Paris to be new headquarters of 'coalition of the willing' for Ukraine

Britain said on Thursday that Paris would be the new headquarters for the so-called 'coalition of the willing' to support Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, with plans underway for a future coordination cell in Kyiv.

Following a three-day state visit in Britain for French President Emmanuel Macron, Britain said preparation for a ceasefire in Ukraine should "continue on an enduring, business as usual footing, to ensure that a force can deploy in the days following the cessation of hostilities".

As part of that the two leaders held virtual talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, other international leaders and U.S. representatives including Special Presidential Envoy, General Keith Kellogg, Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Richard Blumenthal.

They agreed the headquarters would be in Paris and led by Britain and France to oversee all tactical and operational arrangements. The HQ will then rotate to London after the first 12 months.

Looks like the Russians are not impressed with Trump’s fickle behavior and will continue to pulverize the Ukrainians. Although Trump’s decision to send Ukraine some more weapons for defense was interpreted as something that will happen quickly, Sean Parnell, the spokesman for DOD Secretary Hegseth:

insists that the process to “evaluate military shipments across the globe remains in effect and is integral to our America First defence priorities”. This implies that some weapons could still be held back from Ukraine.

What Trump does not understand is that the ability of the US to supply a variety of weapon systems — both offensive and defensive — is constrained by a lack of supplies and a weak industrial capability to ramp up production. Let’s take a look at some of the systems:

PATRIOT MISSILES:

Start with the understanding that at least two Patriot missiles are fired at an inbound missile. During the last three days, Russia has launched more than 1300 missiles and drones at Ukraine. The annual US production of Patriot missiles—specifically the PAC-3 MSE variant—is currently about 500 missiles per year. Production is contractually obligated to increase to 550 per year by mid-2025 and is expected to reach 650 per year by mid-2027.

When including both PAC-2 and PAC-3 variants (produced by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon), the total US production is projected at around 740 Patriot missiles per year in 2025, with plans to ramp up to approximately 1,100 per year by 2027. In other words, if Ukraine tried to shoot down each of the 1300 missiles and drones launched this week by Russia, that volley would have consumed more than three years of current Patriot production.

At what cost? The cost of a Patriot missile depends on the variant:

US threatens ICC: Drop Israel war crimes probe or 'all options on the table'

A senior legal adviser to the US State Department has issued a dramatic threat to the International Criminal Court's oversight body, warning that "all options are on the table" if the court does not drop investigations and arrest warrants against the US and Israel.

Reed Rubinstein made the threat on Tuesday during a meeting of the Assembly of State Parties (ASP), the ICC's oversight body, in New York.

"We will use all appropriate and effective diplomatic, political and legal instruments to block ICC overreach," the US representative warned.

A US shipment of Caterpillar D9 bulldozers arrived in the Israeli port of Haifa on Wednesday as Israel is conducting a record number of demolitions of Palestinian homes and structures in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza.

According to Israeli media, the shipment of bulldozers was reportedly paused by the Biden administration last year due to their widespread use in destroying Gaza.

“The shipment of D9 bulldozers is part of a broad-scale arming and military equipment effort worth billions of shekels, which the US government released and the Defense Ministry procured and transported to Israel,” Amir Baram, the head of Israel’s Defense Ministry, said.

“We must continue to strengthen our military buildup to support all of the IDF’s needs in the current campaign and in preparation for the next decade,” Baram added.

The destruction of homes in Gaza is a key part of Israel’s campaign. A recent report from Haaretz that revealed IDF troops are being ordered to fire on unarmed Palestinians near aid sites also revealed that private contractors are being paid $1,500 for each house they destroy in the Strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told a Knesset committee in May that the IDF was ramping up its demolitions of homes in Gaza so Palestinians had nowhere to return. “We are destroying more and more homes, and Gazans have nowhere to return to. The only inevitable outcome will be the wish of Gazans to emigrate outside of the Gaza Strip,” he said.

Netanyahu and other Israeli officials have made clear that their goal is the destruction and ethnic cleansing of Gaza, and they’re now openly working on a plan to build a concentration camp on the ruins of the southern city of Rafah for the entire civilian population.

In the West Bank, Israel has increased demolitions across the Palestinian territory, including in the northern refugee camps of Jenin, Nur Shams, and Tulkarem, where 40,000 people have been displaced since January.

Satellite Images Reveal Iranian Missiles Did Hit Key U.S. Air Base In Qatar

The June 23 Iranian missile attack on the United States Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar likely hit a geodesic dome housing secure communications equipment, satellite images published on July 10 revealed.

The attack, which saw Iran firing some 14 short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles at Al Udeid, was carried out in response to the U.S. attack on the Iranian nuclear sites of Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow that took place a day earlier. The exchange marked the end of Israel’s 12-day war on the Islamic Republic.

U.S. President Donald Trump described the attack as a “very weak response.” He said that 13 of the missiles launched by Iran were successfully intercepted and one was “set free” as it was going in a “non threatening” direction.

“I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured,” he wrote on his website Truth Social.

Interestingly, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said at the time that the base’s communications had been disconnected.

“All equipment of the base was completely destroyed and now the U.S. command stream and connection from Al Udeid base to its other military bases have been completely cut,” said Ahmad Alamolhoda, a hard-line cleric.

Satellite images from Planet Labs PBC analyst by the Associated Press show the geodesic dome visible at Al Udeid on the morning of June 23, just hours before the attack. The U.S. Air Force’s 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, which operates out of the base, in 2016 announced the installation of the $15 million piece of equipment, known as a modernized enterprise terminal.

Images taken June 25 and every day subsequently show the dome is gone, with some damage visible on a nearby building.

The London-based satellite news channel Iran International also reported the damage, citing satellite images taken by a different provider.

Senate Committee Votes To Block FBI Headquarters Relocation

The July 10 vote approved a Justice Department funding bill amendment that blocked the Trump administration from keeping the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., through a change in destination for the bureau.

The Republican majority committee voted 15-14 to adopt language that would halt a move from the J. Edgar Hoover Building site to any location that isn’t the previously approved site in Greenbelt, Maryland, that was chosen by the General Services Administration in 2023.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) crossed party lines to join Democrats in supporting halting the administration’s proposed move.

“My understanding is that this has been a decision that was made just very recently,” Murkowski said ahead of the vote. “So I, for one, would like to know that this analysis has actually been going on for more than just a couple [of] months, that there’s actually been that effort to ensure that we’re going to move forward.”

The amendment to block the move was introduced by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who said the previous decision to move the FBI to Maryland was made as a result of a lengthy process that involved Congressional criteria and lengthy discourse.

According to the lawmaker, the Trump administration did not perform adequate research and analysis before choosing to repurpose the Ronald Reagan building for the FBI headquarters.

“A few weeks ago, the administration just announced that it wanted to snatch the $555 million that had been set aside for down payment on that selected site and use it instead to move the FBI into the Ronald Reagan Building,” Van Hollen said during the markup session.

“No analysis done with respect to security requirements, no analysis done with respect to FBI mission requirements, no review of the underlying statute as to the purpose of the Ronald Reagan Building, no analysis of what they would do with current tenants in that building.”

According to Van Hollen, allowing the change to happen sets a dangerous precedent that cedes power designated to the legislative branch and allows the executive branch to overstep.

Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) contradicted that argument, saying that Congress is “micromanaging the FBI.”

“We have to trust the experts as we put them in place,” Mullin said before the vote on the amendment, referencing those in authority at the agency.

“To make the assumption that the FBI would possibly put their men and women in a less secure building is laughable.”

The lawmaker rebutted the idea that Congress would know better than the FBI what the agency’s security decisions for a location should be.

“They know security, I promise you, better than all of us. This is what they fight, they fight threats … for us to try to micromanage their site planning is ridiculous,” Mullin said.

Advocates of higher military spending often say its to 'support the troops.' Not exactly.

Advocates of ever-higher Pentagon spending frequently argue that we must throw more money at the department to “support the troops.” But recent budget proposals and a new research paper issued by the Quincy Institute and the Costs of War Project at Brown University suggest otherwise.

The paper, which I co-authored with Stephen Semler, found that 54% of the Pentagon’s $4.4 trillion in discretionary spending from 2020 to 2024 went to military contractors. The top five alone — Lockheed Martin ($313 billion), RTX (formerly Raytheon, $145 billion), Boeing ($115 billion), General Dynamics ($116 billion), and Northrop Grumman ($81 billion) – received $771 billion in Pentagon contracts over that five year period.

This huge infusion of funds to arms makers comes at the expense of benefits for active duty personnel and veterans of America’s post-9/11 wars. Despite pay increases in recent years, there are still hundreds of thousands of military families who rely on food stamps, live in subpar housing, or suffer from other financial hardships.

Meanwhile, there are plans to cut tens of thousands of personnel at the Veterans Administration, close Veterans health centers, and even to reduce staffing at veteran suicide hotlines. And many of the programs veterans and their families depend on — from food stamps to Medicaid and more — are slated for sharp cuts in the budget bill signed by President Trump earlier this month.

It would be one thing if all of the hundreds of billions of dollars lavished on weapons contractors were being well spent in service of a better defense. But they are not. Overpriced and underperforming weapons systems like the F-35 combat aircraft and the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) have shown themselves to be quite effective at consuming taxpayer dollars, even as the run huge cost overruns, suffer lengthy schedule delays, and, in the case of the F-35, are unavailable for use much of the time due to serious maintenance problems.

The problems with the Sentinel and the F-35 are likely to pale in comparison with the sums that may be wasted in pursuit of President Trump’s proposal for a leak-proof “Golden Dome” missile defense system, a costly pipe dream that many experts feel is both physically impossible and strategically unwise. In the more than four decades and hundreds of billions of dollars spent since Ronald Reagan’s pledge to build an impenetrable shield against incoming ICBMs, the Pentagon has yet to succeed in a test conducted under realistic conditions, and has even failed in a large number of the carefully scripted efforts.

And Golden Dome is more ambitious than Star Wars — it is supposed to intercept not just ICBMs, but hypersonic missiles, low-flying drones, and anything else that might be launched at the United States.

The good news is that if you are a weapons contractor, whether from the Big Five or the emerging military tech sector in Silicon Valley, Golden Dome will be a gold mine, regardless of whether it ever produces a useful defense system.

A once-respected banking executive has been arrested at Sydney airport and accused of trying to have sex with teenage girls in his hotel room.

Christopher James McCann, 50, was charged on Tuesday with one count of using electronic communication to procure a child under 16 for a sexual act.

McCann, who worked at a Commonwealth Bank in Sydney, allegedly tried to find two teenage girls for sex in a Brisbane hotel, News.com.au reported.

Prosecutors will allege McCann had sought the help of an 18-year-old sex worker he met while in the city in May.

The group allegedly met in McCann's hotel before a concerned worker alerted police after becoming suspicious.

Following a two-month joint investigation, a warrant for his arrest was granted by a Queensland Court and McCann was promptly arrested at Sydney Airport.

The banking executive was then extradited to Brisbane on July 9 before his case was mentioned at Brisbane Arrest Court on Friday.

His defence attorney, Evan O’Hanlon-Rose, attempted to secure bail for McCann but this motion was delayed after a second person was accused of the same crime.

Shauntelle Went was charged with the same offence and now stands as McCann's co-accused.

A former Jacksonville dance instructor is behind bars after allegedly having sexual relations with a teenager.

34-year-old Samuel Penalba, formerly employed at A Social Affair Dance Studio, was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on July 7 and charged with five counts of unlawful sexual activity with a child and possession of child pornography.

According to JSO, their Special Assault Unit began its investigation on July 1 after receiving a complaint.

Police have arrested three Massachusetts men accused of seeking out sexual contact with minors.

The arrests stemmed from an undercover investigation targeting suspects looking to engage in commercial sexual activity, according to police.

Police said the men each agreed separately to meet a minor in Somerset Wednesday for sexual purposes and were taken into custody.

Fabio Gomes, 38, and John Kelley, 78, both of Taunton, as well as Gilbert Travassos, 54, of Fall River, have been charged with paying for sexual conduct with a child under the age of 18, enticing a child under the age of 16 and attempting to commit a crime.
