Peter Thiel Warns: One-World Government A Greater Threat Than AI Or Climate Change

In a wide-ranging interview on the future and global existential risks, billionaire technology investor Peter Thiel raised alarms not only about familiar threats like nuclear war, climate change, and artificial intelligence but also about what he sees as a more insidious danger: the rise of a one-world totalitarian state. Speaking to the New York Times’ Ross Douthat, Thiel argued that the default political response to global crises—centralized, supranational governance—could plunge humanity into authoritarianism.

Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, shared his worries using examples from dystopian sci-fi stories. “There’s a risk of nuclear war, environmental disaster, bioweapons, and certain types of risks with AI,” Thiel explained to Douthat, suggesting that the push for global governance as a solution to these threats could culminate in a “bad singularity” - a one-world state that stifles freedom under the guise of safety.

Thiel critiqued what he described as a reflexive call for centralized control in times of peril.

“The default political solution people have for all these existential risks is one-world governance,” Thiel observed, pointing to proposals for a strengthened United Nations to control nuclear arsenals or global compute governance to regulate AI development, including measures to “log every single keystroke” to prevent dangerous programming. Such solutions, the investor warned, risk creating a surveillance state that sacrifices individual liberty for security.

Regional bank just defaulted Friday. RB plus PE loan exposure is unspooling. CRE stress picking up speed. $IAT and $KDE showing early cracks.

One of the regionals slipped under the waterline last Friday. Not national news yet. Not big enough to trigger Fed chatter. But it defaulted. Real estate and private equity exposure stacked too high. Cash ran thin. Doors didn’t close, but they missed a payment.

This combo is the weak joint. Regional banks leaned hard into real estate from 2020 through 2022. Office loans made sense when rates were near zero. Refinance markets were liquid. Now they’re stuck rolling paper into a 7% world with low occupancy and stale collateral. At the same time, many of these banks lent into sponsor-backed deals where private equity stacked leverage high and layered risk wide. That’s now backfiring.

Borrowers are struggling. Equity sponsors are exiting. Banks are left with the top of the debt stack and nowhere to hand it off. Office delinquencies are running hot. S&P’s latest numbers put CRE delinquencies at 2.3% in Q1, up from 1.6% a year ago. Some banks are running north of 5% in office alone.

And that’s just the on-book stuff. Off-balance sheet exposures from fund participations, JV mezz deals, and warehouse facilities are murkier. The regulators know this. The market is starting to sniff it out.

Liquidity is deteriorating. The BTFP is gone. Deposit costs are still climbing. Banks are bleeding margin and crossing their fingers that held-to-maturity losses don’t become real. But one borrower missing covenants on a $90 million downtown office tower changes the narrative fast.

Look at $KDE and $IAT. Neither is collapsing. But both are slipping, and volume just jumped. A few more of these Friday events and the floor gets shaky. Quiet defaults rarely stay quiet for long.

'He doesn't like Rudd': Kevin Rudd deemed 'biggest issue' blocking Anthony Albanese meeting with President Donald Trump

Australia has been urged to dump Kevin Rudd as US Ambassador, with Donald Trump's former pollster claiming he is one of the major reasons Anthony Albanese has been unable to schedule a face-to-face meeting with the US President.

Donald Trump’s former pollster has urged Australia to dump Kevin Rudd as its US Ambassador, telling Sky News Australia he is a major barrier to Anthony Albanese securing a meeting with the US President.

Renowned US pollster Brent Buchanan told Sky News Australia that Mr Rudd’s role as Australia’s representative was a key reason Mr Albanese had been unable to schedule a face-to-face meeting with the US President.

Mr Buchanan's firm works exclusively for Republican clients and has conducted polling for all three of President Trump's campaigns.

“I think he doesn't like the current ambassador, and that's one of the biggest issues,” Mr Buchanan told Sky News host Laura Jayes.
