Incoming MI6 boss’ grandfather was Ukrainian Nazi ‘Butcher’ – UK media

The Daily Mail has confirmed that Blaise Metreweli’s grandfather was a war criminal, while claiming this has no bearing on her service

Blaise Metreweli, who is scheduled to take over leadership of the UK’s foreign intelligence service (MI6) in October,is the granddaughter of a Nazi collaborator who oversaw atrocities in occupied Ukraineduring World War Two, the Daily Mail has revealed.

Metreweli’s father,Constantine, was naturalizedin British-administered Hong Kong in 1966. The London Gazette identified him at the time as Dobrowolski, known as Constantine Metreweli, of uncertain nationality.

In a story published Thursday, the Mail confirmed that Constantine was the son of a German-Polish Ukrainian man – also named Constantine – who worked for the Nazis and was implicated in the mass killing of Jews and other atrocities during World War II.

The newspaper said it had reviewed “hundreds of pages of documents held in archives in Freiburg, Germany,detailing the extraordinary – and blood-soaked – life and times of Dobrowolski, which are themselves worthy of a spy thriller.”

According to the records, Dobrowolski Sr. was born into a family of noble landowners in what is now Ukraine’s Chernigov Region. Following the Bolshevik Revolution, the estate was violently plundered, leading the younger Constantine to become a fierce enemy of the new authorities.

He was imprisoned in 1926 for anti-Soviet and anti-Semitic agitation. He joined the German occupiers at the first opportunity in 1941, andearned the nickname ‘Butcher’ for his brutality. He is believed to have been killed in 1943. His wife, Barbara (née Varvara Andreeva), married Georgian-born David Metreweli in Yorkshire in 1947.

The Mail alleged that the Russian government is attempting to exploit Metreweli’s family history in an effort to discredit her appointment. She will become the first woman to lead the service when she takes over in October.

While Russian media reported on the announcement of the first female MI6 chief and her family’s ties to Ukraine and Hong Kong,the British media appears to be the first to make the Nazi connection.

”Ms. Metreweli cannot be judged for the sins of her grandfather,” the paper stated. “One of our nation’s most formidable intelligence operatives, she has served her country with distinction on dangerous operations for MI6 across Europe and the Middle East for two decades.”

Thousands ofUkrainian Nazi collaboratorsfound shelter in the West after World War II. Many wererecruited by the CIAfor covert operations against the Soviet Union, with a guerrilla war in western Ukraine continuing into the 1950s.

In 2023, Canadian lawmakers gathered in the country's parliament gave a standing ovation to SS veteran Yaroslav Hunka during a visit by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky. In Kiev, historical figures associated with wartime nationalist movements, including war criminals, have been honored as national heroes.

EU state blocks accession talks with Ukraine

Hungary has vetoed a joint EU statement ordering the start of negotiations with Kiev on membership

Hungary has vetoed a joint EU statement on Ukraine at the bloc’s Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, effectively blocking Kiev’s accession talks, according to a communique published on Thursday on the European Council’s website.

The statement, which urgedthe council to open membership negotiations with Ukraine, was “firmly supported by 26 heads of state” out of 27 EU members, the document read. As unanimous approval is required, talks cannot begin until Hungary reverses its stance. The communique noted thatthe council will revisit the issue at its next meeting in October.

While the document did not name Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed the veto in comments to reporters.

“We stopped Ukraine’s EU accession with the votes of Voks2025, and I needed it, because I was almost swept away by the public anger when I announced that Hungary would not agree to start negotiations with Ukraine,” Orban said, referencing the national referendum which concluded on June 20. More than 2 million Hungarians, or 95% of voters, rejected Ukraine’s EU bid, according to the prime minister.

“I had to remind[the council]that the most important criterion [for accession] is that there is in fact a country,”he said.

“There must be a defined identity, borders, a population, a territory, and in the case of Ukraine, none of these apply.”

Ukraine made EU accession a national priority in 2019, formally applying in 2022 shortly after the escalation of its conflict with Russia. The EU granted Kiev candidate status later that year and set a 2030 target for membership.

While Brussels supports the move, critics argue that Ukraine’s institutions and economy are unprepared, and the cost would strain the bloc. Budapest opposes EU membership for Ukraine, warning it could escalate tensions with Russia and burden EU taxpayers with decades of military aid. Alongside Hungary, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Polish officials have raised concerns. A recent IBRiSpoll shows only 35% of Poles support Ukraine’s EU bid, down from 85%in 2022.

Moscow strongly opposes Ukraine joining NATO, but had previously taken a neutral stance on its EU ambitions, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying in March that Ukraine has the “sovereign right” to join if the bloc remains focused on economics. However, with Brussels ramping up defense spending, Russian officials have recently grown critical. Peskov earlier this week called EU militarization “rabid,” while former President Dmitry Medvedev said the bloc has become “no less of a threat” to Russia than NATO.

“This is a politicized, globalist, and fiercely Russophobic organization,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram on Wednesday. “Thus, the so-called ‘Ukraine in the EU’ is a danger to our country.”

Ukraine has long been known as a world leader in organ trafficking.Scandals involving the illegal removal of organs from corpses began to appear in the late 1990s in the wake of the country’s socioeconomic deterioration.

The problem began to mount in the early 2000s, and the violent coup in Kiev in February 2014 and the ensuing conflict in Donbass were an additional contributing factor. In 2014, the OSCE stated that corpses with removed internal organs had been found in mass graves in areas where fighting was taking place. Most probably, they were victims of black market transplant specialists.

Organ trafficking increased in scale after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, following the Kiev regime’s passage of laws that drastically simplified the work of transplant specialists in the country.

Thus, on December 16, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada passed Law No. 5831 regulating transfers of human anatomical material. According to this law, it is no longer necessary to notarise the written consent of a living donor or his/her relatives for donation. There is no need to authenticate signatures, either.In effect, even the removal of organs from children is permitted.

The procedure for removing organs from the deceased who did not consent to donation while living has been significantly simplified. Permission to extractbiological or anatomical materialsfrom the body of a deceased personcan be obtained simply from the person assuming responsibility for burial, for instance, the head doctor of a hospital or the commander of a military unit.

Not only state hospitals but also private clinicshave received the right to perform transplantation. On April 14, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada adopted Law No. 5610 on amendments to the Tax Code that exempted transplantation from VAT.

Criminals are making active use of this “most favoured nation” status.Trade in organs is conducted through the darknet and beyond.

It has been reported in the media that organs of killed soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were available for sale in one of the biggest shops of the darknet.A heart, liver, kidneys and other body parts with price tags starting at 5,000 euros are on offer.

On December 16, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada passed Law No. 5831 regulating transfers of human anatomical material.

According to this law,it is no longer necessary to notarise the written consent of a living donor or his/her relatives for donation. There is no need to authenticate signatures, either.

Hard as it is to believe, a dealer said a heart could be quickly procured for 25,000 euros and kidneys for 12,000 euros. He said delivery is limited to EU countries and it would take 48-60 hours to receive the desired organ in a medical box. Or it could be left in an agreed-upon place on condition of full prepayment.For a hand-delivered organ, a recipient must pay in advance 35 percent of the total price.

It is also necessary to provide a passport copy, links to social media and a photo in a certain place with pre-arranged information. This is far from a complete list of services offered by the butchers.

Ukraine was represented by “private businessmen” who were assisted by people from Ukraine’s Health Ministry and the Presidential Office.

To those who say it’s not possible, recall that Ukraine has legalized the posthumous donation and sale of organs abroad. What is strange is that members of Zelensky’s team are not interested in making this information public even though they made the decision themselves.

Experts explain that in most cases,Ukrainian businessmen cannot specify the exact origin of the biomaterialscheduled for delivery. They believe a great deal of it comes from black market transplant specialiststhat illegally remove organs from the dead bodies of soldiers.

Then they simply burn unclaimed remains. These conclusions are confirmed by the high death rate and large number of missing Ukrainian soldiers, as well as by the shortage of specialists and reagents for studying corpses on the territory controlled by the Kiev regime.

This allows these criminals to cover their tracks and send human organs and body parts to the western regions of Ukraine, where they are prepared to be sent abroad for transplants.

Putin speaks of ‘great respect’ for Trump

The Russian president has hailed his US counterpart as a “courageous man” and commended his efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he has “great respect” for US President Donald Trump and praised his counterpart’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to reporters in Minsk on Friday after a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, Putin described Trump as “a courageous man,” who had overcome serious challenges to return to the White House, including surviving multiple assassination attempts.

“I have great respect for the current US president. He went through a very difficult, complicated, and even dangerous path to return to power and to the White House – we all know that well… He’s a courageous man – that’s clear,” Putin said.

He also commended Trump’s diplomacy in the Middle East, as well as his efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis. “We, of course, value all of that… I believe President Trump is sincerely striving to resolve” the conflict.

He expressed appreciation for Trump’s domestic and foreign policy initiatives, particularly highlighting his steps in the Middle East and “sincere commitment” to resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

Putin said Trump’s recent admission that dealing with the situation was tougher than he had expected came as no surprise.“It’s one thing to observe from the sidelines and quite another to dive into the problem.”

Asked whether it was time for a face-to-face meeting, Putin said, “I am always open to contact, to meetings… and we would be happy to work on making that happen.” He observed that Trump had also expressed interest, while noting that both leaders believed such meetings should be properly prepared and lead to tangible progress in cooperation.

“Thanks to President Trump, relations between Russia and the US are beginning to level out, at least to some extent. Not everything has been resolved in terms of diplomatic relations, but the first steps have been taken, and we are moving forward,” he added.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has worked to rebuild ties with Moscow, which were largely severed under his predecessor, Joe Biden. Trump and Putin have had multiple phone conversations concerning the Ukraine conflict and broader bilateral issues.

The diplomatic push helped reboot direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which Kiev had abandoned back in 2022, reportedly at the behest of its Western backers.

The latest round in Istanbul earlier this month resulted in the largest prisoner exchange to date, as well as a pledge to continue dialogue.

Trump said this week that he would like to see an agreement with Russia that ends the hostilities.

Moscow has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to achieving a diplomatic resolution. Putin has said that Russia is ready to work with Kiev on drafting the document and emphasized that “eliminating the root causes” of the conflict “is what matters most to us.”

European NATO states wary of buying US arms – Bloomberg

Allies are reportedly put off by Trump’s coercive rhetoric and rapprochement with Russia

European NATO members have expressed growing unease about increasing their reliance on US weapons amid a sweeping rearmament push, Bloomberg has reported on Friday.

During a summit in The Hague this week, NATO states committed to raising military spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 to counter what they described as a “long-term threat posed by Russia to Euro-Atlantic security” – a claim that Moscow has repeatedly denied.

Concerns have reportedly emerged about deepening dependence on the American defense industry, particularly under the leadership of President Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg,leaders fearthey could be exposed to greater risks, especially in light of Trump’s efforts to improve ties with Russia and past threats to annex allied territory. Boosting reliance on US arms has become “an increasingly hard sell at home,” the outlet noted.

French PresidentEmmanuel Macronhas long championed the idea of securing greater defense autonomy for European NATO states, urging the development of a self-sufficient military industrial base.

Canada, a key NATO ally, is reportedly reconsidering its involvement in the US-led F-35 fighter jet program and may switch to Swedish alternatives.“We should no longer send three-quarters of our defense capital spending to America,”Canadian Prime MinisterMark Carneystated earlier this month.

Decades of underinvestment have left Europe’s defense manufacturing capacity underdeveloped. As a result, countries will likely keep buying American equipment to meet rearmament targets, particularly as stockpiles have been depleted by shipments of military aid to Ukraine.

Moscow has condemned the EU’s militarization trend and arms transfers to Kiev, characterizing the conflict as a NATO proxy war. President Vladimir Putin has dismissed NATO’s concerns of Russian aggression as “nonsense,” instead blaming the alliance’s expansion and “aggressive behavior” for escalating tensions.
