Investigative genetic genealogy (IGG) is a method police forces use that involves collecting DNA from a crime scene and then using it to track down family members with the DNA, until they are able to narrow it down to the suspect. It’s a practice that is sometimes used when there are no DNA matches in the national DNA bank.

One practice includes using private sector DNA banks such as ancestry research organizations, some of which provide access to police without a warrant or subpoena.

Another practice, called the DNA surveillance tactic, is a way police gather DNA information from unsuspecting individuals by sampling drinking cups or chewing gum that have been discarded.

However, Kosseim said that provincial regulations and policies are needed to ensure the DNA information of innocent individuals is not misused and that there is a consistency of practice for IGG use in police investigations.

“It is important that when novel techniques are integrated into policing practice that the privacy and human rights implications are well understood and that the appropriate risk mitigations be identified and implemented up front,” she wrote in a 24-page report titled “Guardrails for Police Use of Investigative Genetic Genealogy in Ontario” released on June 24. Ottawa Orders Chinese Company Hikvision to Cease Canadian Operations

A minister said security and intelligence officials found that allowing the company to stay in Canada would injure the country’s national security.

The Canadian government has ordered Chinese surveillance camera maker Hikvision to stop operating in Canada, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said on June 27.

In a statement, Joly said the government ordered Hikvision Canada Inc. to “cease all operations in Canada and close its Canadian business” after conducting a national security review under the Investment Canada Act.

“The government has determined that Hikvision Canada Inc.’s continued operations in Canada would be injurious to Canada’s national security. This determination is the result of a multi- step review that assessed information and evidence provided by Canada’s security and intelligence community,” the minister said.

Joly said government departments, agencies, and crown corporations will be banned from procuring new Hikvision products, and a review will be launched to ensure legacy equipment from the Chinese manufacturer is no longer used.

She also said that while the order doesn’t extend to the company’s affiliate operations outside of Canada, she “strongly encourage[s] all Canadians to take note of this decision and make their own decisions accordingly.”

Canada may be famous for its maple syrup, love of hockey, and the CN Tower, but its most recognized symbol continues to be the maple leaf.

The maple leaf became the official symbol of Canada in 1965 when the iconic red and white flag was raised for the first time, but it served as the unofficial symbol of the Great White North for more than a century prior to that event.

The flag’s design—the maple leaf set against a white background bordered by two red edges—received unanimous approval from a parliamentary committee in 1964, according to a Canadian Senate history of the flag.

Actor urges people to educate themselves about the problems facing the planet

Captain James T. Kirk would be appalled at the rapid acceleration of climate change on Earth, says William Shatner, the Montreal-born actor who played the head of the USS Enterprise in the “Star Trek” franchise for decades.

“I think he would probably be as appalled as I am,” Shatner said during a recent video call from his home in Los Angeles.

The actor said he could imagine Kirk “skywriting” a message to his fellow Earthlings, urging them to take action.

“Education, education, read everything,” Shatner said. “Everybody should acquaint themselves with the problem, and make a decision.”

Protesters allegedly shout 'Hamas is coming' outside Noa Argamani speaking event in Windsor, Ont.

A Hamas captivity survivor on a speaking tour in Canada this month said she won’t “let terror sympathizers control the narrative” after anti-Israel demonstrators allegedly blocked the exit of her venue last week.

Noa Argamani, 27, was in Windsor, Ont., as part of a Jewish National Fund (JNF) fundraising event at the University of Windsor, which reportedly attracted members of the school’s Palestinian Solidarity Group.

On Saturday, Argamani shared an X post from FactsMatter describing the activists surrounding the building, “blocking the only entrance and shouting at the Jewish attendees. In a brief video clip attached, a voice is heard shouting, “Hamas is coming.”
