A family member of mine is a nurse in Canada. They performed several assisted dying procedures at the care home they worked at, before refusing to continue.

https://breaking-news.ca/a-family-member-of-mine-is-a-nurse-in-canada-they-performed-several-assisted-dying-procedures-at-the-care-home-they-worked-at-before-refusing-to-continue/

In one case, the family of a mentally disabled man decided they wanted him to be euthanised.

He didn’t want to die.

But my family member was legally forced to end his life.

They held his hand while he told them “I’m hungry” and “I’m thirsty”.

That poor man didn’t understand what was happening to him as he was pumped full of medication that would end his life, and my family member wept for the soul that was being lost unnecessarily.

He wasn’t terminally ill.

He wasn’t particularly old.

He wasn’t dying.

He didn’t want to die.

But he didn’t have a choice.

Because his life was deemed dispensable by his family, and the Government gave them the power to end his life regardless of his needs or wishes.

And when my family member told their workplace that they couldn’t continue performing these procedures — that their conscience wouldn’t allow it — they were told that it was their “legal duty” as a nurse.

They still refused.

But not everyone will have the moral fibre or bravery of my family member.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this is exactly what the Assisted Dying Bill opens the door to.

It starts with “choice” and “dignity”.

But suicide isn’t only done “when the patient wants it”. And the countries where it is already legalised have shown us the grim reality.

In the Netherlands, 40% of euthanasia deaths occur without patient consent. In Canada, it has been offered to Paralympians who only asked for a mobility aid.

If it can happen there; it will happen here.

People 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 be killed against their will.

Jailed Coutts Protester Receives Bail Pending Appeal of Mischief, Weapons Charges

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/jailed-coutts-covid-protester-receives-bail-pending-appeal-of-mischief-weapons-charges-5881436?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

One of the two men convicted last year for mischief and weapon possession during the Coutts, Alta., border blockade has been granted bail as he appeals his conviction and six-and-a-half year sentence.

Alberta appeal court Justice Jo’Anne Strekaf granted Chris Carbert’s release in a June 30 ruling. She noted that “despite the serious nature of the offences at issue” Carbert had established his detention was “not necessary in the public interest.”

A jury found Carbert and Anthony Olienick guilty of mischief over $5,000 and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace last fall during the 2022 blockade at the Coutts border crossing in opposition to COVID-19 rules and vaccine mandates. They were found not guilty on charges of conspiring to kill RCMP officers, but Olienick was convicted of possessing a pipe bomb.

Both men were handed six-and-a-half year sentences last September but received roughly four years’ credit for the time they had served in jail since their arrest.

Appeals were subsequently launched by both men, but only Carbert has been granted bail thus far.

Strekaf ruled that the grounds of Carbert’s appeal were “not frivolous” and that he did not pose a flight risk or a danger to the public. Continue…

State of Local Emergency, Evacuation Orders Near Lytton, BC, Due to Wildfires

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/state-of-local-emergency-evacuation-orders-near-lytton-bc-due-to-wildfires-5881621?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

A southern district in B.C. has declared a state of local emergency and issued evacuation orders due to rapidly spreading wildfires near Lytton, a village devastated by a similar blaze in 2021.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued evacuation orders in the Blue Sky Country region because of the “immediate danger to life safety” caused by two wildfires near the small community, located roughly 250 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

An evacuation order is in effect for three properties along Highway 12 in the region due to the “out of control” Izman Creek wildfire. The order came into effect at 8 p.m. on July 1, and says anyone in the affected area must leave immediately.

An evacuation alert was issued on July 1 at 8 p.m. for nine properties along Highway 12. The alert advises residents to be prepared to evacuate as necessary.

“Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an Evacuation Order; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions,” the evacuation alert reads.

Highway 12 was closed in both directions between Lytton and Lillooet as of July 2 around 7:30 a.m. due to the wildfire, a DriveBC map indicated. Only local traffic is allowed. Continue…

Alberta Creates Action Team to Address Aggression, Complexity in Classrooms

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/alberta-creates-action-team-to-address-aggression-complexity-in-classrooms-5881508?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

Alberta is launching an action team this summer to address increasing aggression and complex needs in classrooms, the province’s education minister has announced.

The Aggression and Complexity in Schools Action Team will be composed of teachers and education partners who will provide Alberta with recommendations on short- and long-term actions to support both students and educators, the government says.

“We have heard loud and clear from teachers and parents that we need to do something about aggression in classrooms, and that is exactly what we are doing,” Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said in a June 30 statement. “Every student and staff member deserves to feel safe, supported and respected at school, and the action team will help reach that goal.”

The government said Alberta’s classrooms have become “increasingly complex” due to a rise in aggression, coupled with heightened behavioural challenges and the special learning needs of students, which affects both students and staff.

“This new action team is part of a broader strategy to reduce disruption in the classroom, strengthen mental health and behavioural supports, and ensure that our schools remain inclusive and safe learning spaces,” said Nicolaides, speaking at a June 30 press conference.

The action team will be composed of 20 education system leaders, including representatives from school boards in Edmonton and Calgary, and the Alberta Teachers’ Association. Nicolaides said the team will work together with teachers, education support workers, school resource officers, and representatives from student and family advocacy groups. Continue…

CCP Leaders Propose Regulations to Rein In Xi’s Superagencies

https://www.theepochtimes.com/china/ccp-leaders-propose-regulations-to-rein-in-xis-superagencies-5881126?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

During Xi’s decade-plus tenure, he centralized decision-making power through various CCP groups. Now, the Politburo is reviewing measures to regulate them.

China’s top leaders are proposing new rules to regulate a set of powerful commissions and groups established nearly a decade ago by communist Party chief Xi Jinping to centralize his power.

The proposed regulation was reviewed on June 30 during a closed-door meeting of the Politburo, the Party’s second-highest decision-making body, Chinese state media reported.

Details of the new measures are scarce. A summary of the meeting published by state mouthpiece Xinhua News Agency stated that the aim is to regulate these commissions’ “establishment, responsibilities, and operations.”

The changes target agencies called “decision-making, deliberative and coordinating institutions,” the report read, referring to more than a dozen Party groups that steer policies across various sectors, including financial services, foreign affairs, technological development, and education.

Many of these Party committees were established or gained more power in 2018 when Xi introduced a series of directives aimed at consolidating the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) dominance over state agencies in decision-making. Continue…

Saskatchewan Joins Alberta’s Legal Challenge Over Ottawa’s Impact Assessment Act

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/saskatchewan-joins-albertas-legal-challenge-over-ottawas-impact-assessment-act-5881562?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

Saskatchewan is backing Alberta as the two western provinces seek to oppose the federal Impact Assessment Act in court.

The province says it is “intervening” to support Alberta’s legal action aimed at challenging the act that governs approval of major initiatives such as energy projects, power plants, and mines.

Justice Minister Tim McLeod said Saskatchewan’s decision to join Alberta in its lawsuit is about protecting the province from federal “overreach.”

The act’s reform was included in a list of 10 policy changes proposed by Premier Scott Moe in his Strong Saskatchewan, Strong Canada plan, which he submitted to Prime Minister Mark Carney in mid-May, McLeod noted in a June 30 press release.

He said the current Impact Assessment Act is a major roadblock in achieving those policy changes.

“We remain committed to standing up for resource development across Canada, particularly in resource-rich western provinces like Saskatchewan and Alberta,” McLeod said. Continue…

Alberta’s New Referendum Rules Launch July 4 as Anti-Separatists Seek to Counter Independence Push

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/albertas-new-referendum-rules-launch-july-4-as-anti-separatists-seek-to-counter-independence-push-5881524?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_cnt=b

Alberta’s new lower bar for referendums is set to go into effect July 4 as anti-separatist petitioners led by former Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk seek to beat the separatist movement to a referendum question.

The changes making it easier for Albertans to hold a referendum were introduced April 29 by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. Though it came one day after the April 28 election that saw the federal Liberals re-elected, Smith said the changes would have been put forward regardless.

The legislation extends the signature collection period from 90 to 120 days and sets the threshold for triggering a referendum at 10 percent of eligible voters who participated in the most recent general election. A May poll from Leger found that 42 percent of Albertans support the new lower threshold to hold referendums, while 41 percent disagree.

The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) separatist group plans to file its petition as soon as the new rules go into effect. The APP will have 120 days after filing the petition to collect 177,000 signatures to put forward a request for Alberta’s separation from Canada.

Lukaszuk, meanwhile, has a competing petition to support Alberta remaining a part of Canada.

Lukaszuk is a former Progressive Conservative MLA and deputy premier under former Premier Alison Redford, but he endorsed the New Democrats in Alberta’s last provincial election. Continue…

One passenger drafted a farewell note to her husband during the descent, while another scribbled a will

A Japan Airlines flight from Shanghai to Tokyo made an emergency landing this week after plummeting almost 8 kilometres in less than 10 minutes. Once the plane was safely on the ground, passengers were given 15,000 yen (Cdn $142) in compensation, plus a free night’s accommodation, according to reports.

According to People magazine, Monday’s flight JL8696 was operated by Spring Japan, a low-cost subsidiary of Japan Airlines, and was scheduled to fly from Shanghai to Tokyo, a two and a half hour journey.

However, about an hour into the flight the plane descended rapidly from a cruising altitude of about 11,700 metres down to just 3,000 metres while reducing its speed from 880 kph to 560 kph. It then levelled out at the new altitude and, about 45 minutes later, made an emergency landing in Osaka, Japan. Continue…
