Dementia warning as drug taken by millions raises risk of memory robbing disorder by up to 40%, study finds

A commonly taken drug for lower back pain could raise the risk of developing dementia by up to 40 per cent, concerning research suggests.

Gabapentin, sold as Neurontin, was approved on the NHS in the early 1990s to treat nerve pain and epilepsy.

But US researchers have found the pill—typically taken three times a day—could increase the risk of developing the memory robbing disorder by 29 per cent among patients of any age who had been prescribed it at least six times.

This risk rose to 40 per cent among those who had been prescribed it on more than 12 occasions.

The team, from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, said the findings suggested patients prescribed gabapentin should now be assessed for potential cognitive decline.

But they cautioned the findings do not prove that taking the drug will cause dementia—merely that it shows an association.

Experts today also suggested that people with chronic pain requiring gabapentin may simply have also been less physically active, a known risk factor for developing dementia, so the medication may be not be to blame.

The drug—manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer of Covid vaccine fame—acts on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical messenger in the brain that functions like a brake on over-excited nerve cells.

New details about Trump's 'secret' meeting with Kevin Rudd revealed - as the President's tariff deadline approaches

Ex-PM 'hasn't helped' relations with US

New details have surfaced about a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Australia’s ambassador to the US Kevin Rudd.

The pair had a private meeting at the start of the year, and little is known about what was discussed. However, answers to questions by opposition finance spokesman James Paterson during Senate estimates provided some details.

'Ambassador Rudd met President Trump in the dining room of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on January 11, 2025,' the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in response to a query about the pair's meeting.

It also revealed that a diplomatic cable, a confidential exchange, said: 'Ambassador Rudd has professional relationships with and has met with a range of senior administration officials.'

Other than that, nothing official about the meeting had been released.

The news comes as the Albanese government faces criticism over its relationship with President Trump, who announced a delay to the implementation of damaging levies on US imports, while targeting copper and pharmaceuticals with new tariffs.

Concerns have been raised about whether Mr Rudd is the right person to engage with Trump, given his past remarks about the president.

In 2021, Mr Rudd referred to Trump as a 'village idiot,' a 'traitor to the West,' and 'the most destructive president in history.'

But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government has been 'constructively' engaging with the Trump administration and any arrangements would be in Australia's national interest.

'I've made it very clear that the issues such as the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, the Media Bargaining Code and our bio laws to protect our agricultural interest are not on the table for negotiations,' Albanese said.

'They're a part of who Australia is.'

Kevin Hogan, the Coalition's shadow trade minister, was critical of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for failing to secure an in-person meeting with Trump - like his UK Labour counterpart Keir Starmer - to secure less punitive tariffs.

'Obviously, at the moment, it doesn't appear to be a personal relationship at all which is disappointing,' he said.

'We don't agree with Trump on a number of issues and that's okay to disagree with friends and allies.

'There's a real question mark that has to be asked over the Prime Minister and his unwillingness or inability to get a one-on-one meeting with the US President.'

Starmer did a deal to get steel and aluminium tariffs reduced from 50 per cent to 25 per cent but is hoping for zero.

Directed Energy is being weaponized. Individuals’ brains can be targeted by microwaves

DARPA Neurologist and Chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program at Georgetown University, Washington DC, Dr. James Giordano, who is also a weapons expert, started his presentation at West Point NY Military Academy by saying, “The brain is and will be the 21st Century battlefield. End of story.”

About Geoengineering

On this page:

What is Geoengineering?

Potential Impacts

What is Geoengineering?

Geoengineering encompasses a broad range of activities, including those that intentionally attempt to cool the Earth or remove certain gases from the atmosphere. Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are often referred to as greenhouse gases, which include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. For example, geoengineering includes the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (also called Carbon Dioxide Removal – CDR) through methods such as direct air capture and storage, ocean iron fertilization, or ocean alkalinity enhancement.

A subset of geoengineering activities intends to cool the Earth by intentionally modifying the amount of sunlight reaching Earth’s surface. These activities are referred to as Solar Geoengineering or Solar Radiation Modification (SRM). Most proposed solar radiation modification techniques involve adding material to the atmosphere to increase the amount of incoming sunlight reflected back to space. While some of these approaches are currently being studied, not enough information exists to fully understand the viability, risks, and benefits of each approach.

Types of solar geoengineering techniques include:

Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) – adding small reflective particles to the upper atmosphere (stratosphere) to reflect incoming sunlight. Sulfur dioxide (SO2), one of the types of chemicals considered for SAI, can chemically react in the stratosphere to form reflective sulfate aerosols.

Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) – adding particles, such as sea spray, to the lower atmosphere (near the surface) to increase the reflectivity of clouds over the ocean.

Other techniques, such as Cirrus Cloud Thinning (CCT) or space-based methods have been far less researched due to uncertainty in the processes, high potential costs, and more limited feasibility.

Potential Impacts

The purpose of solar geoengineering is to cool the Earth by reflecting more sunlight back to space. Depending on the approach used, there could be additional unintended health and environmental consequences that require careful evaluation. Current understanding of risks and benefits is limited by uncertainties in the observations and modeling tools used to examine solar geoengineering impacts. There isn’t enough information available to fully understand the unintended consequences of solar geoengineering.

Potential health and environmental impacts of solar geoengineering include:

Ozone – adding particles to the stratosphere could lead to stratospheric ozone layer depletion; however, lower temperatures from reduced sunlight may also reduce ozone at ground-level and its negative health impacts.

Ecosystem health and crop yields – adding sulfur to the atmosphere increases the risk of acid rain, deposition of sulfur to the surface, and worsened soil acidity, which could impact food production. Decreased sunlight (i.e., energy) reaching the surface could also impact ecosystem and agricultural productivity.

Rain and snowfall patterns – adding particles to the stratosphere can alter hydrological cycles, leading to changes in the amount of rainfall and drought in specific regions.

Respiratory health – some particles in the stratosphere eventually come down to Earth’s surface where they can contribute to adverse health impacts, including making it difficult to breathe.
