Around a hundred private jets carrying celebrities have descended on Italy to deliver eco-hypocrites including Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates to the wedding of tech billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.

Bezos is holding a three day event, yes three days, in Venice at a cost of somewhere in the region of $50-100 million.

While the exact same people lecture you about taking the occasional economy flight for a family getaway, they’re literally chartering their own carbon spewing flights just for themselves to attend a piss up.

On average, private jets emit about 2 to 3 metric tons of CO2 per flight hour.

A typical short flight, around 500 mile for example, emits somewhere in the region of 5-10 tons of CO2, while a long-haul flight of 3,000 miles could emit 20-30 tons. This is significantly higher per person than commercial flights, often 10-20 times more, as private jets carry fewer passengers.

12,000 German companies went bust in six months – economic tracker

Corporate insolvencies have hit their highest level in a decade, a new study indicates

Germany endured the highest wave of corporate bankruptcies in a decade in the first half of this year, a study by economic tracking agency Creditreform has suggested.

The first six months of this year saw some 11,900 German companies go bust, the study released on Thursday indicates. The figure represented a 9.4% increase over the same period last year, according to the agency. Some 141,000 employees worked at the companies affected.

“Despite some signs of hope, Germany remains mired in a deep economic and structural crisis. Companies are struggling with weak demand, rising costs, and persistent uncertainty,” Creditreform chief economist Patrik-Ludwig Hantzsch said.

The situation is expected to remain difficult as Germany continues to struggle with a recession that has dragged on for two years already. The wave of bankruptcies might ultimately increase in the next six months, given that the “persistently high level of insolvencies is increasingly triggering chain reactions,” Hantzsch warned.

While German GDP grew by a slight 0.2% in the first quarter of 2025, weak global demand and uncertainty in trade policies continue to take a toll on its economy. According to a new survey conducted by the Ifo economic institute released this week, expectations have worsened among German exporters this month over uncertainty regarding a potential trade war with Washington. The US was Germany’s top trading partner in 2024, with bilateral trade in goods totaling €253 billion (around $280 billion), according to official data.

Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump imposed 20% tariffs on all EU goods, with 25% on steel, aluminum, and cars. When Brussels signaled its readiness to retaliate, most of the levies were put on hold for 90 days to allow for negotiations. A 10% base tariff and the 25% targeted duties remained unchanged.

“The tariff threats from the US are still on the table. An agreement between the EU and the US has yet to be reached,” Klaus Wohlrabe, head of Ifo surveys, said, adding that the uncertainty has lowered exporters’ expectations, with the respective index falling to -7.4 points in June from -5.0 in May. The index measures how optimistic or pessimistic German manufacturing companies are about their prospects for selling abroad over the next three months.

British authorities seized 2.4 metric tons of cocaine in a ship arriving in England from Panama, authorities said Saturday, calling it one of the U.K.’s biggest drug busts in years.

The drugs, valued at 96 million pounds ($132 million), were found under containers on a vessel at London Gateway port, east of the British capital. The shipment was discovered after what officials said was an intelligence-led operation.

Britain’s interior ministry, the Home Office, said it was the sixth-largest cocaine seizure on record.

U.K. Border Force Maritime director Charlie Eastaugh said the seizure was “just one example of how dedicated Border Force maritime officers remain one step ahead of the criminal gangs who threaten our security.

Weight loss drugs tied to deaths and pancreatitis in UK while regulators delay action and launch gene study

The medicines regulator is investigating after hundreds of people have reported problems with their pancreas linked to taking weight loss and diabetes jabs.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Genomics England have launched the Yellow Card Biobank project to examine whether cases of pancreatitis linked to GLP-1 drugs may be influenced by people’s genetic makeup.

New MHRA data shows that since the drugs were licensed, there have been hundreds of cases of acute and chronic pancreatitis among people taking GLP-1 medicines.

Jewish rioters attack IDF soldiers in West Bank, at least six arrested

The source said that IDF soldiers were beaten and even choked by the rioters, with several soldiers and an officer lightly wounded by the end of the incident.

Six Jewish rioters were arrested after attacking IDF soldiers at Kafr Malik near Ramallah between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The Israeli civilians drove toward a closed military zone, and soldiers were sent to disperse the gathering, the military said.

A source cited by KAN said that IDF soldiers were beaten and even choked by the rioters, with several soldiers and an officer lightly wounded by the end of the incident.

The soldiers who were attacked were reservists in their third round of reserve duty, the military said.

The rioters were reportedly masked and threw stones at the soldiers. Border Police was also called to the scene, with one officer nearly being run over, KAN reported. Police fired warning shots to disperse the rioters. The rioters had also verbally assaulted Israeli forces, the IDF said, as well as vandalizing and damaging the vehicles of the security forces.

They also attempted to set fire to a structure used by police and spray-painted the word “Revenge” in Hebrew on it, Army Radio reported.

“Under the cover of Shabbat, the IDF is blatantly lying and slandering the settlers,” one of their representatives said, according to Maariv. “This was an event involving a battalion commander who lost control and fired live ammunition during the evacuation of an outpost on Friday night without any justification. The events are documented and are 180 degrees different from how they were reported.”

Not the first clashes against Jewish West Bank residents outside Ramallah

The incident that started on Friday night occurred days after a separate incident on Wednesday, also outside Ramallah, in which three Palestinians were killed, several others were wounded, and an IDF soldier was lightly wounded in clashes with Jewish West Bank residents.

Approximately 30 Jews entered the village of Maghayer Al-Dir and set fire to Palestinian-owned buildings and vehicles. Vandalism was also reportedly committed, with spray-painted graffiti on walls in the area.

Five Israelis were arrested during the incident and transferred to Israel Police custody, but were released the next day.

Wednesday’s incident saw an exchange of stone throwing between Jewish rioters and Palestinians in the village. The three Palestinians were killed by Border Police intervening who fired on the Arab residents, Palestinian state-run WAFA reported, adding that seven others were wounded.

The US government taxes younger workers trying to start families, and gives their money to wealthier retirees.

The welfare state is supposed to redistribute funds from times of plenty to times of need, as well as from rich to poor. That is why the nation’s most generous publicly financed benefits are reserved for seniors, who have less capacity to earn money and who face higher health-care costs, while taxes are concentrated on working-age households.

But working-age Americans, despite typically earning more income than seniors, also bear substantial child-rearing costs, have rarely paid off their mortgages, and must spend more to live near good jobs and schools. As a result, this group now has lower material standards of living than retirees: they have less living space, are more likely to go without meals or health care, are less able to pay utility bills, are more likely to live in pest-infested houses, and are more likely to live where they feel threatened by crime. This also means that families have less money to invest in their children.

The U.S.’s increasingly costly entitlements for middle-class retirees result in substantial redistribution away from young workers. If this system is not reformed soon, major tax increases on workers at all income levels will be required, which will only exacerbate redistribution away from age groups who are worst off.

Why Redistribute to the Elderly?

Economist Nicholas Barr has argued that the welfare state serves two main functions: First, as a “Robin Hood”, redistributing from the rich to the poor; second as a “piggy bank,” redistributing income from times of plenty to times of need over the life cycle.[1] The second function is necessary, Barr argues, because “even if all poverty and social exclusion could be eliminated, so that the entire population were middle class, there would still be a need for institutions to enable people to insure themselves and to redistribute over the life cycle.” He acknowledges that while “private institutions are often effective” at fulfilling this purpose, they “face predictable problems, which require government intervention.”[2] The most predictable and long-lasting of these problems is old age.

Israel Suffered Extensive Damage

Despite the arduous efforts of Israeli censors to hide the devastation Iran inflicted on Israel with its barrage of ballistic missiles during the 12-Day War, information is emerging that destroys the myth that Israel had an impregnable air defense. The map at the head of this article reveals the sites targeted by Iran. Based on the videos of strikes in Haifa and Tel Aviv, I think this map accurately portrays the massive scale of the Iranian attack. For the first time in its history, Israel took a major beating.

According to various Israeli media reports, damage spanned residential buildings, scientific infrastructure (e.g., labs at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot), the Israeli Defense Ministry complex, and commercial hubs like the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Iran also struck a military target near the Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva. The medical center was hit by the blast wave, which caused extensive structural damage, a chemical leak, and dozens of injuries. The Israeli press claimed this was a direct strike on Soroka, but the fact that no one was killed undermines that claim.

Iran also struck the following residential areas, reportedly targeting Israeli military and intelligence officials:

Bat Yam: 9 killed, ~200 wounded; high-rise apartments destroyed.

Ramat Gan: Nine buildings destroyed, hundreds displaced.

Haifa and Tel Aviv: Strikes near military HQs (“Kirya”) and civilian neighborhoods.

Iran also caused extensive damage to the Port of Haifa and the Port of Ashdod (Note, I had no information on the latter when I posted yesterday.), as well as the refineries at Haifa and Ashdod. Israel has maintained a complete blackout on the damage to its military and intelligence facilities, but the sites identified on the map above indicate that Iran likely enjoyed similar success as that observed in Haifa and Tel Aviv.

Top Hegseth Aide Escorted Out of Pentagon in Leak Probe

A senior advisor to Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was escorted out of the Pentagon and placed on administrative leave, according to a Defense Department official.

Dan Caldwell was suspended over an “unauthorized disclosure” of information amid an ongoing investigation into leaks from within the Pentagon. Caldwell, a foreign policy realist, previously worked with the restraint-oriented think tank Defense Priorities and Concerned Veterans for America, which was formerly led by Hegseth. He has been a vocal advocate for significantly reducing the U.S. military presence in Europe and withdrawing troops from Iraq and Syria.

The Pentagon recently announced an effort to identify leakers from within the Defense Department regarding “recent unauthorized disclosures of national security information.” The announcement said that the DoD would use polygraph exams to identify who was allegedly leaking sensitive or secret data.

“The use of polygraphs in the execution of this investigation will be in accordance with applicable law and policy,” DOD Chief of Staff Joe Kasper wrote in a memo. “This investigation will commence immediately and culminate in a report to the Secretary of Defense.”

“The report will include a complete record of unauthorized disclosures within the Department of Defense and recommendations to improve such efforts,” the memo said.

The memo also noted that “information identifying a party responsible for an unauthorized disclosure” would be referred for criminal prosecution.

Caldwell’s close ties to Hegseth were highlighted in a leaked Signal chat about U.S. strikes on the Houthis, in which Hegseth identified him as the Pentagon’s point of contact for the operation. The private conversation was exposed after National Security Advisor Mike Waltz accidentally added The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the group.

This leak is separate from the one involving someone leaking classified U.S. intelligence about the bombs dropped on Iran.

Last Christian Town In West Bank Attacked And Besieged By Israeli Settlers

The last entirely-Christian town in the Israeli-controlled West Bank is enduring a wave of attacks by violent Jewish settlers, a local church leader says, prompting families to flee and leading clergy to declare the town is "no longer safe" for its inhabitants. Ominously, settlers have also set up an "outpost" on the fringe of that town Taybeh, Ramallah a 4,500-year-old community with huge significance in the story of Jesus Christ.

“The town, which the Gospel of John (11:54) refers to as ‘Ephraim’ — the place Jesus withdrew to before his passion — is no longer safe for its people today," Father Bashar Fawadleh, parish priest of Taybeh's Church of Christ the Redeemer, told the Catholic, Arabic-language ACI MENA news service. "We do not live in peace but in daily fear and siege…Since last October, more than 10 families have left Taybeh due to fear from ongoing violence and harassment."

This is only the latest in an ongoing pattern of aggression directed toward Taybeh's inhabitants, a pattern that has also included stealing farm equipment, and destroying crops with fire or by releasing settlers' cattle to devour them, Catholic News Agency reports.

Settlers have established an outpost on the town's eastern edge, on the remains of a farmhouse abandoned by Christians who'd fled about a year ago under the growing settler campaign of violence and intimidation. An "outpost" is a Jewish settlement on Palestinian land that's not authorized by the Israeli government. Outposts typically begin with something as small as a tent or a van, and are frequently situated on hilltops or agricultural land. In the case of "herding outposts," settlers will bring livestock that they allow to graze over a wide area with the goal of establishing a larger claim. Despite outposts' lack of government permission at the outset, the Israeli government often legalizes them retroactively, cementing the Palestinians' loss of the land. (Note, there are both Christian and Muslim Palestinians, and both varieties experience the iniquities associated with being non-Jewish in the West Bank.)
