Was reading today in a book about the argument between philosopher Wittgenstein and Carl Popper.

There was an excerpt of a sinister letter from the NAZI authorities regarding W. 's ancestry. They were ready to classify him a Jew.

IT WAS DEAD SERIOUS.

It's all according to your ethnicity, with these freaks. Never mind he never practiced Judaism and two of his Grandparents were Christian.

And he was a Catholic.

It's a RACIAL philosophy, Like Zohran's!

He's a NAZI racists, persecuting White people - they have to pay higher taxes.

"anglo saxon" Can't have a job, medical care, income. WTH. . ..

Weird Jews support it, right?

Ludwig Wittgenstein, the Austrian-British philosopher, was indeed considered a Jew by the Nazis under their racial laws, despite his complex personal and religious background. The Nazi regime's Nuremberg Laws of 1935 defined Jewishness primarily by ancestry rather than religious practice. According to these laws, anyone with three or more Jewish grandparents was classified as a Jew, regardless of their own religious beliefs or cultural identity.

Wittgenstein was born into a wealthy Viennese family of Jewish descent. His paternal grandparents were Jewish, but his father, Karl Wittgenstein, was raised as a Christian, and his mother, Leopoldine, was Catholic. Ludwig himself was baptized and raised as a Catholic, and he did not practice Judaism. However, under the Nuremberg Laws, Wittgenstein’s Jewish ancestry through his grandparents would have classified him as a "Mischling" (a person of mixed Jewish and non-Jewish descent) or potentially a full Jew, depending on the specific interpretation of his family tree by Nazi authorities.

After the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938), Wittgenstein’s family faced scrutiny due to their Jewish heritage. The Wittgenstein family was prominent and wealthy, and their status as industrialists offered some initial leverage. Ludwig, who had taken British citizenship in 1939, was living in the UK at the time and was not directly targeted. However, his siblings in Austria, particularly his sisters, faced significant pressure. The family negotiated with Nazi authorities to have their racial status reclassified, leveraging their wealth and influence. They were eventually granted "Mischling" status, which afforded them some protection from the full extent of Nazi persecution, though this came at a significant financial cost, including the transfer of substantial family assets to the Reich.

In summary, while Wittgenstein himself was not actively practicing Judaism and identified as a Christian, the Nazis’ racial criteria would have classified him as Jewish or partially Jewish based on his ancestry. His family’s wealth and his residence in the UK spared him from direct persecution, but his Jewish heritage placed his family in a precarious position under Nazi rule.
