Regarding Dade-Collier (Alligator Alcatraz). Whoever came up with that name should get a trophy, btw.
The runway at Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport (TNT) is indeed one of the longest in the United States. Its single runway, designated 09/27, measures 10,499 feet (approximately 3,200 meters) long. This length is comparable to the runways at Miami International Airport.
While the airport was initially envisioned as part of a much larger project to build the world's largest airport (back when it was thought that supersonic passenger service was going to be done on a much larger scale), it was ultimately scaled down and currently serves as a training facility and general aviation airport. The runway's length makes it suitable for accommodating large aircraft and supporting pilot training exercises. The remote location would have meant less complaints about noise and sonic booms from the more populated areas of Florida.
Here is a clip from two years ago when a Cuban flew a vintage Russian biplane into Dade-Collier. Tomorrow it will host Air Force One.
