The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved hundreds of drugs without proof that they work—and in some cases, despite evidence that they cause harm.

That’s the finding of a blistering two-year investigation by medical journalists Jeanne Lenzer and Shannon Brownlee, published by The Lever.

Reviewing more than 400 drug approvals between 2013 and 2022, the authors found the agency repeatedly ignored its own scientific standards.

One expert put it bluntly—the FDA’s threshold for evidence “can’t go any lower because it’s already in the dirt.”

A System Built on Weak Evidence

The findings were damning—73% of drugs approved by the FDA during the study period failed to meet all four basic criteria for demonstrating “substantial evidence” of effectiveness.

Those four criteria—presence of a control group, replication in two well-conducted trials, blinding of participants and investigators, and the use of clinical endpoints like symptom relief or extended survival—are supposed to be the bedrock of drug evaluation.

Yet only 28% of drugs met all four criteria—40 drugs met none.

These aren’t obscure technicalities—they are the most basic safeguards to protect patients from ineffective or dangerous treatments.

But under political and industry pressure, the FDA has increasingly abandoned them in favour of speed and so-called “regulatory flexibility.”

Timur Ivanov has been found guilty of embezzlement and fraud

Russia’s former deputy defense minister, Timur Ivanov, has been sentenced to 13 years in a penal colony after being found guilty of embezzling state funds, the Moscow City Court announced on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old, arrested in April 2024, previously held senior roles in Russia’s energy and construction sectors. Before his appointment as deputy defense minister in 2016, Ivanov led the state contractor Oboronstroy and worked at several major firms. In his government role, he oversaw large-scale military construction projects.

The court found Ivanov and his former subordinate Anton Filatov guilty of embezzling 216.6 million rubles ($2.8 million) during the 2015 purchase of two ferries, carried out by Oboronstroy on behalf of the Defense Ministry for the Kerch Strait crossing. The pair was also convicted of stealing and laundering 3.9 billion rubles ($50 million) that had belonged to the now-bankrupt Interkommerz Bank.

Both men have denied any wrongdoing. In his final statement, Ivanov insisted that the ferry deal was lawful and had even earned him a state award. He argued that even if there were grounds for prosecution, they bore no relation to the current charges.

Filatov was sentenced to 12 and a half years in a penal colony and fined $318,000 – he claimed the case had been based on investigative errors and “speculative” conclusions.

Ivanov, who also faces two separate bribery charges, was fined $1.2 million and stripped of state honors, including the title of Merited Builder of Russia. The court also approved the seizure of more than $32 million worth of his assets, including real estate, vehicles, and bank holdings.

According to RBK, the defense intends to appeal the verdict, citing procedural violations and a lack of direct evidence.

Ivanov was among a number of top military officials arrested following a major reshuffle at the Defense Ministry last year.

So if you don’t want Iran to be the graveyard of human civilization, it’s time to face some uncomfortable facts about Israel’s war against all of us. It’s time to understand, without any evasions or equivocations, the sort of nightmare Israel is planning for the world.

Here are a few of the most crucial points.

1. This Is about Israeli Hegemony – with American Support

Israel is not “under attack.” Israel never faces a military threat unless it deliberately creates one – as it is doing now, in the hope of stoking a regional conflagration.

Don’t take my word for that, by the way. One of Israel’s most prominent military historians, Ze’ev Maoz, demonstrated in a magisterial study some years ago that all of Israel’s wars – with the possible exception of its “war of independence” in 1948 – were “wars of choice,” not of necessity. Israel attacked its neighbors because it wanted to, not because they endangered it.

And those, at least, were attacks on states. Today Israel only wages massacres (as in Gaza). So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that its terror campaign against Iran has demonstrated the usual priorities: apart from early strikes intended to block the prey from fighting back, Israel has largely targeted residential buildings – where it has killed children along with hundreds of adult civilians – and Iran’s much-needed civilian infrastructure.

And yes, folks, Iran’s nuclear program is a part of that civilian infrastructure. Iran has never built a single nuclear warhead, and repeated inspections of its nuclear facilities have shown again and again that it has had no intention of building an atomic weapon for at least some twenty years.

If Israel’s criminal assault has yielded any benefit, it’s the proof that Israel has been lying for decades about Iran “readying for war.” Israel has been readying an assault, all right – but Iran’s obvious vulnerability to the attack proved just how unprepared it was for a military encounter.

So what is Israel’s real goal? Anyone who follows the ravings of its officials knows by now that Israel is no longer content to murder helpless West Bank civilians or to torture more Palestinians in its dungeons. Even the Gaza genocide is only the first step toward a new sort of future.

Unilever cuts off funding for Ben & Jerry’s foundation amid tensions over Gaza, audit

Unilever is cutting off millions in funding for Ben & Jerry’s charitable foundation after it refused to provide audit documents, escalating what has become a microcosm for corporate “woke” wars.

Peter ter Kulve, who runs Unilever’s ice cream business, told Ben & Jerry’s executives in an email that the foundation’s trustees “have continued to resist basic oversight” and are not cooperating with requests from corporate auditors ahead of the ice cream business’ spinoff from Unilever. The probe into the foundation began in part because of its giving to pro-Palestinian organizations, Semafor reported earlier this year.

“It represents a marked departure from the norms of charitable organizations, for whom transparency is typically a bedrock operating principle,” ter Kulve wrote in the email, which was seen by Semafor.

The Ben & Jerry’s foundation distributed more than $5 million of Unilever’s money in 2022, to mostly progressive organizations, and has done so ever since the quirky, left-leaning Vermont creamery was acquired by the corporate giant in 2000. Since then, Ben & Jerry’s politics have been a headache for its parent, and the tensions between the two have grown more acute as the business community got swept into the culture wars — first pulled to the left in the mid-2010s, then retreating rightward under the second Trump administration.

Ter Kulve wrote that management of the soon-to-be standalone ice cream company had met with foundation trustees and “consistently sought to accommodate concerns” they raised, including switching audit firms and promising to keep certain information about grantees private.

“The Foundation is a powerful force for good and has played a meaningful role in advancing the Ben & Jerry’s social mission,” ter Kulve told executives. “We remain committed to that mission.”

Representatives for Unilever and Ben & Jerry’s did not respond to a request for comment. A lawyer for the foundation’s trustees didn’t immediately comment.

Unilever decided to spin off its ice cream business last year. The audit of Ben and Jerry’s foundation was part of that process. But it has devolved into a turf war between Unilever and the foundation, whose trustees claim their parent company is using the transaction as a pretense to attack its charitable giving.

The troubles date back to at least 2021, when Ben & Jerry’s said it would stop selling its products in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. Unilever sold the regional Ben & Jerry’s license in response.

Ben & Jerry’s independent directors sued Unilever in November, accusing their parent company of silencing the ice cream maker’s statements in support of Palestinian refugees. Other court documents allege that Unilever muzzled Ben & Jerry’s social media posts that mentioned President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Nelson Peltz, the billionaire investor and Unilever director who introduced the president to Musk.

Over 170 charities call for end to Gaza aid distribution system

The charities called for countries to press Israel to halt the GHF scheme and reinstate aid coordinated through the United Nations.

More than 500 people have been killed in mass shootings near aid distribution centers or transport routes guarded by Israeli forces since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started operating in late May, according to medical authorities in Gaza.

The GHF uses private US security and logistics companies to get supplies into Gaza, largely bypassing a UN-led system that Israel says had let militants divert aid. The United Nations has called the plan "inherently unsafe" and a violation of humanitarian impartiality rules.

As of early afternoon in Geneva on Tuesday, where the joint declaration was released, 171 charities had signed on to the call for countries to press Israel to halt the GHF scheme and reinstate aid coordinated through the United Nations.

"Palestinians in Gaza face an impossible choice: starve or risk being shot while trying desperately to reach food to feed their families," the statement said. Groups signing it included Oxfam, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and Amnesty International. In a response, the GHF told Reuters it had delivered more than 52 million meals in five weeks and said other humanitarian groups had "nearly all of their aid looted."

Doctors Without Borders told reporters in an online press briefing on Tuesday that within the last month, two of its small primary health centers had received 22 dead and 548 wounded people. Those who died had received fatal wounds to the chest and abdomen.

"They are not warning shots. They are shots directed towards the people," said Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa, one of MSF's emergency coordinators in Gaza.

In more than 50% of the mass casualty incidents near food distribution sites, children have been shot and killed, said Rachel Cummings, Humanitarian Director for Save the Children in Gaza.

'Children say they want to die'

"Children have told us they want to die… to be with their mother or father who have been killed. They want to be in paradise because there is food and water," said Cummings.

The Israeli military acknowledged on Monday that Palestinian civilians have been harmed at aid distribution centers in Gaza, saying that Israeli forces had been issued new instructions following what it called "lessons learned."

Israel has repeatedly said its forces operate near the centers in order to prevent the aid from falling into the hands of Hamas terrorists.

This marks a staggering 51 percent increase compared to 2019 levels, putting the company further away from its goal of halving carbon emissions by 2030.

In the report, Google cites several factors outside its “direct control” that are making it more challenging to achieve its climate goals. The rapid evolution of AI technology is one of the primary reasons, as it could make the company’s future energy needs and emissions trajectories more difficult to predict. The increasing energy consumption associated with AI development and deployment is a growing concern not only for Google but for other tech giants like Microsoft and Meta as well.

A deeper look into the report’s appendix reveals that Google’s total emissions actually reached 15,185,200 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is roughly equivalent to the emissions from nearly 40 gas-fired power plants over a year. This figure includes categories of supply chain pollution that the company considers out of its control or “peripheral” to the core business of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, such as certain purchased goods and services and food programs.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt argued in 2024 that we should ignore the environmental impact of AI because Silicon Valley’s environmentalist claims were always a fantasy. As Breitbart News previously reported:

The Trump administration has approved a new arms deal for Israel that will provide the country with $510 million worth of Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMS), kits that turn bombs into precision-guided weapons, as the US continues to provide military aid to support the genocidal war in Gaza.

According to the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the State Department notified Congress of the sale of 3,845 JDAMS for 2,000-pound BLU-109 bombs and 3,280 JDAMS for 500-pound MK 82 bombs. The deal also includes US “government and contractor engineering, logistics, and technical support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.”

The DSCA said Boeing is the principal contractor for the deal. The notification of the potential deal begins a time period when US lawmakers could potentially block the sale, but there’s little opposition to US military support for Israel within Congress, despite the many war crimes the US is implicated in by providing Israel with weapons.

Fragments of bombs with US-provided JDAM kits have been found at the scene of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that have massacred many civilians. In 2023, Human Rights Watch said it identified JDAM fragments that were found in two airstrikes on homes in central Gaza that killed 43 civilians, including 19 children, and 14 women.

It’s unclear at this point how the deal will be financed, but many arms sales to Israel are funded by US military aid, and US assistance to Israel has significantly increased since October 7, 2023. According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, in that time, US funding has covered an estimated 70% of Israel’s war-related military spending.

California moves to allow non-related adults to consent to medical care for minors, enroll them in school to support immigrant families

Examples of a "nonrelative extended family member" include teachers, medical professionals, clergy, neighbors, and family friends.

A bill working its way through the California State Legislature would allow individuals not related to a child in the state to consent to medical care for a minor, potentially without informing the child's legal guardians.

The bill, AB495, passed the Assembly on June 3 in a 62 to 7 vote. It is now in the state Senate, where hearings are set for July 1 and 7. Celeste Rodriguez introduced the legislation in the Assembly.

The bill amends existing law, which allows a caregiver 18 years of age or older who is related to the minor to sign a "caregiver’s authorization affidavit" and enroll the minor in school, as well as consent to medical care. Under the amendment, those persons who are authorized to sign a caregiver’s authorization affidavit are expanded to include a "nonrelative extended family member."

"Nonrelative extended family member" is defined in the legislation as being "any adult caregiver who has an established familial or mentoring relationship with the child or who has an established familial relationship with a relative of the child." Examples include teachers, medical professionals, clergy, neighbors, and family friends.

The amended caregiver’s authorization affidavit includes a section in which a caregiver is required to check a box that states they have either advised the minor’s parent about their intent to authorize medical care, or that "I am unable to contact the parent(s) or other person(s) having legal custody of the minor at this time, to notify them of my intended authorization."

The form allows for medical care provided at schools, such as immunizations and physical examinations, as well as medical care offered outside of schools, such as dental care or mental health treatment.

The bill also amends the current Health and Safety Code to add that licensed child day care facilities, unless as required by state or federal law, "shall not collect information or documents regarding citizenship or immigration status of pupils or their family members."

​Is the US now funding the bloodbath at Gaza aid centers?

Many human rights organizations say it should shut down. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have killed hundreds of Palestinians at or around its aid centers. And yet, the U.S. has committed no less than $30 million toward the controversial, Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

As famine-like conditions grip Gaza, the GHF says it has given over 50 million meals to Palestinians at its four aid centers in central and southern Gaza Strip since late May. These centers are operated by armed U.S. private contractors, and secured by IDF forces present at or near them.

Through almost-daily email campaigns and X posts, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation contends its work provides critical aid to Palestinians. But these assertions ring hollow when juxtaposed against the disastrous, widely condemned state of its Gaza operations, where IDF soldiers have reportedly been instructed to shoot Palestinians at or around their centers almost every day

GHF's peculiar media strategy

The GHF passes itself off as an independenthumanitarian group. In fact, it was conceived by Israeli officials at the beginning of the war, with buy-in from Israeli tech investors and venture capitalists, as well as stafffromIsrael’s state-aid coordinators, or COGAT (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories). Israeli opposition lawmakers allege that Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, has funded the GHF. Meanwhile, former CIA officer Paul Reilly was allegedly in on the ground floor of the scheme and founded Safe Reach Solutions, one of the two U.S.-based private contracting firms managing the aid hubs. A former U.S. Special Forces soldier heads the other.

For their part, Israeli officials say the GHF is the only safe way to get direct aid to the Palestinians inside. The World Food Programme has found it nearly impossible to operate in Gaza due to the security situation, often halting its operations, while Israel banned the UN program UNRWA, which was the predominant source of aid for Palestinians there, in January.

Eager to depict itself as a force for good, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation inundates reporters with near-daily communications boasting of the number of meals provided to Gazans, and frequently featuring photos of smiling Palestinians, especially children, receiving aid. Its X account and new, flashy website employ similar messaging and photos.

The GHF has even recruited Shahar Segal, the prominent restaurateur and business partner of celebrity Israeli chef Eyal Shan, as its spokesperson. Segal arguably isn’t the GHF’s only flack: State Department spokespersons Tammy Bruce and Tommy Pigott have repeatedly gushed over GHF aid operations at recent press briefings.

GHF’s other communications efforts are markedly less glamorous. Its Facebook page, for example, often posts announcements in Arabic about upcoming aid distributions. Often, the GHF posts that it’s distributing aid in a given location, only to announce minutes later it’s already handed out all the supplies.

The GHF routinely denounces Hamas in its communications. Like the Israeli government, it says Hamas has fabricated the narrative of Palestinians being harmed or killed by the IDF at their aid sites, even though the killings have been widely reported by numerous mainstream outlets, including Haaretz, Reuters and Al Jazeera.
