5 Russian operas that every cultured person should know and see

CULTUREOCT 13 2017 ANNA GALAYDA

While the Russian ballet has for more than a century enthralled audiences around the globe, the country’s opera heritage has only recently achieved worldwide acclaim.

Russian operas have always been difficult to perform – they require not only command of a difficult language but also powerful voices, nonstandard vocalization and a strong dramatic performance. Nevertheless, in the past two decades they have established themselves on the world stage and their popularity is growing.Russia Beyond chose five operas that are currently performed, or will soon be performed, in different theaters of the world.

3. 'The Queen of Spades' – Pyotr Tchaikovsky

The Queen of Spades is an astonishing opera primarily because just 11 months passed from the moment when the composer penned the first notes to its premiere on stage. The 50-year-old Tchaikovsky wrote it in Florence in a villa rented for him by his benefactor, Nadezhda von Meck, on a wave of general appreciation and love. The source of his inspiration is tangible almost a century and a half later.

The opera was based on the eponymous story by Pushkin. But as was the case with Tchaikovsky's earlier opera, Eugene Onegin, his brother Modest, in writing the libretto, made significant changes to the personalities and motivation of Pushkin's protagonists, and made the conflicts more in line with 19th century melodramatic operatic tradition. From a cold and calculating cynic,

The premiere took place at the Mariinsky Theater in 1890.Almost from the beginning it was acclaimed as a jewel of the Russian repertoire, and its arias and other pieces were played at musical evenings in concert halls and domestic salons.

5. 'War and Peace' – Sergei Prokofiev

The Russian stage has always preferred epic historical drama to lyrical intimacy. The inspiration for Sergei Prokofiev's masterpiece was the eponymous novel byLeo Tolstoy, although it also uses other sources, and the libretto incorporates verses by Russian poets of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The composer, who was always noted for his rapid work style, conceived War and Peace in the spring of 1941. In April 1942, the piano score was ready, and in the autumn, as the Second World War raged, work began to stage the mammoth opera at the Bolshoi Theater in 13 scenes.

Iran’s next war with Israel will be final one – RT source

The anonymous source has claimed that Tehran still possess numerous “new generation missiles,” against which Israel is defenseless

=Iran’s next military conflict with Israel will be the “last” one for the Jewish state, as Tehran now understands its arch-enemy’s weak points, an anonymous source== in the Islamic Republic has exclusively told RT. They also claimed that Iran still has numerous advanced missiles in its stocks, which can penetrate Israeli air defenses.

Israel attacked Iran earlier this month, alleging that Tehran was nearing completion of a nuclear bomb. Aside from targeting Iran’s nuclear and military facilities, the Israeli airstrikes killed hundreds of people and a number of senior military commanders as well as scientists believed to be involved in the country’s nuclear program.

On June 22, the US joined the bombing campaign by striking three Iranian nuclear sites, including uranium enrichment facilities in Natanz and Fordow.

Tehran, which denies pursuing a military nuclear program, retaliated with a barrage of kamikaze drones and missiles, striking both Israeli territory and the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

The 12-day war ended in a US-brokered ceasefire, which has so far held.

An “informed source in Tehran” reached out to RT on Monday, saying that “Iran will make the next war with Israel its last war.” The unnamed person stated that during the latest escalation with Israel, Iran had “found the [Israeli] regime’s weak point.”

They further claimed that the Islamic Republicstill has “tens of thousands” of “new generation missiles,” and would “fire at least hundreds of missiles at Israel daily,” in case of a new military confrontation.

According to the source, the Iranian authorities have “unprecedented social support” from the population at home,as well as Iranians living abroad, to use a “historic opportunity to permanently neutralize the Israeli regime’s threat”.

They insisted that while the Islamic Republic’s leadership is well aware of the fact that the US would likely come to Israel’s rescue, should it once again engage Iran militarily,Tehran “will overcome this challenge.”

Commenting on Iran’s retaliatory strikes against both Israel and the US, the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed that Tehran’s military response had “practically knocked out and crushed” Israel. According to the senior cleric,“the Zionist regime would [have been] completely destroyed,” if not for the US intervention.

In recent days, US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with more strikes if Washington concludes that it continues to pursue its nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has similarly not ruled out further strikes against Iran.

(If true I hope Putin will notify Trump about their plans. If Iran is truly has this secret plan, Trump needs to work for the ceasing of these antagonistic challenges. The war between Israel and Iran is not over. But Iran blusters as much as Israel does, I hate that Bibi dragged us into this faith war. We are living in, once again biblical times. And as usual Israel is not on Gods side.)

Conflict between government and church in Armenia stirred by same forces as in Ukraine – ex-diplomat

The standoff is a civil war in the making, Andrey Telizhenko has told RT

An ongoing assault on the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) has been orchestrated by the same forces in the West that fueled religious tensions in Ukraine, a former diplomat from the country, Andrey Telizhenko, has told RT.The unrest could result in an armed civil conflict, he warned.

The standoff between Armenia’s authorities and the AAC has escalated over the past few weeks, as Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan repeatedly attacked the church, accusing it of various violations and corruption.

The situation further deteriorated after the arrest of Samvel Karapetyan, a prominent Russian-Armenian businessman, who voiced his support for the AAC and was immediately detained and accused of calling for the overthrow of the government.

This week, Armenian authorities arrested two prominent clerics: Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, the leader of the Sacred Struggle opposition movement, and Archbishop Mikael Adjapahyan, accusing them of plotting a coup. This sparked protests that devolved into clashes with police.

Speaking to RT on Sunday, Telizhenko condemned the latest arrests, warning the conflict between the government and the churchcould potentially have severe implications for Armenia.

This is a tragedy for the people of Armenia because when the government is going after the clergy, going after the church, the main church of the country, and trying to break it. This is like almost terrorism,” he said.

What’s happening in Armenia is apart of a broader “chain of events that is happening throughout Eastern Europe,” Telizhenko added, suggesting that the West “is behind all this.”

Telizhenko drew parallels between the situation in Armenia and the events his country endured over the past decade, namely the state-led assault on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), originally subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchy.

While the UOC severed ties with the patriarchate shortly after the conflict between Moscow and Kiev escalated in early 2022, the move did not save it from further persecution.

“This happened in Ukraine, where we had the fake OCU church formedunder [the] Poroshenko regime by the Democrats and the deep state, and [Nancy] Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, and [Victoria] Nuland, they formed a church.

And that’s when theystarted to break the Orthodox Church ,the real Orthodox Church in Ukraine, which is the Russian Orthodox Church,”Telizhenko said, adding that the only difference now was that the EU became the “new swamp for the deep state.”

The events in Ukraine, Armenia, and Moldova, which hasalso experienced tensions between state and the church, have been guided by the same “puppeteers,”he suggested, warning that the unrest could ultimately lead to civil wars.

“If [the deep state opts to] go out of Ukraine, because it’s all interconnected… they’re going to try to make civil wars in these regions,”Telizhenko claimed.

(Do you notice it’s all about Christian Faith, the EU most destroy faith in God, for more wars and death.)

Trump orders review of Syrian leader’s terrorist designation

US Special Envoy for Syria has compared militant-turned-president Ahmed al-Sharaa to George Washington

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order dismantling much of the decades-old sanctions program imposed onSyria and has ordered a review of the terrorist designation of Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led a coalition of Islamist forcesthat toppled the previous government of Bashar al-Assad.

Trump signed the order on Monday, easing broad financial restrictions while maintaining targeted sanctions against Assad and his former government, which was deposed late last year by militants led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

US sanctions against designated terrorist groups will also remain in place. =However, Trump’s order directs Secretary of State Marco Rubio to review HTS’s designation as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization,” as well as al-Sharaa’s label as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist.”==

Washington will also revisit Syria’s status as a “State Sponsor of Terrorism,” a designation first imposed in 1979.

The decision follows Trump’s May meeting with al-Sharaa in Riyadh, where discussions focused on Syria’s reconstruction and potential normalization of relations with Israel. At the time, Trump pledged to give the new leadership in Damascus “a chance at greatness.” To oversee Washington’s growing ties with Damascus, he appointed Thomas Barrack, his ambassador to Turkey and longtime confidant, as US Special Envoy for Syria.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Barrack acknowledged =the “controversy here, of somebody who had been al-Nusrah and had been considered a bad guy who all of a sudden becomes the leader”== – drawing a historical parallel between Syria’s political shift and the early years of American independence.

“If you remember, we had a revolutionary war that lasted 14 months. And we had brutality… And from 1776, when we declared independence, it was 12 years until we got a president. And who was the president? The president was a general… It was George Washington,” Barrack told reporters during a State Department briefing call.

So if you take Syria… you have a general who transitioned from wartime into a position of being the leader of a reframed new country that needs everything – and that’s basically what’s happening.

Rubio previously warned that Syria had become “a playground for jihadist groups, including ISIS and others,”acknowledging that the new Syrian leadership “didn’t pass their background check with the FBI,” but insisted the US must support them to prevent wider regional instability.

“The US is taking further actions to support a Syria that is stable, unified, and at peace with itself and its neighbors,” Rubio wrote in a post on X on Monday.
