The Trump administration will focus on finding a replacement for Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell this fall, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC Thursday, adding that officials had "a lot of good candidates."

Bessent said it was up to the Fed to decide interest rates, although he added that if the U.S. central bank did not cut interest rates soon, any potential rate cut in September could be higher.

Asked if one could head both Treasury and the Fed at the same time, Bessent said that hadn't been done since the 1930s, but did not explicitly rule out such a solution. Bessent has been named as a potential contender for the Fed role.

Treasury Secretary Bessent Not Ruling Out Fed Job

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent didn't rule out becoming the next Federal Reserve chair when asked about a potential dual role on CNBC's "Money Movers" on Thursday.

When the wide-ranging conversation touched on President Donald Trump's feud with Fed Chair Jerome Powell, host Sara Eisen mentioned the speculation that Bessent was in the running to replace Powell.

"Your name gets floated out there," Eisen said. "You have some odds on Polymarket of being the next Fed chair. Can you be a Fed chair and a treasury secretary at the same time?"

In comments highlighted by Mediaite, Bessent replied that he was content with his position in the president's Cabinet.

"Well, I think it hasn't been done since 1930-something and I'm very happy in my job here," he said. "I think we have lots of good candidates for Fed chair. We will start working on that in the fall. We've been busy. The president's been doing peace deals, trade deals, tax deals โ€” and we are landing the plane on all of those โ€” so we're going to have more bandwidth after Labor Day."

Eisen then noted that Bessent did not exactly close the door on shouldering another role.

"That was not a no โ€” I just want to point out โ€” on the double job," she said. "Very interesting."

Trump said Tuesday that he has two or three choices in mind to replace Powell. The current Fed chair, whose term ends in May, was nominated to lead the U.S. central bank by the president during his first term.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Trump is considering former Fed Gov. Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and Bessent as replacements. Former World Bank President David Malpass and Fed Gov. Christopher Waller are also candidates, according to the newspaper.

Trump has been critical of Powell since returning to the White House in January, slamming the Fed chair for his refusal to cut interest rates, which range from 4.25% to 4.50%.

Rep. Ogles: Add Trump to Mount Rushmore

A Republican lawmaker on Thursday proposed that President Donald Trump be added to Mount Rushmore.

Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., sent a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and took to social media to express his request shortly before the House passed the Senate version of the president's One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Ogles wrote: "Given the scale and scope of President Trump's recent achievements โ€” especially the impending enactment of the Big Beautiful Bill, the historic act that will ignite America's Golden Age โ€” it is essential that we immortalize President Trump's likeness on Mount Rushmore."

"Like Washington, Trump did not seek his position for glory but out of love for his country, championing American independence and reshaping the presidency with dynamism, clarity, and purpose," Ogles wrote on X.

"Like Jefferson, he expanded America's horizons by pursuing new frontiers and breaking away from deep state tyrants.

"Like Teddy Roosevelt, Trump took on entrenched interests, reinvigorated American industry, and avenged the working class against bureaucratic bloat and corporate corruption.

"The legacy of Mount Rushmore cannot remain frozen in stone; it must evolve to reflect the full arc of American history, including its most recent and transformative chapter."

Ogles' post included an image of the national memorial, with Trump's head added all the way on the right, next to Abraham Lincoln's.
