The internet was is anonymous but it wan't designed to protect anonymity just to make connections easy. The security we have is like the locks on a summer house. They don't really keep any serious burglars out but they stop strangers from walking in when your doing plies at the barre.
The intelligence agencies love it. The internet is completely transparent to them as it is to most poor mutts who sign up for FetLife or RentaBabe sites. Those were started by people who don't just pimp electronically. They can sell names from their DB to intel agencies or extort them. They love the internet because it can never be fixed and the more thieves the more money for the antivirus and anti intrusion software companies. It's a profitable arms race they hope to carry over into the future.
That will not be possible because advanced civilization depends on, as in requires for function, a secure identity based network.
