What is going on here?

It all confirms what Tuft University law professor Michael Glennon sets forth in his book National Security and Double Government. The ones who are in charge are the Pentagon, the CIA, and the NSA — i.e., the national-security establishment, or what people are now calling the “deep state.” The national-security branch of the federal government permits the other three branches to maintain the veneer of being in control but it’s only a veneer. When it comes to critical points of policy, like the continued existence of NATO, the other three branches, including the executive branch, are expected to defer to the national-security branch, and they do.

Consider NATO, the organization that the U.S. deep state brought into existence to fight it’s Cold War against the U.S. government’s World War II partner and ally, the Soviet Union. From the very beginning, its Cold War mission was to protect Europe from a Soviet invasion.

But the Cold War ended more than 25 years ago. So, why did this Cold War dinosaur remain in existence? It remained in existence because the U.S. deep state decreed that it would remain in existence.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban doubled down on his criticism of the European Union’s handling of immigration in an annual speech Saturday, predicting a shift toward illiberal “Christian democracy” in the 2019 European Parliament.

Orban, a member of the conservative nationalist and populist Fidesz party, has been a vocal leader among other EU nations who are similarly rejecting the EU’s attempts to be more lenient on migration and asylum seekers specifically.

“Their big goal to transform Europe, to ship it into a post-Christian era, and into an era when nations disappear – this process could be undermined in the European elections. And it is our elementary interest to stop this transformation,” Orban said on Saturday in a speech to ethnic Hungarians in Romania, Reuters reported.

He slammed what he calls the Western political “elite” and accused them of failing to protect Europe from mass Muslim immigration, which he predicts will cause a shift in EU leadership in 2019.

Trident D5?

Launching a missile from a submarine isn't as easy as pressing a big red button. It takes a lot of engineering and rocket science to ensure a missile gets from an underwater launch tube to streaking through low-Earth orbit at more than 13,000 mph—and sometimes, that delicate dance of physics can go wrong.

As these missiles increase in lethality, like today's Trident II D-5 missile, so do emotions surrounding the ethics of using such a weapon in the first place. But knowing Trident's future, and the future of other nuclear missiles, requires a trip to the past and an exploration of how you even launch a missile from under the sea. Here's how a missile makes it way through the water, into the air, and on its way to a target.

A serious malfunction in Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons deterrent was covered up by Downing Street just weeks before the crucial House of Commons vote on the future of the missile system.

The Sunday Times can reveal that a Trident II D5 missile — which can kill millions when armed with nuclear warheads — experienced an alarming failure after being launched from a British submarine off the coast of Florida in June last year.

Did the UK authorize and fire the missile?

The Sunday Times says the test fire was launched from HMS Vengeance off the coast of Florida.

It says the Trident II D5 missile was intended to be fired 5,600 miles (9,012 km) to a sea target off the west coast of Africa but veered towards the US.

The cause remains top secret, the paper adds, but quotes a senior naval source as saying the missile suffered an in-flight malfunction after launching out of the water.

HMS Vengeance, one of the UK's four Vanguard-class submarines, returned to sea for trials in December 2015 after a ÂŁ350m refit, which included the installation of new missile launch equipment and upgraded computer systems.
