Servicemen arrested in Canada over ‘terrorist’ plot

Members of a would-be “anti-government militia” had been amassing arms to seize land in Quebec City, police have said

Canadian police have detained two active servicemen and two other individuals with links to the country’s military as part of an anti-terrorism case. The suspects allegedly sought to establish an “anti-government militia” and were in possession of a sizable arsenal of weapons.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the arrest of four men, “including active members of the Canadian Armed Forces,” who are suspected of having plotted to “forcibly take possession of land in the Quebec City area.”

In a separate statement cited by the media, the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that two of the suspects were active-duty corporals, another one was a former member of the military, and the fourth man previously served as a civilian instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

According to the authorities, the group “took concrete actions to facilitate terrorist activity,” and participated in “military-style training.” During raids on the suspects’ homes in January 2024, arms caches were uncovered, containing a total of 83 firearms, including those prohibited under Canadian law, as well as ammunition, 16 explosive devices, and tactical equipment.

According to media reports, citing the police, the investigation was originally launched in 2023, with the cell having supposedly been active since 2021.

The authorities stated that the suspects used a private Instagram group to recruit people to join an anti-government uprising.

The RCMP’s Erique Gasse characterized the case as “ideologically motivated violent extremism,” as quoted by the Associated Press.

As a Francophone region in predominantly English-speaking Canada, Quebec has a decades-long history of separatist and secessionist movements, with some groups having resorted to violence in the past, particularly in the 1960s and early 1970s.

In May, authorities in Germany banned an extremist group known as the “Kingdom of Germany” and arrested four of its top members, including the group’s self-declared “king,” Peter Fitzek.

The group had allegedly established a “counter-state,” operated unlicensed banking services and set up its own parallel legal system.

The “kingdom” was believed to be affiliated with the so-called Reichsburger (Reich Citizens) movement – a far-right conspiracy-driven network that denies the legitimacy of the modern German state.

In December 2022, German police detained two dozen suspects linked to a supposed “Reich Citizens” plot to overthrow the German government and restore the monarchy.

The suspects, including former military, police, and commando personnel, had been amassing weapons and trying to recruit supporters in the police and the military, according to the authorities.

Patriot Missile Stockpile A Fraction Of What Pentagon Needs As Trump Arms Ukraine

The ongoing wars in the Middle East and Ukraine have depleted US stockpiles of missile interceptors. The Pentagon has just a quarter of the Patriot missiles it needs.

According to the Guardian, “The United States only has about 25% of the Patriot missile interceptors it needs for all of the Pentagon’s military plans after burning through stockpiles in the Middle East in recent months, an alarming depletion that led to the Trump administration freezing the latest transfer of munitions to Ukraine.”

US weapons manufacturers can only produce approximately 500 Patriot missiles per year. The US used dozens of interceptors to defend Israel from Iranian retaliatory attacks last month. Additionally, the Pentagon engaged in its largest Patriot battle in history to repel a symbolic Iranian missile attack on the US airbase in Qatar.

The US stockpile of air and missile defenses has been drained to aid Ukraine during the war with Russia. Missile interceptors are in short supply in the West. In May, Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio told Congress that “The Ukrainians asked for air defense systems – Patriot systems, which, frankly, we don’t have.”

It is unclear if Trump reversed the Pentagon order to halt some arms transfers to Ukraine, including Patriot Missiles. During Monday’s dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump told reporters that he would “send some more weapons” to Ukraine.

Patriot systems have been a crucial part of Ukraine’s air defenses. However, Russia has developed missiles to counter Patriot interceptors with increasing effectiveness.

“When you have a prominent candidate who is giving permission to use dangerous rhetoric that potentially incites violence and incites people and creates a permission structure to fan the flames of violence? That’s just completely unacceptable,” Wasserman Schultz said.

Fellow Jewish Democrat lawmaker Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) reportedly surmised that Mamdani is “either ignoring or gaslighting the public” when he said the phrase “globalize the intifada” is “a peaceful call.”

“I think he’s wrong on all those things,” Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) echoed of Mamdani. “If he can’t tell people ‘globalizing the intifada’ — if he can’t say that that’s antisemitic, then obviously he’s going to continue to add to the problem, not deflate it.”

Mamdani, a Muslim who was born in Uganda, faced backlash in New York City last month when he appeared on The Bulwark’s podcast, where he refused to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which is widely seen as advocating for violence against Israel.

After that, the 33-year-old Mayoral candidate appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he again refused to condemn the phrase after host Kristen Welker asked him about it three times.

Mamdani can’t even bring himself to say that Israel is a Jewish state.

A trainee surgeon at a Melbourne hospital has been arrested after a disturbing discovery was made inside a staff toilet.

The 27-year-old’s Heidelberg West home was raided this morning, after a phone was allegedly found in a staff toilet at the hospital in Melbourne’s north on July 3.

“Mernda Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) investigators have arrested a man following an incident at a medical facility in Heidelberg,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“It is alleged a recording device in the form of a mobile phone was located in a restricted staff toilet of a medical facility in Heidelberg on July 3.

“The device is believed to have been in place for some time before staff became aware and reported the matter to police.

Netanyahu insists Trump’s strategy for agreement doesn’t involve pressuring Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that he and US President Donald Trump were in lock-step with their efforts to secure a hostage deal.

In a seeming attempt to project unity with the United States amid the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, the premier insisted that both he and Trump would not agree to a deal “at any price,” as the American president again suggested that a deal was close to being finalized.

“President Trump and I have a common goal. I want to achieve the release of our hostages. We want to end Hamas rule in Gaza. We want to make sure that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel anymore,” Netanyahu told reporters at the US Capitol in Washington before meeting with Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Netanyahu insisted he and Trump have the same strategy for securing a deal, which does not involve US pressure on Israel.

“President Trump wants a deal, but not at any price. I want a deal, but not at any price. Israel has security requirements and other requirements, and we’re working together to try to achieve it,” Netanyahu said, dismissing reports to the contrary.

Trump, meanwhile, once again asserted that there was a “very good chance that we’ll have a [Gaza hostage] deal of some kind this week and maybe next week.”

“I think we have a chance this week or next week — not definitely. There’s nothing definite about war and Gaza,” he said on Wednesday.

Trump said last week that he believed a deal would be reached this week. The week before that, Trump said a deal would likely be reached within a week.

Hamas claims ‘flexibility’ in hostage talks

As the negotiations continued, Hamas put out a statement claiming that it has evinced “flexibility” and agreed to release 10 hostages as part of the deal.

However, the terror group noted that other issues were still under negotiation, including the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, the withdrawal of IDF forces from the territory and real guarantees for a permanent ceasefire.

Hamas claimed in its statement that despite the challenges in the talks, it continues to act “seriously and in a positive spirit with the mediators in order to overcome the obstacles.”

The statement marked an unusual declaration from Hamas during the negotiations with Israel, but did not appear to indicate any progress.

The outline currently being discussed in the talks in Doha, based on a proposal by US special Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff, would see the release of 10 living Israeli hostages held in Gaza and the return of the bodies of 18 deceased hostages, in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire.

Witkoff told reporters Tuesday that he was hopeful a deal could be reached this week, claiming that three of the four sticking points between the two parties had been resolved in proximity talks in Doha.
