John Heinz

Henry John Heinz III (October 23, 1938 – April 4, 1991) was an American businessman and politician who served as a United States senator from Pennsylvania from 1977 until his death in 1991. An heir to the Heinz family fortune, Heinz entered politics in 1971 when he won a special election to replace Robert Corbett to represent Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district. In 1976, Heinz ran to replace retiring Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott. Heinz narrowly won in the Republican primary over future Senator Arlen Specter and defeated William Green III in the general election. Heinz won re-election in 1982 and 1988 by large margins. On April 4, 1991, Heinz was killed when his plane, facing mechanical problems, collided with a helicopter inspecting the plane, killing all involved in the crash.

In 1971, Heinz entered politics after Representative Robert Corbett, who represented Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district, died in office. After winning the Republican primary, Heinz won the special election on November 2, 1971, to fill the vacancy created by Corbett's death. Heinz was re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972 and 1974.[2][1] During his tenure, he cultivated a moderate record in the vein of Pennsylvania's two Republican senators Hugh Scott and Richard Schweiker.[3] Also in 1974, he declined to challenge Democratic governor Milton Schapp.

On April 4, 1991, Heinz and six other people, including two children, were killed when a Sun Co. Aviation Department Bell 412 helicopter and a Piper Aerostar, with Heinz aboard, collided in mid-air above Merion Elementary School in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania. All aboard both aircraft, as well as two children at the school, were killed.[17] The helicopter was attempting to investigate a problem with the landing gear of Heinz's plane, and while moving in for a closer look, collided with the plane, causing both aircraft to lose control and crash.[18] The subsequent NTSB investigation attributed the cause of the crash to poor judgment by the pilots of the two aircraft involved.[19][20]

Following a funeral at Heinz Chapel[21] in Pittsburgh and a Washington, D.C. memorial service that was attended by President George H. W. Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle,[22] Senator Heinz's remains were interred in the Heinz family mausoleum in Homewood Cemetery, located in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[2]

Heinz's long time friend, Senator Tim Wirth of Colorado,[23] remarked: "He really believed he could make the world a better place, such a contrast to the jaded resignation of our time. He could send the Senate leadership up a wall faster than anyone I've seen." Heinz's son André said at the services: "Dad, I am so grateful for the time we had, and I miss you and I love you."[24]

In 1995, Teresa, Heinz's widow, married Heinz's Senate colleague, future Democratic presidential nominee and Secretary of State John Kerry.[25]

For those who might be vague on the definition…

Fifth Column

Fifth column, clandestine group or faction of subversive agents who attempt to undermine a nation’s solidarity by any means at their disposal. The term is conventionally credited to Emilio Mola Vidal, a Nationalist general during the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). As four of his army columns moved on Madrid, the general referred to his militant supporters within the capital as his “fifth column,” intent on undermining the loyalist government from within.

A cardinal technique of the fifth column is the infiltration of sympathizers into the entire fabric of the nation under attack and, particularly, into positions of policy decision and national defense. From such key posts, fifth-column activists exploit the fears of a people by spreading rumours and misinformation, as well as by employing the more standard techniques of espionage and sabotage.

Maxwell's death triggered the collapse of his publishing empire as banks called in loans. His sons briefly attempted to keep the business together, but failed as the news emerged that the elder Maxwell had embezzled hundreds of millions of pounds from his own companies' pension funds. The Maxwell companies applied for bankruptcy protection in 1992. After Maxwell's death, large discrepancies in his companies' finances were revealed, including his fraudulent misappropriation of the Mirror Group pension fund.[3]

Is this really nothing more than another way to exploit kids? Not sure if it is actually connected to Maxwell, still digging.

What really happened night crooked tycoon Robert Maxwell fell to his death from yacht

30 years ago, the crooked tycoon who owned the Mirror Robert Maxwell - father to Ghislaine Maxwell - fell off his yacht. But was it an accident, suicide, or something more sinister?

It's 30 years since Robert Maxwell’s naked body was found in the sea off the Canary Islands, his death a mystery which endures to this day.

The media mogul, whose company owned the Daily Mirror, had been reported missing by the crew of his luxury yacht hours before the discovery.

But Maxwell, a larger-than-life and celebrated figure, soon went from hero to villain as it was found that he had looted millions from the Mirror pension fund to prop up his debt-ridden business empire.

His treachery condemned many of his workers to poverty and left his newspapers on the verge of collapse.

With the Spanish authorities ruling out foul play and the family insisting he would never take his own life, conspiracy theories abound to this day.

Here, former Daily Mirror reporter John Jackson recalls being at the centre of the storm which gripped the world…

Within hours of arriving for work on Tuesday, November 5, 1991, editor Richard Stott relayed the astonishing news that publisher Robert Maxwell had been lost overboard from his yacht Lady Ghislaine and I was on my way to find him and support family members.

With Bonfire Night plans scrapped, photographer Ken Lennox and I took the lift to the roof of the building next to the Mirror, then at London’s Holborn Circus.

Maxwell had bought the site to provide himself with a luxury office and helicopter pad.

His copter landed and on board were his wife Betty, dressed completely in black, and Philip, the eldest of the Maxwell’s remaining seven children (two died in childhood).

Nothing was said as we hovered over Fleet Street and headed to Farnborough Airport in Hampshire where we boarded one of the family’s Gulfstream jets for the flight to the Canaries.

Around an hour later a message was relayed to the pilot that a body had been found in the sea and we were diverted to a military base near Las Palmas.

At that moment Betty told me: “Whatever has happened, I can assure you he did not kill himself. He would never do that.”

We taxied up to the hangar where the body was waiting in the air-sea rescue helicopter.

A request for 70-year-old Betty to climb aboard and make an identification was instantly rebuffed.

She told them to bring the body into a nearby room.

As this was being arranged – with difficulty as Maxwell was very overweight – the rescue pilot told Betty and me: “I have plucked many bodies from the sea and I just want to tell you he did not drown. There was no water in his lungs.”

I then escorted Betty and Philip to view the body of my boss.

His skin hadn’t discoloured or wrinkled but what intrigued me was that he was lying with his arms up either side of his head and his hands were clenched.

As a father of four it reminded me of how babies often fall asleep.

It was certainly Robert Maxwell. Betty relayed this to editor Stott and the front page headline next morning was “The Man Who Saved The Mirror”. Little did we know of the revelations to follow…

From the airport we were driven to board the Lady Ghislaine and start three hectic days with only one thought dominating Betty’s mind.

She was determined to get the body released so we could fly it to Jerusalem and arrive before sunset on Friday. Jewish tradition dictates a body must be buried as soon as possible.

But we would not be able to land on the Sabbath – Saturday, meaning the burial would be delayed until Sunday, five days after her husband’s death.

The next day youngest daughter Ghislaine flew in from New York. At this point I should say I never saw one tear in the eye of wife or daughter.

Betty admitted the marriage had been falling apart for years and although Ghislaine was her father’s favourite, she remembered the cruel way he often treated the children.
