Macmillan was known for educational publishing, including textbooks, as well as trade books and reference materials. Maxwell also formed a joint venture with McGraw-Hill in 1989, creating Macmillan/McGraw-Hill School Publishing Co., the second-largest textbook publisher in the U.S. at the time.
