NEW DETAILS ON LAURA’S CRASH

A newly released accident report says Laura Bush, the wife of Texas Gov. George W. Bush, ran a stop sign in the 1963 car crash that killed her high-school sweetheart.
Officials in Midland, Texas, released the police report to The Associated Press yesterday after a freedom-of-information request was submitted in March.
An abbreviated version of the report previously made public concluded that either driver could have been at fault, but the full details were withheld.
The full report reveals that then-17-year-old Laura Welch drove her Chevrolet sedan into an intersection and struck a Corvair sedan driven by her boyfriend, Michael Douglas, also 17.
Douglas was thrown from the car and suffered a fatal broken neck. Laura and her passenger, Judy Dykes, were treated for minor injuries, according to press accounts of the accident at the time.
The police report said the weather was clear the night of the accident, Nov. 6. It said neither driver was drinking. The speed of Laura’s car was illegible on the report.
“As far as we know, no charges were filed,” Midland City Attorney Keith Stretcher said. “I don’t think it’s unusual that charges weren’t filed.”
