Disney created a special effect in the 90's that left a smoke ring like this in the air when it went off.

A "cannon" shot a ball of air across the room and could hit a person standing 100 ft away with no harmful affects. When the cannon "shot" it left a smoke ring just like these pictures. There was a time delay of a few seconds before the "guest" felt the airball hit them, kind of like a water balloon.
