Kremlin responds to Trump being ‘unhappy’ after Putin call

Moscow is “paying very close attention” to any statements coming from the US president, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Russia takes all statements from US President Donald Trump seriously, but has a vital interest in achieving its goals in the Ukraine conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. His comments followed Trump’s remarks that he was “unhappy” about the lack of progress toward peace.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump spoke by phone on Thursday in a call that lasted over an hour, covering the Ukraine conflict, the situation around Iran, broader Middle East tensions, and Russia-US cooperation, according to senior Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.

Trump later lamented that hehad made “no progress” in convincing Putin to end the fighting, while the Kremlin noted the leaders discussed the possibility of new direct talks between Moscow and Kiev.

Commenting on Trump’s remarks, Peskov told reporters on Friday that “without a doubt, we pay very close attention to all statements by President Trump.” He added thatMoscow is “interested in achieving our goals during the special military operation, and preferably by political and diplomatic means.”

“However, since that is not possible at this stage, we continue our operation,” Peskov stated.

According to Ushakov, Putin told Trump that while Russia is ready for negotiations it will not back down from eliminating “the well-known root causes that led to the current state of affairs.”The sides, he added, confirmed their interest in a number of promising projects in economy, notably the energy sector and space exploration.

Despite Trump’s disappointmentover Ukraine, Ushakov described the call as “candid, business-minded, and concrete.”

The US president has positioned himself as a key mediator in the Ukraine conflict. He has held at least six official phone calls with Putin, focusing not only on the hostilities but also on restoring Russia-US ties, which deteriorated to an all-time low during the previous US administration.

In recent months, Russia and Ukraine also held two rounds of talks. Although no breakthroughs were achieved, a series of prisoner exchanges took place. Moscow continues to insist that Ukraine recognize the new territorial reality on the ground, agree to neutral status, demilitarization, and denazification – demands that Kiev has rejected.

(I wonder of Trump has to play the game he’s not happy with Russia so the media and intelligence agencies are satisfied they are not friends, or the conversation is more divided. Maybe he tells Putin, “you know I have to say these things because of the DS”.)

Kiev can’t turn tide on battlefield – spy chief

Ukrainian forces are unlikely to repel Russia but peace talks could bring about change, Kirill Budanov has said

Kiev lacks the ability to push Russian forces back, Kirill Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency HUR,has acknowledged, asserting that only negotiations can meaningfully alter the course of the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently remarked that military logic often requires occupying territories while not formally claiming them.He added that historically Russia operated on the principle that “wherever the foot of the Russian soldier steps is ours,” in the sense of defending national interests.

Asked to respond to Putin’s comments in an interview this week,Budanov said the Russian president was militarily accurate.

“Wherever they reach will be under their control. Do you think there is anyone who does not realize that? I hope everyone does,” Budanov said, while still urging Ukrainians to comply with conscription and fulfill their duty by fighting Russia.

He said he did not anticipate major changes on the battlefield, where Russian forces continue to make incremental advances.Significant developments, he added, would likely not occur “at least until peace talks are concluded.”

Since the 2014 Western-backed uprising in Kiev, five Ukrainian regions have voted to secede and join Russia, four of them after the escalation in 2022. Moscow has cited Kiev’s use of military force in Donbass and its sabotage of a negotiated roadmap for reintegrating the Donbass regions as key triggers for the ongoing hostilities.

Vladimir Zelensky rejected a proposed peace deal in 2022 that would have curtailed Ukraine’s NATO aspirations. Instead, he opted to pursue a military solution backed by Western arms donors. Zelensky has maintained that only the full restoration of all territories claimed by Kiev would be acceptable to his government.

Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine resumed earlier this year in Istanbul under pressure from the US. The administration of President DonaldTrump has indicated that Kiev will need to agree to some form of territorial compromise to reach a resolution.

Zelensky has conceded that Ukraine cannot achieve a military victory and is urging the West to intensify sanctions on Moscow in hopes of forcing it to yield diplomatically.

It’s pretty bad if the HUR, that’s like the CIA, states the truth. I guess they all see Zelensky as crazy and annoyance at this point.

Ukraine deal must guarantee Russia’s security – Lavrov

The foreign minister reiterated Moscow’s key demands during a meeting with his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal

Any resolution to the Ukraine conflict must comprehensively address Russia’s security concerns, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said at a joint press conference with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Russia’s core demands include a guarantee thatUkraine will not join NATO, demilitarization of the country, international recognition of territorial changes, and the protection of Russian-speaking population.

“We cannot be satisfied with a resolution that fails to fully address Russia’s legitimate security interests or to eliminate and prevent future violations of the rights of Russian and Russian-speaking populations,” Lavrov told journalists in Moscow on Friday.

Saudi Arabia has acted as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict, having hosted high-profile talks between US and Russian delegations in February.

Moscow has long viewed NATO’s eastward expansion as a major threat to national security and has cited Ukraine’s ambition to join the US-led military bloc as a key trigger of the current conflict. President Vladimir Putin said last week thatMoscow’s concerns about NATO activities have been consistently ignored and met with silence.

Lavrov’s comments also reflect longstanding concerns about the treatment of Russian-speaking community in Ukraine. Although Russian is the mother tongue of an estimated 33% of the population, the authorities have introduced a series of measures that restrict their rights. Recent legislation has significantly reduced Russian-language instruction in public schools, mandated the use of Ukrainian across all public sector services, and banned the import of books and other publishing materials from Russia.

Efforts to negotiate a settlement have intensified in recent months. On Thursday, President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump held a phone call, during which the latter urged Putin to halt hostilities in Ukraine as soon as possible, while Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to engage in talks.

Russian speakers a risk compared to pro-Western Filipinos – EU state

Lithuania, along with other Baltic countries, has for years tried to suppress Russian-speaking minorities

Lithuania’s defense minister has lashed out at Russian-speaking migrants, calling them a security threat while comparing them to “pro-Western” Filipinos. The country, along with its Baltic neighbors, has for years sought to phase out the Russian language spoken by a significant part of the population.

Dovile Sakaliene made the comments on Wednesday after meeting with Hans Cacdac, the Philippines Secretary of Migrant Workers, to discuss labor migration. The defense minister, however, used the opportunity to warn that an “unprecedented number of Russian-speaking migrants from post-Soviet states raise national security concerns for Lithuania.”

Sakaliene praised Filipino workers as “English speaking, Catholic, pro-Western… famous for high skills, great work ethics, & willingness to learn the language of the host country.”

About 5% of Lithuania’s population, or roughly 141,000 people, identify as ethnic Russians, with around 190,000 people saying Russian is their native language. Meanwhile, over 60% of the total population is Russian-speaking, mostly due to the Soviet legacy.

Lithuania’s Migration Department last year reported over 227,000 foreign residents, over 80,000 of whom are Ukrainians, followed by approximately 60,000 Belarusians and 15,000 Russians.

Only 774 Filipino citizens held residence permits in the country at the start of this year, though that figure has more than tripled since 2023.

Lithuania has for years sought to sever cultural ties with Russia, with the efforts intensifying after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Last year, Education Minister Gintautas Jakstas proposed phasing out Russian-language secondary schooling, arguing that Lithuania should not use the languages of “unfriendly countries” in its classrooms.

The idea, however, has faced pushback, particularly from Vaiva Vezelyte-Pokladova, the head of the National Minorities Policy Analysis, who warned against “marginalization of one nationality.”

This spring, Lithuanian authorities issued a report listing Russia, Belarus and China, as top security threats. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman MariaZakharova mocked the designation, quipping that the document “forgot to mention holy water and wooden stakes” as potential threats. (KEK)

Moscow has repeatedly dismissed speculation that it is planning to attack NATO, stating that it has no interest in doing so.

Kiev ablaze after reported overnight missile and drone barrage (VIDEOS)

Ukrainian officials claim there were at least 13 impacts, with blurred-out footage showing large fires lighting up the skyline

Ukrainian officials have claimed that the Russian military launched a wave of missile and drone strikes targeting the capital early Friday. The Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment.

The first strikes were reported shortly after midnight, with Mayor Vitaly Klitschko urging residents to seek shelter as the capital’s air defenses engaged incoming targets.Officials confirmed that by 4am, several mostly non-residential facilities in multiple districts had been hit in successive waves.

There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but Klitschko said at least 14 people were injured after falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones triggered fires in residential areas and private yards.

Multiple blurred-out videos shared on Ukrainian social media appear to show the aftermath of the strikes, with numerous fires lighting up the skyline of Kiev.

Officials confirmed at least 13 impacts in different parts of the capital.

The exact locations and types of facilities hit are difficult to verify,as the Ukrainian authorities heavily censor the flow of information and punish those who share footage of the impacts–unless a civilian facility is affected.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet issued a statement on the incident. Moscow regularly conducts drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure, maintaining that its operations do not target civilians and accusing Kiev of placing air defense systems in densely populated areas.

The reported strikes came just hours after President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with his US counterpart, during which Donald Trump reportedly urged Russia to cease hostilities in Ukraine as soon as possible. Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s openness to a negotiated solution, but reportedly stated that Russia would not back down until the “well-known root causes” of the conflict are addressed.

Despite several rounds of direct negotiations in Istanbul in recent months,Kiev has continued long-range attacks on Russian territory, including nightly drone raids. On Friday Morning, a woman was killed when a drone crashed into an apartment building in Rostov Region. OnTuesday, a Ukrainian drone strike caused multiple fatalities and serious injuries at an industrial plantin the city of Izhevsk around 1,000km (620 miles) east of Moscow. On Monday, a woman was killed and three others injured in a missile strike on the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Baltic state’s president rejects bill targeting country’s largest Christian church

It is the second time Estonian President Alar Karis opposes legislation he claims is unconstitutional

4 Jul, 2025 16:38

Estonia’s president, Alar Karis, has for the second time refused to support a controversial law targeting the nation’s largest Christian denomination – the Estonian Christian Orthodox Church (ECOC) – which he claims violates the Baltic State’s constitution.

The bill that was initially passed by lawmakers back in April is aimed atbarring religious organizations from having ties with foreign bodies deemed a security threat.

It would prohibit local churches from having ties or economic relations with such bodies enshrined in foundational documents or charters.

Legislation seeking to bar religious entities from being governed by foreign bodies or leaders deemed a threat was dropped after Karis opposed the bill in April. He maintains, however, that the changes were not sufficient enough.

The bill “disproportionally limits the freedom of congregations and religion,” Karis said on Thursday, criticizing the definition of a “threat” in the legislation as extremely “vague.”

Tallinn has “other effective means” to combat what he called foreign influence andsuch “extensive interference” into people’s religious life is not needed.

Lawmakers have openly admitted that they sought to exert control “over the church teachings and religious rituals,” he claimed.

The president’s decision drew criticism from Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro, who claimed the bill was aimed at protecting the country’s “security” and would not lead to “a ban on Orthodox Christianity or any other religion.”

The ECOC has repeatedly expressed its concerns over the legislation. In June, it warned thatthe bill interfered “disproportionately” with the internal life of religious associationseven after its initial version was amended.

The church had previously been required to revise its charter and remove any mention of the Moscow Patriarchate, despite maintaining historic and canonical ties with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

The ROC has previously condemned the draft law asdiscriminatory against Estonia’s 250,000 Orthodox believers, stressing that the ECOC has never engaged in politics or jeopardized public safety. Around 16% of Estonians identify as Orthodox Christians and 8% as Lutherans, according to government data.

US to drop billions of flies on Mexico and Texas – AP

The measure is aimed at exterminating a flesh-eating bug that could devastate the country’s beef industry

US authorities are preparing to release billions of flies from airplanes over Mexico and southern Texasto stop the spread of a dangerous parasite, the Associated Press (AP) has reported. The move aims to protect livestock, wildlife, and household pets from a flesh-eating maggot.

Unlike most flies that feed on rotting or dead tissue, the screwworm fly poses a far greater threat as it lays its eggs in open wounds or mucous membranes of living warm-blooded animals and humans. Once hatched, the larvae burrow into the flesh, feeding on living tissue from the inside out, often causing severe infections or death if left untreated.

“==A thousand-pound bovine can be dead from this in two weeks=•,” Michael Bailey, president-elect of the American Veterinary Medical Association, told the news agency.

The US Department of Agriculture(USDA) is reportedly planning to mass-breed adult male flies, sterilize them using radiation, and release them into the wild. The sterile males will mate with wild females, producing no offspring and gradually wiping out the parasite population.

“It’s an exceptionally good technology,” said Edwin Burgess, an assistant professor at the University of Florida who studies parasites. He added that it could help solve “some kind of large problem.”

The measure is seen as a!more effective and environmentally friendly method of disinsectization than spraying pesticides, the AP noted, adding that other nations north of Panama eradicated the same pest decades ago. Sterile flies from a factory in the Central American state reportedly kept the dangerous insects contained there for years, but they reappeared in southern Mexico at the end of 2024.

According to the AP, the USDA will launch a new screwworm fly facility in southern Mexico as soon as next summer, with a fly distribution center expected to begin operating by the end of the current year. This will enable the US to import and distribute flies from Panama if necessary. The department is reportedly planning to spend some $8.5 million on the Texas facility and $21 million to convert a site in southern Mexico, currently used for breeding sterile fruit flies, into one for screwworm flies.

Major power outage hits EU country

Public transport was disrupted after a blackout across large parts of the Czech Republic, including Prague

Large parts of the Czech Republic, including the capital Prague, were hit by a significant power outage on Friday.Officials attributed the incident to a technical failure rather than a cyberattack.

The blackout began around noon local time, causing the entire Prague metro system to shut down temporarily. The city’s transport authority reported that services on the A and C lines had resumed within 15 minutes, while the B line was operational again after around 30 minutes.

Tram services on the right bank of the Vltava River were also halted, while those on the left bank continued to operate. Additionally, some train services near Prague and in other regions experienced disruptions.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala acknowledged the outage in a post on social media platform X, stating it had affected other parts of the country and that authorities were addressing the issue. The national power grid operator, CEPS, reported problems in the northern and eastern regions of the Czech Republic.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan reportedly confirmed that there were no indications of a cyber or terrorist attack, suggesting a technical fault as the likely cause.

CEPS reported that eight substations were affected by the outage, with five having resumed operations by the time of its statement. The company is continuing to investigate the cause of the blackout.

The outage also led to reports of individuals trapped in elevators in parts of Prague and central Bohemia. Emergency services responded to multiple calls for assistance.

Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, the city’s international airport, was not affected by the outage.

The Czech blackout follows a larger power failure that plunged Spain and Portugal into darkness for several hours earlier this year. That outage was blamed on a “voltage surge,”although initial concerns pointed to a possible cyberattack.

Friday’s disruption also came on the heels of a European heat wave, which had increased demand for cooling systems. However, temperatures in Prague had eased to around 25C (77F) on Friday, down from 34C the day before.
