in both cultured and wild oysters that is caused by the parasite Perkinsus marinus. The disease usually infects oysters between the ages of 1 and 3, and can kill the oysters, with mortality rates typically varying from 50 percent to 70 percent, according to a CFIA fact sheet on dermo.

Additionally, the CFIA confirmed dermo and another aquatic animal disease, multinucleate sphere unknown (MSX), in oyster samples collected in Chaleur Bay, Quebec, which are the first confirmed cases in that province, according to a separate July 4 statement.

MSX causes “significant mortality” in both juvenile and adult oysters. Those over the age of 2 are more affected, while juvenile oysters can be infected with MSX spores. The disease is caused by the parasite Haplosporidium nelsoni, and mortality rates can reach from 90 percent to 95 percent, a CFIA fact sheet on MSX says. Continue…

Ottawa has not received any private sector proposals to build a new pipeline linking Alberta to British Columbia, says federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson.

Hodgson was in Calgary on July 4 announcing funding for five Alberta carbon capture projects when he was asked how receptive he would be if a proponent were to emerge in the coming weeks for a new crude pipeline from Alberta to northern B.C.

The minister responded that Ottawa has begun conversations with the private sector on projects that could get the green light under the One Canadian Economy Act, also known as Bill C-5, which was passed into law on June 26. The bill seeks to speed up approval for infrastructure projects that align with Canada’s national interest.

“We’re very early on in that process. If a project comes forward, and I’ve not seen one yet, but if a project comes forward, it will be evaluated against those five criteria,” Hodgson said, referring to the evaluation process used to determine what qualifies as national interest projects.

“One of the five key criteria is high probability of execution. That means private sector leadership and private sector capital,” the minister said, adding that the evaluation would be done alongside consultations with relevant jurisdictions and indigenous groups. He noted that discussions with the private sector have included these stakeholders.

The expectation for a pipeline proposal to emerge within weeks was first suggested by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in late June, when she said in an interview with Bloomberg published on June 24 that there had been ongoing discussions with major energy companies. Nearly one in five Albertans who visited an emergency room in the past year reports leaving before receiving care, a new report says.

“A significant 18 percent of those who attended an [emergency department] in the past year reported leaving before receiving care, a sign of both the severity of wait times and the frustration experienced by patients,” says a recent report released by the Alberta Medical Association (AMA).

AMA President Shelley Duggan finds this “concerning,” as it is “more than double the national average of 8.6 percent,” she said in a July 4 statement referencing data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

Additionally, another 18 percent of emergency department visitors reported being treated or kept overnight in a hallway or storage area, which the report says highlights the overcrowding issue in hospitals as well as the “strain on hospital resources.”

Moreover, the report indicates that timeliness of care is a key challenge in Alberta’s emergency departments, since 58 percent of visitors rated the timeliness of seeing a physician as “poor,” while 29 percent rated the timeliness as “very poor.”

However, in August 2022, something truly bizarre and unexpected happened.

An anonymous John Doe—literally styled by his lawyer as “John Doe”—filed an objection to TGP unsealing the sex client list … and the Court SIDED WITH THE JOHN DOE over the interests of the press and public to know what happened in one of the most remarkable court cases in US history.

What possible reason could John Doe have for not wanting the Epstein Sex Client List exposed?

We were very curious about Mr. John Doe. Who is this person and why is he the lone person fighting to keep the Epstein client list hidden from public view? What is his connection to Epstein? Why did the court side with this anonymous and powerful power player?

The statements indicated the villages of Piddubne in Donetsk and Sobolivka in Kharkiv are now under Russian control, though the Ukrainian side has not yet acknowledged this.

Piddubne had an estimated pre-war population of about 500 and is located merely 4 miles from the Dnipropetrovsk oblast border.

As for, Sobolivka, it lies about two miles west of Kupiansk and is outside of areas previously claimed by Russia, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Russia's Defense Ministry said in a couple of social media posts that its troops had “liberated” the settlements, and made reference to "Poddubnoye" and "Sobolevka" - according to the Russian spellings.

According to analysis presented in AFP, this marks the third straight month of Russian forces' advance in Ukraine's east, after stagnant front lined during the winter.

The South China Morning Post speculated that the real reason was that Xi didn’t want to be “perceived as a supporting actor” there given the state dinner that Lula will hold for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, who’ll be the first Indian premier to visit Brazil in nearly six decades.

Despite the border de-escalation deal that Xi and Modi agreed to during the last BRICS Summit, China and India still remain rivals, which recently manifested itself through reported Chinese support to Pakistan during the latest Indo-Pak Conflict and India’s perception that China is using the SCO against it. Accordingly, with Modi indisputably being the top VIP at the group’s latest annual gathering, it might therefore indeed be the case that Xi felt uncomfortable and thus declined to travel there to attend.

This hypothesis directly leads to the question of why Lula agreed to make Modi’s visit an official state one with an associated dinner despite him traveling there to attend a multilateral event. While it could just be for reasons of protocol considering the historical significance of his visit, Lula might have also calculated that it could expand Brazil’s balancing act from its hitherto mostly binary Sino-US nature into a more complex one through the inclusion of India. Russian fertilizer exports to BRICS nations have surged over 60% in the past three years and the country is ready to further expand production to meet growing demand across the bloc, Andrey Guryev, President of the Russian Association of Fertilizer Producers (RAFP), told the BRICS Business Forum in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

Until 2022, the European Union was Russia’s top fertilizer buyer, accounting for about 28% of its exports. But following the escalation in Ukraine and the resulting wave of EU and US sanctions, Russia has redirected much of its fertilizer trade toward BRICS and African nations.

”BRICS accounts for half of Russia’s fertilizer exports,” Guryev said. The largest share, nearly a quarter, goes to Brazil, he added.

”Environmentally friendly Russian mineral fertilizers give Brazilian farmers a key competitive advantage on the global market: the safety and quality of their agricultural products,” Guryev stressed. Continue…

Anti-tourism sentiment in Mallorca has escalated into acts of vandalism targeting properties associated with expats and tourists

Activists on the Spanish island of Mallorca have vandalised cars and businesses owned by German expatriates, Mallorca Zeitung has reported. The incidents come amid growing anger against mass tourism across Spain and a deepening housing crisis in the country that has seen rents and prices spiral.

Nearly 30 shops and numerous cars with foreign license plates were defaced on Saturday with stickers and slogans such as “Germans out” and “foreign buyers go to hell” in the Spanish town of Santanyi on Mallorca.

Police confirmed the incidents to the German Press Agency and said it had launched a probe to find the perpetrators.

Santanyi, a resort town of about 12,800 on Mallorca’s southeast coast, is a well-known hotspot for German expats, many of whom own homes or run businesses there. Continue…

US investment holding BlackRock stopped its search for investors to back a multi-billion dollar fund for rebuilding Ukraine earlier this year, Bloomberg has reported. Interest reportedly dropped after President Donald Trump retook the White House.

The fund was set to be unveiled at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome next week. It had been close to securing backing from firms supported by the governments of Germany, Italy, and Poland, the outlet wrote on Saturday, citing anonymous sources.

Nevertheless, BlackRock reportedly decided to shelve the talks early this year “due to a lack of interest amid increased uncertainty over Ukraine’s future,” after the US changed its stance towards Kiev under the current administration.

Trump has long promised to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict and has sought avenues to reach a peace deal. He has also pushed European NATO allies to take over the burden of militarily supporting Ukraine. Canada's military has suffered from peacetime budget woes under governments of various stripes since the Cold War ended

Not that long ago, former air force fighter pilot Stephen Fuhr was just one among many voices in Canada complaining about the way the federal government makes big defence purchasing decisions.

"Runaway Spending": Canada on Track for $92 Billion Deficit, Think Tank Projects

The federal government is on pace to post a $92-billion deficit this fiscal year — nearly double what was projected just four months ago, according to a new report from the C.D. Howe Institute. If accurate, it would mark the second-largest deficit in Canadian history, trailing only the $327.7-billion shortfall of 2020-21 during the pandemic, according to National Post.

“The picture is definitely not pretty,” said Alexandre Laurin, C.D. Howe’s vice-president, who co-authored the report with William Robson and Don Drummond.

The think tank now forecasts annual deficits of over $77 billion for the next four years, far higher than the government’s projections in its most recent budget — which is now more than a year old. The report criticizes the government’s delay in tabling a new budget, saying, “Delaying a budget until the fiscal year is more than half over is never good, but Canada’s current high-spending trajectory makes this delay especially bad.”

National Post writes C.D. Howe attributes the worsening outlook to rising defence spending, Trump-era tariffs, tax cuts, and the scrapped digital services tax. It also questions whether promised revenue boosts from fines, penalties, and savings will materialize.
