Fiji Says Chinese Military Base, Missiles Not Welcome In Pacific

The tiny South Pacific archipelago country of Fiji has come out firmly against China establishing a military base in the Pacific Islands, according to a statement of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka issued Wednesday.

He emphasized that China has no need for such a provocatively located base to demonstrate its military strength, citing its recent intercontinental ballistic missile test as evidence.

Rabuka provided clear acknowledgement that Pacific nations are grappling with how to respond to China’s growing efforts to expand its influence, in remarks given to the National Press Club in Canberra.

"Pacific leaders have consistently aimed for a diplomatic stance of being friendly with all and enemies to none — a challenging path, but one we believe is achievable," Rabuka said.

The problem is that Pacific Islands have become a key area of geopolitical competition between US and Chinese naval power for regional security influence, especially over the last decade, and as tensions over Taiwan independence continue to boil.

Fiji opposes establishment of a military base by China, he said, in response to queries on Beijing’s security ambitions in a region where it already has a security pact with the Solomon Islands and a police presence in several nations.

“If they want to come, who would welcome them?” he said. “Not Fiji.”

Rabuka is proposing an "Ocean of Peace" treaty that would bind the region to unity, allow for common solutions to regional issues that arise, and which would reject coercion as a tool for for political dominance. But as Germany's DW reviews:

Beijing has spent hundreds of millions of dollars constructing sports stadiums, government offices, hospitals and roads in Pacific countries such as Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

The charm offensive has already borne fruit with Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Nauru severing longstanding diplomatic links with Taiwan in favor of China.

Warren Buffett Donates 9.4M Berkshire Shares to the Gates Trust Despite Rumoured Rift With Bill Gates

Buffett's total donation of 12.35 million Berkshire shares is valued at $6 billion

Legendary investor Warren Buffett, 94, has commenced his previously announced estate planning strategy.

According to the latest US Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the Oracle of Omaha converted 8,239 class A shares of Berkshire Hathaway into 12.35 million class B shares of common stock, where each class A share is convertible into 1,500 class B shares.

Buffett then donated over 9.4 million of those converted class B shares to the Gates Foundation Trust. While the filing highlighted that these donations are pursuant to Buffett's lifetime commitments, it is unclear why Gates sold over 7.4 million class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway in the past three consecutive quarters.

Buffett's significant stock donation to the Gates Foundation comes despite a rumoured strained relationship with Bill Gates in recent years. Gates joined Berkshire Hathaway's board in 2004 until 2020, and Buffett served as a member of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation until 2021, shortly after the couple announced their divorce.

In 2006, Buffett had pledged to donate 85% of his Berkshire Hathaway stake to charity, most of which was supposed to go to Gates' foundation. However, he revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal last year that the donations to Gates' foundation would stop after he passes away.

Although Buffett didn't divulge many details behind his decision, the investor had earlier said while resigning from the Gates Foundation board that his goals are 100% in sync with those of the foundation, and that his 'physical participation is in no way needed to achieve these goals.'

2.9M Shares to Family Foundations as Part of Estate Planning

The regulatory filing with the SEC also revealed that Buffett donated 943,384 shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his late first wife, and 660,366 shares to each of the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation, which are run by his three children.

In an earlier news release, Buffett had said he plans to donate a total of 1.5 million class B shares to The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and 900,000 to each of the family foundations led by Howard Graham Buffett, Peter Buffett, and Susan Alice Buffett.

Buffett's elaborate estate plan will also see his eldest son, Howard, become Berkshire's non-executive chairman. While Howard thinks it won't be easy to assume that role and distribute his father's wealth according to his wishes, he is confident his siblings would come together and use their experiences to take risks that make a difference. 'I can tell you, we'll sit down in a room when the time comes, and we'll get it figured out pretty quickly,' he had said earlier.

The latest donation of over 12.35 million Berkshire shares is valued at almost £4.3 billion ($6 billion) based on the latest closing price of £352.47 ($485.77) per class B share. The filing showed that Buffett still holds 198,117 of class A Berkshire shares.

ICE HSI Newark operation makes 18 arrests, takes down Newark open-air drug market

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations Newark and multiple federal, state and local partners made 18 arrests of alleged co-conspirators for roles in a drug trafficking organization on July 1 in Newark, New Jersey.

The arrests are a result of a 14-month HSI Newark investigation with the Newark Police Department and the U.S. District Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

“In addition to the 18 arrests, HSI’s investigation led to federal charges filed against 24 individuals and we executed seven federal search warrants in and around Essex County, New Jersey,” said HSI Newark Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel during a press conference following the operation. “Law enforcement partnership and teamwork were essential in our success. I am proud to say these alleged conspirators operating the sale of narcotics primarily from the Bradley Court Public Housing Complex have been stopped thanks to thousands of hours of police work. The livelihood of the tenants throughout 10 three-story apartment buildings who have been plagued by this dangerous enterprise for far too long can now feel a sense of safety and security.”

On July 2, two additional defendants were arrested. Four remain at large.

HSI Newark’s investigation uncovered a complex criminal enterprise with ties to transnational organized crime, that distributed more than 400 grams of fentanyl and a kilo of heroin. During the takedown operation, approximately $113,000 dollars in bulk cash/drug proceeds, illicit firearms, ammunition, narcotics, including 28 bricks of fentanyl and heroin, and vehicles were seized.

According to the investigation, the defendants are members or associates of Sex, Money, Murder—a Blood affiliated criminal street gang (“Enterprise” or “the Enterprise”) that controls the drug trade in Bradley Court Housing Complex located near North Munn Avenue and Tremont Avenue in Newark. The Enterprise are also known as Munn Block, M-Blok, and Tombstone Gang (TSG). Munn Block are closely aligned with another Blood affiliated gang known as Voorhees, who operate around Voorhees Street—members and associates of the Enterprise refer to the collective union as “MunnHees”.

“It is critical for the public to understand that these individuals engaged in the most dangerous of action, were armed and were involved in shootings,” said SAC Patel. “They peddled narcotics to include fentanyl, heroin, and crack cocaine, all while risking the lives of those around them for power and money. Surveillance, undercover activity and electronic monitoring were just some of the necessary steps needed to bring these individuals to justice.”

Top Israel advocates tell Piers Morgan: ‘Never again’

The YouTube podcaster, who hosts antisemitic Holocaust revisionists, is facing a backlash for his sensationalism and rudeness.

Last Tuesday, English journalist Piers Morgan spent nearly 15 minutes of his YouTube talk show trying to prove he wasn’t antisemitic.

The effort was prompted by criticism from Israeli Cabinet Minister Amichai Chikli, whose portfolio includes combating Jew-hatred.

Chikli had accused the “Piers Morgan Uncensored” show of taking a “sharp and troubling descent into overt antisemitism” by repeatedly platforming Holocaust deniers such as Candace Owens and Dan Bilzerian.

During the June 24 interview, Morgan characteristically shouted over Chikli, repeating, “When have I been antisemitic?” and misrepresenting Chikli’s original criticism as an attack on his person.

Several pro-Israel past guests have vowed to boycott the show, citing what they described as Morgan’s growing hostility toward Israel advocates.

“Piers Morgan doesn’t shed light on antisemitism—he profits from it,” Shai Davidai, a Columbia University professor known for his pro-Israel activism, wrote on X Saturday. A previous guest on Morgan’s show, Davidai announced that he will not return.

Others had reached the same conclusion, including Foreign Ministry Special Envoy Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, who hosts “The Quad” on JNS-TV, and who last month decided to no longer appear on Morgan’s show.

Elica Le Bon, a British-Iranian non-Jewish Israel advocate, announced on Friday that she will never go back on, following a combative appearance the previous day. Former Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy also told JNS he will not return, recommending that other Israel advocates not do so either.

“In the days after Oct. 7, 2023, Morgan’s coverage of Israel was fairly balanced,” Chikli told JNS. “But then he began platforming antisemitic kooks like Candace Owens, offering only mild pushback.”

Chikli said he had appeared on Morgan’s show to “expose this—and it looks like it worked.”

Two dead, 43 missing after ferry sinks in rough seas near Bali

Rescuers today are searching for 43 people missing in rough seas overnight after a ferry carrying 65 people sank near Indonesia’s resort island of Bali.

The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving East Java’s Ketapang port late yesterday, the National Search and Rescue Agency said in a statement.

It was bound for Bali’s Gilimanuk port, a 50-kilometre trip.

The ferry carried 53 passengers, 12 crew members and 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks, it said.

Two bodies have been recovered and 20 were rescued, many of them unconscious after drifting in choppy waters for hours, said Banyuwangi police chief Rama Samtama Putra.

Nine boats, including two tugboats and two inflatable boats, have been searching for the missing people since last night, battling waves up to two metres high in the overnight darkness.

Ferry tragedies are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where ferries are often used as transport and safety regulations can lapse.

Delhi Bans Fuel for Older Vehicles in Pollution Crackdown

Starting July 1, Delhi has enforced a strict ban on refueling older vehicles as part of a broader effort to reduce air pollution, according to the Economic Times.

Under the new rule, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles over 10 years are prohibited from buying fuel at any petrol pump in the capital.
