Longtime Epstein associate gave $250K to RGA
Retail magnate Leslie Wexner stepped down from L Brands in 2020 after his ties to Jeffrey Epstein drew scrutiny.
Victoria’s Secret former owner Leslie Wexner, who stepped down as chair and CEO from parent company L Brands two years ago after his close ties to Jeffrey Epstein came under scrutiny, gave $250,000 last month to the Republican Governors Association, according to three sources with knowledge of the donation.
It was Wexner’s first six-figure political contribution since 2018, when he also contributed $250,000 to the RGA.
A spokesperson for Wexner declined to comment on the donation. An RGA spokesperson also declined to comment.
Wexner’s political donations receded sharply after his close association with Epstein drew scrutiny in 2019. Their relationship dated to the 1980s, when Wexner hired the relatively unknown Epstein to be his money manager. Wexner gave Epstein power of attorney over his finances in 1991. The retail magnate also gifted Epstein a $56 million mansion in New York’s Upper East Side in 2011, even though his spokesman told the New York Times they had severed ties about a decade prior.
After Epstein died in prison while awaiting trial, Wexner told L Brands investors in September 2019: “Being taken advantage of by someone who is … so depraved is something I’m embarrassed I’m even close to. In the present, everyone has to feel enormous regret for the advantage that was taken of so many young women.” Wexner has not been charged with a crime.
The New York Times reported in 2020 that three L Brands executives alerted Wexner in the 1990s that Epstein was using his relationship with him to pose as a model scout for Victoria’s Secret to lure young women to be sexual assaulted.
Maria Farmer has alleged Epstein assaulted her on Wexner’s Ohio compound in 1996, where she said she was held against her wishes for 12 hours while she waited for her father to arrive. Wexner and his wife Abigail told The Washington Post in a 2019 statement that they had never heard of Farmer before her accusation.
A vocal critic of Donald Trump, Wexner announced in 2018 that he was leaving the Republican party.

DOJ urges Supreme Court to turn away Ghislaine Maxwell's appeal

The Department of Justice on Monday urged the Supreme Court to turn away an appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, the former associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for conspiring with and aiding Epstein in his sexual abuse of underage girls.
Maxwell, 63, had urged the court earlier this year to review her case, arguing that an unusual co-conspirator's clause in Epstein's 2007 non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in Florida barred her subsequent prosecution in New York. A district court and a federal appeals court previously rejected that argument, and the DOJ today urged the high court to do the same.
"That contention is incorrect, and petitioner does not show that it would succeed in any court of appeals," wrote U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer.
At the core of Maxwell's petition for SCOTUS review is her contention that the language of Epstein's non-prosecution agreement (NPA) specifically limited his protection to the Southern District of Florida, whereas the language of the co-conspirator clause should have been read to prohibit her prosecution in any federal district.
The co-conspirator clause stated that if "Epstein successfully fulfills all of the terms and conditions of this agreement, the United States also agrees that it will not institute any criminal charges against any potential co-conspirators of Epstein, including but not limited to" four of Epstein's assistants. Maxwell was not among the four women named.
"Despite the existence of a non-prosecution agreement promising in plain language that the United States would not prosecute any co-conspirator of Jeffrey Epstein, the United States in fact prosecuted Ghislaine Maxwell as a co-conspirator of Jeffrey Epstein,"her attorneys wrote in their petition to SCOTUS in April.
The DOJ, however, argues in their response that the U.S. Attorney's Office in Florida then led by R. Alexander Acosta did not intend to bind other federal districts and had no authority to do so without the approval of those districts or the Criminal Division of the DOJ.
"And there is no indication here that anyone involved in negotiating Epstein's NPA obtained the necessary approval for binding other USAOs or thought it was necessary," the DOJ's brief states.
The DOJ also contends that – even if the co-conspirators clause could be read to apply nationwide as Maxwell claims - there is no evidence that the parties who negotiated the NPA intended for the co-conspirators clause to benefit Maxwell, who the government describes as "at most, an incidental third-party beneficiary of the agreement."
"The government was not even aware of [Maxwell's] role in Epstein's scheme at that time," Sauer wrote, and urged the justices to deny Maxwell's petition for certiorari.
In a statement Monday, an attorney for Maxwell hinted at the swirling controversy surrounding the Trump administration's decision not to release any further records related to investigations of Epstein.

Artist says suspected human remains found in Victorville are actually his artwork
An artist says what authorities described as possible human remains found outside a Victorville gas station on Sunday, prompting a law enforcement investigation, was actually one of his art pieces in the form of a grotesque and macabre teddy bear.
The grisly discovery was made just after noon at an ARCO station at Bear Valley and Amethyst roads, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez.
"A caller reported finding an object that appeared to be human remains," she said.
Authorities cordoned off the area with yellow crime scene tape and summoned detectives and coroner's officials to the scene.
"A coroner investigator has taken possession of the object, and the investigation is continuing," Rodriguez said.
Witnesses posted comments and photographs online indicating a teddy bear spotted in front of the business was related to the discovery of the suspected remained. Photos depicted what appeared to be a teddy bear patched together from flesh.
Sheriff's officials declined to describe exactly what coroner's investigators collected.
"Further information regarding the investigation will be released when available," according to Rodriguez.
But Robert Kelly, who operates a South Carolina-based business called DarkSeed Creations that specializes in custom, macabre-themed artwork, said he recognized photos of the suspicious item that were being circulated on social media.
"I made this bear and shipped it to a customer last week,"he said in an email. "I'm just finding out about this and getting tagged left and right."
"So about an hour ago I found out a news article in Victorville Ca has one of my skin bears used in a prank at a bus station there," he wrote. "My phone is dying from trying to keep up with answering everyone."
"So here is the basics," Kelly said. "Yes I made the bear in the news video. Yes that's my etsy shop screenshotted on [the] news articles. Yes I did ship that bear to an etsy customer in Victorville CA last week. Yes you can still order one too. No I did not have any knowledge of the buyers intentions nor was I involved in a prank on the other side of the nation from me."
According to the listing, the bears are made from latex.
