Leaders of Canada and the European Union said they have signed a defence security pact as Prime Minister Mark Carney was visiting Brussels. The deal will in part allow Canada to begin talks to join Europe’s rearmament plan.

“With this new security and defence partnership, which provides for this increased cooperation across the full spectrum of security, it will help us deliver on our new requirements for capabilities more rapidly and more effectively,” Carney said during a press conference on June 23. He was speaking alongside European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after holding talks during the day.

Von der Leyen said that with the signing of the agreement, talks will “swiftly” begin for Canada to enter and bolster the EU’s 150-billion euro ($240 billion) Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program contained within the ReArm Europe policy.

The new defence pact is strategic in nature, with no clear deliverables announced. A joint statement from Canada and the EU said it will serve as a “coherent, high-level political framework” for discussion around defence and security.

Carney said the “rules-based global order is under threat” and added that “we can nostalgically look back and long for the old order to somehow return, or we can build a new one with purpose and partnership.” Continue…

75% of Canadians Say Country is ‘Falling Behind’ Militarily Even As Feds Commit to Defence Spending Increase

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/75-of-canadians-say-country-is-falling-behind-militarily-even-as-feds-commit-to-defence-spending-increase-5877494?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

Three-quarters of Canadians say the country’s military is “falling behind” despite Ottawa’s recent commitment to meet NATO’s defence spending target of 2 percent of GDP by March 2026, a new survey suggests.

Seventy-five percent of the nearly 1,500 people polled by Angus Reid earlier this month said Canada is “being left in the dust” by the international community when it comes to military capabilities. It is a major spike since last year when 58 percent of Canadians had similar concerns.

This month’s survey found that only 14 percent of Canadians think the country’s military is “keeping up,” while 11 percent are uncertain.

Conservative voters are most likely to say the country’s military is lagging at 88 percent, closely followed by Bloc Québécois voters at 82 percent. Sixty-eight percent of Liberal voters held this opinion while 57 percent of NDP voters voiced concern.

The poll results come on the heels of Ottawa’s announcement that Canada had signed a defence security pact with the European Union. The agreement provides Canada with the opportunity to begin discussions on joining Europe’s rearmament plan, Prime Minister Mark Carney has said. Continue…

Carney Says Israel-Iran Ceasefire Should Lead to Gaza Truce

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/carney-says-israel-iran-ceasefire-should-lead-to-gaza-truce-5877488?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada welcomes the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, noting that it should lead to broader de-escalation in the region.

The ceasefire was first announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on June 23. The truce has been fragile, with Trump saying on the morning of June 24 he was trying to reign-in Israel.

The ceasefire announcement came after the U.S. bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. Iran retaliated on June 23 by firing missiles at the U.S. military base in Qatar. The attack was expected, missiles were intercepted, and no injuries were sustained, according to U.S. and Qatari officials.

“With the reported reduction in Iran’s nuclear capacity, we urge parties to adhere to the ceasefire, return to the table and negotiate a diplomatic resolution,” Carney wrote in a statement on June 24, as he attends the NATO Summit in the Netherlands.

“That resolution should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” the prime minister added. Israel has been conducting military operations in the Gaza Strip since terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023.

Canadian and American policy on Gaza is not entirely in-sync, with Canada being more critical toward Israel at times than the United States, but on Iran the countries have been more closely aligned. Continue…

Housing Construction Must Double in the Next Decade to Reclaim 2019 Affordability: CMHC

As many as 4.8 million new homes must be constructed over the next decade to return to affordability levels last seen in 2019 based on expected demand, Canada’s national housing agency says.

The latest supply gaps estimate report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) found the country will need between 430,000 and 480,000 new housing units each year across the ownership and rental markets until 2035.

CMHC deputy chief economist Aled ab Iorwerth described the gap as “challenging,” noting that it would represent roughly double the current pace of home construction in Canada, which has a projected rate of 245,000 to 250,000 units.

“Tackling this housing affordability challenge is enormous. It’s absolutely critical to increase housing supply,” he said during the Crown agency’s in-house podcast to announce the report. “It’s particularly large in some of our key cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.”

A total of 90,760 housing starts have been documented up to May this year, with the CMHC forecasting an annual average of 245,000 per year for the next decade based on current conditions.

Doubling the pace of housing construction is achievable, ab Iorwerth said, but not without “a significantly larger and modernized workforce, more private investment, less regulation, fewer delays, and lower development costs.” Continue…

China Behind Recent Cyberattacks on Canada’s Telecom Companies: Canadian Security Agency and FBI Investigation

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/china-behind-recent-cyberattacks-on-canadas-telecom-companies-canadian-security-agency-and-fbi-investigation-5877274?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

Chinese state-linked cyber threat actors were responsible for recent attacks on Canadian telecommunications companies, according to Canada’s cybersecurity agency and the U.S. intelligence and security service. The incidents are part of a global cyber espionage campaign aimed at gathering intelligence data.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and the FBI warned Canadians of the risks posed by state-sponsored cyber actors from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in a bulletin published on June 19, following compromises of Canadian entities earlier this year by a PRC-linked cyber threat actor known as Salt Typhoon.

The agency says three network devices registered to a Canadian telecommunications company were compromised in mid-February, with actors exploiting system vulnerabilities to retrieve configuration files from all three devices, while modifying at least one of the files to enable traffic collection from the network.

“The Cyber Centre is aware of malicious cyber activities currently targeting Canadian telecommunications companies,” reads the bulletin. “The responsible actors are almost certainly PRC state-sponsored actors, specifically Salt Typhoon.”

The agency did not specify which telecommunications companies were impacted.

The agency estimates that PRC cyber actors “will almost certainly continue to target Canadian organizations as part of this espionage campaign, including telecommunications service providers and their clients, over the next two years.” Continue…

Alberta NDP Leader Nenshi Wins Seat in Provincial Byelection; Separatist Republican Leader Comes in Third in Rural Riding

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi emerged victorious in one of three byelections in the province on June 23, securing a landslide win in Edmonton-Strathcona after a year of sitting on the sidelines.

Nenshi’s party colleague Gurtej Singh Brar won the Edmonton-Ellerslie race, while political newcomer Tara Sawyer successfully held onto the rural Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding for the UCPs in a race where the separatist Republican Party of Alberta took third place.

Results from Elections Alberta indicate Nenshi garnered 7,952 votes to win the seat previously held by his predecessor, former Alberta NDP leader and premier Rachel Notley. The riding has been an NDP stronghold since 1986.

The United Conservative Party’s Darby Crouch took second place with 1,314 votes, while the third place Liberal candidate Don Slater won 195 and Republican Party of Alberta hopeful Ravina Chand had 65.

Nenshi told supporters in a speech at an Edmonton hotel that voters had sent a “clear message” to the UCP by handing him more than 80 percent of the vote, saying his supporters want to see change in the province.

“Life in Alberta shouldn’t feel like a monthly test of survival,” Nenshi told supporters gathered at the hotel for a victory party. “You shouldn’t have to hold your breath every time you open your utility bill or worry if this is the month your rent or mortgage finally becomes unaffordable. You shouldn’t be choosing between groceries and gas.” Continue…

Just how far behind the world Canada has been allowed to lag on LNG

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/just-how-far-behind-the-world-canada-has-been-allowed-to-lag-on-lng

Early on Sunday morning, word leaked out from the Pacific Coast port of Kitimat, B.C. that Canada had produced its first-ever liquid natural gas for export.

Unnamed sources told Reuters that at 4 a.m. local time, the $40-billion LNG Canada terminal was first able to turn Canadian natural gas into a super-chilled liquid destined for Asian buyers. It’s set to be loaded into the LNG tanker Gaslog Glasgow, a ship that as of press time was just entering Canadian territorial waters.

Although the milestone is being feted as the beginning of a new multi-billion-dollar Canadian resource sector, it also neatly illustrates how far behind Canada has been allowed to lag in an industry where it could feasibly have been a dominant power.

In all the world’s other major producers of natural gas, this moment came years if not decades ago. The United States exported its first LNG in 2016, Qatar dispatched its first LNG vessels in 1997 and Australia was pioneering LNG export technology as early as 1989.

All three are now raking in hundreds of billions in annual LNG money that could have been Canada’s if it been able to reach the starting line earlier than Sunday morning.

In Australia, the LNG export sector is now bringing in the Canadian equivalent of $220 million per day. According to the most recent figures from Australian Energy Producers, annual LNG export earnings were now worth $81.5 billion CDN.

This kind of money added to the Canadian economy would represent a three per cent rise in overall GDP. Put another way, it would be akin to adding a Manitoba’s worth of extra GDP to the economy (Manitoba’s GDP was $91.9 billion in 2023). Continue…
