Laura Ingraham Obtains Criminal Referral on Adam Schiff — Shocking Allegations of Mortgage Fraud and Falsified Bank Records Revealed

by Jim Hᴏft Jul. 16, 2025 9:30 am1/2

On Tuesday night’s episode of The Ingraham Angle, Laura revealed that she had exclusively obtained a criminal referral for none other than Democrat Senator Adam Schiff — and the allegations are explosive. The criminal referral, reportedly submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice by Housing Director Bill Pulte, accuses Schiff of falsifying bank documents and property records over a period of 16 years in order to score more favorable mortgage terms.

The fraudulent activity allegedly spanned from 2003 to 2019, and centers on a lavish Potomac, Maryland home — while Schiff simultaneously maintained a questionable condo in Burbank, California.“The referral, submitted to the DOJ by Housing Director Bill Pulte, alleges that Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms—impacting payments from 2003 to 2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property. Schiff owns a home in California and another in Maryland,” said Ingraham.

“Well, perhaps—perhaps—when the Democrats decided to have Mr. High and Mighty Adam Schiff head an impeachment witch hunt against Trump, they should have done their due diligence—not just on their absurd allegations, but on their own chairman.”

WATCH: Former federal prosecutor Jonathan Fahey joined Laura Ingraham to analyze the criminal referral.

Laura Ingraham: Jonathan, look, the mortgage fraud issue might seem technical, or like it’s just a small, minor thing—but what can you tell us?

Jonathan Fahey (00:01:12.16) Well, when Trump does it, they make it seem like the biggest deal ever—like they alleged in the New York case. That’s a fun irony here. But basically, it’s lying on a mortgage application to get more favorable loan terms. When you say it’s your primary residence, you get a more favorable loan term than if it’s a rental residence or something else.

What’s really interesting about this—Adam—this was not just coming from President Trump. In 2023, CNN reported on this issue. He’s, on one hand, saying he’s a resident of California to run for office—to run for the House, and then for the Senate—and also taking a deduction in California based on claiming residency in California.

For the IRS, also, you can’t claim residency in both California and Maryland. He’s got a lot of issues, because it seems like, however this breaks down, it looks like he’s saying one thing here, one thing there. He can’t be a resident in both places. So it’s either: was he lying in California, or lying in Maryland to get more favorable loan terms?

But the irony is so rich here—with all of the Adam Schiff stuff: Russiagate, the first impeachment, and now this. It’s pretty funny. The Gateway Pundit previously reported that President Trump announced on Tuesday that loathsome Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) has been caught allegedly committing mortgage fraud by Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division. “I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud.”

“Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA,” Trump added.” I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook. The FRAUD began with the refinance of his Maryland property on February 6, 2009, and continued through multiple transactions until the Maryland property was correctly designated as a second home on October 13, 2020.”

“Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice.” In 2023, The Gateway Pundit reported that Schiff has claimed his primary residence as Maryland. In April 2023, a concerned citizen from the state of California uncovered what is believed to be crimes committed by Schiff.

Schiff was elected to Congress in 2000. In 2003, he reportedly purchased a home in Maryland with his wife, stating they would occupy this home for 12 consecutive months as their “primary residence.” Despite this claim, Schiff continued to vote in California.

Schiff’s primary residence is a large 3,420-square-foot home in tony Montgomery County. He reportedly maintains a little condo in Burbank, California, as another “primary” residence likely to reduce his tax bill. It’s questionable whether he even goes there.Schiff refinanced his Maryland home in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013. In 2009, a House Ethics investigation claimed that Schiff did this, and Schiff argued it was an error, and he repaid the exempt taxes to the state of Maryland.

YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS UP: Lying Pencil-Neck Adam Schiff, Who Wants to Replace Laphonza Butler of Maryland as California’s Newest Senator, Lives in Maryland Too!

by Cullen LinebargerNov. 2, 20234:20 pm== Published by Gateway Pundit in 2023

Could Maryland soon have another Senator claiming to be from California representing them in the near future?

Cristina Laila revealed last month that Gavin Newsom’s senate replacement, radical Marxist lesbian Laphonza Butler, actually lives in the Old Line State rather the Golden State. She was even registered to vote there last year.

Butler replaced the late Dianne Feinstein, who passed away in late September. Butler announced last month she would not run for a for a full six-year term. She will instead just serve out the remainder of Feinstein’s term which expires in 2024.

It turns out lying pencil-neck Adam Schiff, who wants to replace Butler, has a very similar problem. He too has claimed his primary residence as Maryland.

CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski and Em Steck reported that his primary residence is a large 3,420 square-foot home based in Tony Montgomery County. He reportedly maintains a little condo in Burbank, California as another “primary” residence likely to reduce his tax bill. It’s questionable whether he even goes there.

Kaczynski and Steck say tax records show he paid California property taxes using his Maryland address. Moreover, they reveal more records and photos on his social media accounts which show Schiff actually makes his full-time home in Maryland.

CNN reported:

For more than a decade, California Senate hopeful Rep. Adam Schiff has claimed his primary residence is a 3,420 square foot home he owns in Maryland, according to a review of mortgage records.

At the same time, Schiff has for years taken a homeowner’s tax exemption on a much smaller 650 square foot condo he owns in Burbank, California, also claiming that home as his primary residence for a reduction in his tax bill of $7,000. He did not take an exemption on his home in Maryland.

While Schiff has signed documents asserting both the Maryland property and the significantly smaller Burbank condo as his primary residences, tax records indicate that he paid his California property taxes in 2017 with a check featuring his Maryland address – the only year he paid with a personal check. And a review of past comments, pictures shared on his public social media, and records indicate Schiff makes his full-time home in Maryland.

==But wait, there’s more! The deed records demonstrate that Schiff first designated the Maryland home as his primary residence in 2003. Schiff then refinanced his mortgage in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 while continuing to claim the Maryland house as his primary home.

The Los Angeles County deed records for Schiff’s Burbank condo, which were purchased in 2009, were notarized in Maryland according to CNN. In addition, the state: California and the county: Los Angeles are crossed out on one page of the deed. Maryland and Montgomery County are written in.==

CNN also reports that the records list Schiff’s Maryland home as an address the records are being returned to.

This potential scandal could create headaches for Schiff assuming Democrat primary voters care at all. He faces stiff competition from radical left favorites such as Rep. Katie Porter and Rep. Barbara Lee for Butler’s seat.

Schiff would arguably be the absolute worst choice considering his role in spreading the despicable Russia collusion hoax to discredit President Trump’s historic 2016 election win. Then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy kicked him off the House Intelligence Committee as punishment back in January.

Congress also voted to censure him in March to the Democrats’ dismay. Why is Congress not referring him to law enforcement. Why do they think censuring House or Senate members is legal. Many of those people steal the Congress money and spend on themselves personally. That's all they do to criminals is censure them, but they kicked Matt Gaetz nothing, and he wasn't stealing anything. Congress thinks the laws don't apply to them.

Trump’s ultimatum isn’t an ultimatum – and Moscow knows it

US President tries a new tack on Russia: pressure without provocation

US President Donald Trump has finally issued his much-anticipated “important statement” on Russia. For days, speculation swirled, particularly among pro-Ukrainian circles, that the long-awaited U-turn was coming. Trump, they hoped, would finally get tough – perhaps inspired by the increasingly hawkish rhetoric of Senator Lindsey Graham (who, incidentally, is designated a terrorist and extremist in Russia). Even sceptics began to believe that Trump was gearing up to show Moscow “Kuzka’s mother,” a famous idiomatic expression of aggression used by Nikita Khrushchev during the Cold War

But in classic Trump fashion, expectations were dashed.

The supposedly “extremely tough ultimatum” turned out to be something else entirely. Trump threatened tariff sanctions against Russia and its trading partners – but scrapped Graham’s extreme proposal of 500% duties. Instead, he floated the idea of 100% tariffs that would only take effect after 50 days, if he chooses to enforce them, and if Russia fails to strike a deal.

Trump also announced new arms deliveries to Ukraine. But these aren’t gifts – they’ll be sold, not given, and passed through European intermediaries. Supposedly, Ukraine will receive 17 Patriot systems. Yet we soon learned the first of these deliveries won’t arrive for at least two months – again, 50 days. And even now, basic questions remain unanswered.

What exactly did Trump mean by “17 Patriots”?Seventeen batteries? Launchers? Missiles?

If he meant 17 batteries, that’s simply not plausible. The US itself only operates around 30 active batteries. Germany and Israel combined don’t have anywhere near that many available systems. Such a figure would significantly boost Ukraine’s air defences – but it’s almost certainly exaggerated. Seventeen missiles? That would be laughable – but not unthinkable. Washington recently sent just 10 Patriot missiles ina “military aid” package so modest it wouldn’t suffice for a single battle.

Seventeen launchers? That seems more realistic. A typical battery consists of six to eight launchers, so this would amount to two or three batteries – more than what Germany and Norway have promised to purchase for Ukraine. Yet even the Pentagon can’t confirm the details. And one suspects Trump himself may be fuzzy on the specifics. His role, after all, is to make the pronouncements; others are left to clean up the mess.

The so-called “14 July ultimatum” has already become a textbook example of Trump’s diplomatic approach. In fact, a new phrase has emerged in American political slang: “Trump Always Chickens Out” or TACO. The acronym speaks for itself. It refers to the president’s habit in trade and security talks of making grandiose threats, only to backtrack or delay implementation.

This appears to be another case in point. The negotiations are at an impasse. Trump still craves a Nobel Peace Prize. And he’s reluctant to become too entangled in the Ukrainian conflict. So he’s reached for the oldest trick in his playbook:the non-ultimatum ultimatum.

This allows him to sound tough while giving Moscow space – and perhaps even time – to act. It also offers cover with his MAGA base, many of whom are frustrated by distractions like Iran or the Epstein scandal and aren’t eager to see America dragged further into Ukraine.

The genius of it, from Trump’s perspective, is that it promises everything and nothing at once. No clear strategy. No detailed demands. Just an open-ended threat backed by ambiguous timelines. It’s pressure without posture. Leverage without leadership.

What’s striking is that the White House didn’t even ask Russia to de-escalate. There were no appeals to halt the almost daily strikes on Ukraine or curb battlefield activity. In effect, Russia has been handed a 50-day window – intentionally or not – to do as it sees fit. A quiet concession to the Kremlin? Perhaps. A careless side effect? Possibly. Either way, Moscow gains.

America, too, comes out ahead – at least financially. Under the new arrangement, Western Europe picks up the tab for Ukraine’s defence, while US companies get paid to offload ageing equipment. Trump’s famed “art of the deal” may amount to little more than selling junk with a smile. But if so, he’s done it masterfully.

Still, as a political manoeuvre, the outcome is more uncertain. Trump may believe he’s found the sweet spot between hawks and doves, between NATO allies and nationalist critics. But trying to be all things to all people rarely ends well.Appeasement disguised as firmness satisfies no one for long.

And while Trump plays for time,Russia holds the initiative. That’s the real story here.

Zelensky not a dependable partner for US – former Trump adviser

The Ukrainian leader and his chief of staff Andrey Yermak are untrustworthy figures, Steve Cortes has said

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and his chief of staff Andrey Yermak are not “dependable” partners for the US, former Trump adviser Steve Cortes has said, pointing to transparency and corruption issues in Kiev.

Cortes made the statement in a reply on X toUkrainian journalist Diana Panchenko, who had stressed the importance of knowing “the difference between helping Ukraine and helping Zelensky.”She claimed that“Ukrainians want peace” while “Zelensky wants money and to stay in power.”

“Exactly,” Cortes responded, stating that in order for the US-Ukraine partnership to work,Kiev “must become transparent and corruption-free.”

“Yermak and Zelensky are not dependable, believable partners for the United States,” he said.

Cortes, who previously served as a senior adviser to President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, has long been critical of the Ukrainian government’s internal practices.

Earlier this month, he published a commentarywarning of waning trust in Kiev’s leadership, singling out Yermak as a central figure in what he described as systemic corruption, calling him Ukraine’s “co-president” and accusing him of shielding officials under criminal investigation.

Cortes argued that Yermak has become a nuisance in UK-Ukraine relations, noting bipartisan frustration with the aide. He specifically cited Yermak’s role in the dismissal of General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, a popular and respected military leader, while officials like Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Chernyshov—who has faced corruption allegations—remained in office. Chernyshov, however, was ultimately sacked earlier this week amid an ongoing cabinet reshuffle.

The former adviser’s remarks echo longstanding concerns expressed by Donald Trump, who has also described Zelensky as the “primary obstacle” to peace and has repeatedly criticized the scale of US support for Ukraine and the lack of accountability for the billions of dollars sent to Kiev.

In March, Trump adviser David Sacks also called for a full audit of US aid to Ukraine, claiming there had been “tons of stories” about corruption and the misuse of American weapons. He said the only remaining question was “how much” had been stolen, calling Kiev’s leadership massively corrupt.

Trump will release the Grand Conspiracy. Must Read.

Trump embraces special prosecutor for weaponization probe and Epstein, vows new declassifications

Trump said such a probe could cover the FBI abuses during the now-disgraced Russia collusion probe against him, the bureau’s failure to probe intelligence of a Chinese plot to help Joe Biden in the 2020 election with fake mail-in ballots and former Special Prosecutor Jack Smith’s pursuit of multiple cases against him .

By John Solomon and Amanda Head Updated: July 16, 2025 3:54pm1/2

President Donald Trump on Wednesday embraced the FBI’s decision to open a conspiracy probe into a decade of alleged intelligence abuses and weaponized law enforcement, suggesting it could be led by a special prosecutor and even delve into “credible evidence” in the Jeffrey Epstein case in order to give Americans a greater dose of transparency and accountability.

He also vowed to declassify two highly sensitive pieces of intelligence to help further the prosecutor's efforts.

“Well, I'm happy that they did that,” Trump said during a wide-ranging interview with the Just the News, No Noise television show when asked about the FBI’s decision a few weeks ago to open a probe that examines abuses from

2016 to 2024 by Democrats and government officials as a continuing criminal conspiracy. “I don't know much about it, but it deserves to be done.”

“It was a disgrace what happened, what happened in 2016 and what happened in 2020. It's a disgraceful situation," he said. "And our voting has to be straightened out. I always say if you don't have borders, if you don't have fair and free voting, you don't have a country.”

Unprompted, Trump then volunteered on his own that a special prosecutor – if one is appointed by Justice – to look at weaponization could also delve into "anything credible" on Jeffrey Epstein and his files to make sure Americans have a full accounting.

“I think they could look at all of it.It's all the same scam. They could look at this Jeffrey Epstein hoax also, because that's the same stuff that's all put out by Democrats,” Trump said, when asked what he’d most like to see the FBI investigate.

When pressed whether he was comfortable with a special prosecutor on weaponization also looking at Epstein, he answered,“They've already looked at it, and they are looking at it, and I think all they have to do is put out anything credible.”

The Trump administration vowed to release all remaining evidence in the now-deceased financier's sex scandal and prosecutions, but its early efforts were hampered by missteps by Attorney General Pam Bondi, which created distrust in the MAGA base.

Trump has defended Bondi in the face of heavy criticism but it hasn’t silenced the outcry. In fact, when the FBI and DOJ sent out a memo concluding Epstein did commit suicide in prison and did not leave behind a ledger/client list of the people whom he entertained with young female escorts, many prominent conservatives openly cast doubt and derision on the findings. Now Democrats have joined the chorus.

While Trump opened the door for Bondi to appoint the prosecutor and include Epstein in the scope, Trump also blasted MAGA conservatives who have obsessed about Epstein for weeks with speculation on social media, saying it only gave oxygen to Democrats to distract from the administration’s priorities.

“You know, some of the naive Republicans fall right into line, like they always do. They just don't have the sustainability. … There’s something they don't have, that stick to it like glue,” he said. “The Democrats, you know, they have bad policy, they have bad candidates, they have bad everything, but they stick together. The Republicans don't do that."

“But they ought to look into the Jeffrey Epstein hoax too, because that's another hoax that's frankly, put out by the Democrats pushing, pushing the Republicans, and put out by the Democrats,” he added.

Trump said he fears prior officials inside the FBI and intelligence agencies may have doctored files about Epstein to either protect Democrats or harm Republicans.

“I can imagine what they put into files, just like they did with the others. I mean, the Steele dossier was a total fake, right? It took two years to figure that out,” he said. “So I would imagine if they were run by (former FBI director) Chris Wray and they were run by (former FBI director James) Comey, and because it was actually even before that administration, they've been running these files, and so much of the things that we found were fake.”

He finished by assuring the MAGA base that he has no desire to prevent further investigation or transparency and hopes the idea of a special prosecutor who can look at both weaponization and Epstein satisfies Americans’ concerns.

“So frankly, you know, I think I love that they're looking at all this stuff. If they are, I hope they are.”

Trump also flatly stated he would declassify two long-secret intelligence files to help the prosecution. The first is a classified annex to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report into the FBI’s mishandling of the Hillary Clinton email scandal. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has been pressing for the release of that evidence, saying it will show U.S. intelligence received new evidence of possible criminal wrongdoing before then-FBI director James Comey cleared Clinton and the bureau never investigated it.

“I would do that. Absolutely. I think it should be looked at,” he answered. “The whole thing was a scam, yeah. And I would do that gladly.”

The second piece of evidence is a classified annex to Russiagate Special Prosecutor John Durham’s final report called the “Clinton Plan intelligence,” which was a U.S. intelligence intercept suggesting Hillary Clinton had personally approved a plan to concoct a Russia collusion scandal against Trump. That intercept was captured before the FBI opened up its Russia probe, and lawmakers and Durham have suggested it would provide damning evidence to any prosecutor.

“I will absolutely declassify it,”he said when asked about the annex.

Russiagate docs Patel found after Comey FBI 'locked the key' may aid 'grand conspiracy' inquiry

Russiagate documents "hidden" by Comey's FBI but found by the Patel era bureau might help build a "grand conspiracy" case launched by the FBI.1/3(This is what John Solomon said last week, that you will forget this Epstein mess, and be so happy to see what is coming)

By Jerry Dunleavy Published: July 14, 2025 11:12pm

The FBI's decision to open a probe that treats the last decade of political weaponization of law enforcement and intelligence agencies as an ongoing criminal conspiracy is being cheered by lawmakers and could be aided by Director

==Kash Patel's recent discovery of a room where the bureau had "hidden" evidence from public and congressional view.

Patel's discovery of the evidence "vault" or "lockbox" as he called it on a recent interview with podcaster Joe Rogan and the opening of the "overarching conspiracy" probe occurred around the same time this spring==, officials told Just the News.

The discovery that the FBI stashed away evidence in politically hot probes like Russigate could help prosecutors convince a grand jury that government officials were engaged in a coverup or an effort to deprive civil liberties, experts said.

"I think it's part of a coordinated strategy to deprive people of their constitutional rights to speech and to petition the government for redress of agreements and also the right to counsel," former Trump attorney John Eastman told the John Solomon Reports podcast on Monday.

And while the discovery of the evidence vault and the emergence of the conspiracy probe are shrouded in some secrecy, their existence has buoyed Republicans in Congress who long believed prosecution of government actors behind scandals like Russiagate and Biden family corruption was warranted.

"They put America through unbelievable, really historic political turmoil, knowing that the entire narrative was completely false," Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., declared Monday, after word of the conspiracy case surfaced in a Just the News report.

"I felt these people were criminals for many years now," Johnson told the Just the News, No Noise TV show. "I mean, the fact that they knew this…the whole Russiagate was a conspiracy hatched by the Clinton campaign back in 2016.

President Obama was briefed on that. I mean, they all knew."

Just the Newsreported Monday that the FBI quietly launched an investigation into a decade of Democratic Party and "deep-state" antics ranging from ginning up the Trump-Russia collusion to examining special counsel Jack Smith's pursuit of Trump.

That news could open the door for the appointment of a special prosecutor to examine whether the different events support a presentation to a grand jury regarding a criminal conspiracy to influence three consecutive presidential elections to the benefit of Democrats and the detriment of Trump.

Previously hidden documents or information with potential impact being suddenly discovered is a developing pattern, and the release of that material is likely to have major repercussions.

The FBI’s “grand conspiracy” case was opened several weeks ago, Just the News reported, andit could get a significant boost if Trump were to declassify two yet-classified troves of evidence thatidentify key pieces of the alleged conspiracy dating back to the summer of 2016, according to several people directly familiar with the inquiry who spoke to Just the News on a condition of anonymity.

Patel said in a mid-May joint interview with FBI deputy director Dan Bongino that “as much as we know about Crossfire Hurricane, he and I just found out more last week, and we’re continuing to work with Congress to put those documents out.”

The FBI chief said in that interview on Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News that “that’s how vindictive and vicious the former leadership structure was.Not only did they bastardize the FISA process and lie to the American public, they withheld and hid documentation and put it in rooms where people weren’t supposed to look. And it’s a good thing that we’re here now to clean it up, and you’re about to see a wave of transparency.”

Bongino, the deputy director, accompanied Patel in that interview and told Fox News' Maria Bartromo that the room containing the alleged Russiagate information was “not mentioned” to him nor to Patel when they took over the bureau.

Pieces of the puzzle

Two key clusters of information may determine the direction in which the Department of Justice goes: a classified annex to a 2018 report tied to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz's probe of Hillary Clinton’s improper email server, and a second classified annex from Special Counsel John Durham's final report in 2023 about the DOJ's "Crossfire Hurricane" project.

Durham's secret annex has long been sought by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and the annex may show that credible information about possible wrongdoing was intentionally ignored by the FBI.

On top of all of this, CIA Director John Ratcliffe sent a criminal referral to Patel earlier this month related to possible criminality by Obama's CIA Director John Brennan, sources familiar with Ratcliffe's actions who declined to be named told Just the News last week.

A review by the CIA released earlier this month critiqued the actions taken by Brennan.

Ratcliffe said that Brennan, Comey and then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper were “excessively involved” in drafting the assessment, did so in a “chaotic,” “atypical” and “markedly unconventional” process, and rushed to complete it.

He added that "Multiple senior CIA managers opposed including the [Steele] dossier, asserting it did not meet even basic tradecraft standards. Despite these objections,” Ratcliffe stated, “Brennan showed a preference for narrative consistency over analytical soundness.”

The bigger picture comes into focus

All of this — combined with the secretive documents recently unearthed at the Hoover Building and brought to the attention of Patel — may provide guideposts for the newly-revealed FBI investigation. It will likely be up to Attorney General Pam Bondi to decide if a criminal prosecution — or a special prosecutor — is warranted.

Patel revealed a key detail about the non-public Crossfire Hurricane evidence when speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in early June. Patel calledthe Trump-Russia collusion hoax “the biggest political criminal scheme ever perpetrated by portions of the FBI leadership and other elements of the intelligence community.”

Rogan let out a shocked “what?” as Patel explained that “my guys are going through that right now.” He said there was “a lot of stuff” to review.

“These guys were so arrogant, they would write everything down. And I found the documents,” Patel said, adding, “They’re so arrogant, they think, ‘No one’s going to catch us. I’m going to write everything down. We’re going to put it in a lockbox, we’re going to put it in a vault, and no one’s going to find it.’ Well, you know what? I found the vault and now I’m going to work.”

Patel addressed a potential barrier to investigation brought by the five-year statute of limitations on lying to Congress, saying that the crimes could potentially be prosecuted if they were tied to a broader conspiracy.

“So generally the statute of limitations on crimes for process crimes that we call them is five years. But if you can time it to an overarching conspiracy, there is no statute of limitations,” the FBI director said.

“So if there was more egregious conduct that no one knew about beforethat we are just finding and we are investigating, then we’ll have to re-look at it. The one thing we will do is put out all that information to the American public once we actually get through it, and we’ll give it to Congress.” Patel added:

“And if we can work with our partners at DOJ to come up with a prosecution, that’ll be their decision. We’ll do it. … If we can hold people accountable in terms of indictments, then we’ll work with our partners at DOJ.”

DOJ’s “Weaponization Working Group” may scrutinize lawfare conspiracy

An executive order issued by Trump and a memo by Attorney General Pam Bondi both regarding the end of “weaponization” within theJustice Department could provide guidance in pursuing a lawfare conspiracy case.

Trump’s executive order on “Ending the Weaponization of The Federal Government” was issued on Inauguration Day in January.

“The American people have witnessed the previous administration engage in a systematic campaign against its perceived political opponents, weaponizing the legal force of numerous Federal law enforcement agencies and the Intelligence Community against those perceived political opponentsin the form of investigations, prosecutions, civil enforcement actions, and other related actions,”Trump said.

“These actions appear orientedmore toward inflicting political pain than toward pursuing actual justice or legitimate governmental objectives.”

Bondi’s follow-up DOJ-wide memo on “Restoring the Integrity and Credibility of the Department of Justice” was issued on February 5, and it established the “Weaponization Working Group” which Bondi said “will conduct a review of the activities of all departments and agencies exercising civil or criminal enforcement authority of the United States over the last four years […] to identify instances where a department's or agency's conduct appears to have been designed to achieve political objectives or other improper aims rather than pursuing justice or legitimate governmental objectives.”

Bondi also wrote that the DOJ “must take immediate and overdue steps to restore integrity and credibility with the public that we are charged with protecting, and to ensure that the Department's personnel are ready and willing to faithfully implement the policy agenda of the duly elected President of the United States.”

Trump and Bondi's work cited with approval

Trump’s executive order and Bondi’s memo may very well have real teeth. They were cited by the DOJ when it sought to intervene in a state-level Colorado prosecution against former Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters.

Peters was found guilty in August 2024 on “7 of 10 criminal charges related to a security breach that occurred in the spring of 2021 in the elections office she oversaw,” according to Colorado Newsline. The outlet reported in October 2024 thatPeters was sentenced to nine years in prison, with the judge who handed down the sentence repeatedly calling her a “charlatan.”

Peters has appealed her case, and she filed an application for a writ of habeas corpus in February.

Yaakov Roth, then the acting assistant attorney general for DOJ’s Civil Division, filed a statement of interest with the federal court in March, citing Trump’s order and Bondi’s memo.

"Ms. Peters is currently incarcerated while pursuing a direct appeal of her underlying nonviolent convictions and combined nine-year sentence,” the DOJ said. “The Application explains that Ms. Peters suffers from serious health issues and that, while incarcerated, her physical and mental health have deteriorated. Reasonable concerns have been raised about various aspects of Ms. Peters’ case.”

The Justice Department has shown that it is willing to turn Trump’s order and Bondi’s memo on “weaponization” into concrete legal action, and observers await Patel's disclosure — to Grassley or the public, or both — to see a path forward.
