Pop legend dies at 87 after previously hospitalized with ‘extreme pain’
Connie Francis, the legendary singer who topped the charts in the 1950s and ‘60s and whose music saw a recent resurgence on social media, has died. She was 87.
Francis’ longtime friend and president of Concetta Records Ron Roberts announced her death in a Facebook post Thursday, July 17.
“It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend Connie Francis last night,” Roberts wrote. “I know that Connie would approve that her fans are among the first to learn of this sad news.”
Francis’ deaths comes just over two weeks after she was hospitalized with “extreme pain.”
“As many of you may now have learned through Cousin Brucie’s Facebook page, I am back in hospital where I have been undergoing tests and checks to determine the cause(s) of the extreme pain I have been experiencing,” Francis wrote in a July 2 Facebook post.
She updated fans on July 4, saying, “Today I am feeling much better after a good night, and wanted to take this opportunity of wishing you all a happy Fourth of July. Thank you all for your continued kind thoughts and prayers. A happy Independence Day to you and your loved ones.”
Francis is a top-selling female singer who charted tons of songs during the 1950s and ‘60s. She was the first woman in history to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” topped the chart in 1960.
Francis was also the first woman to have three No. 1 hits on the chart, according to Billboard. Her other biggest hits include “Where the Boys Are,” “Stupid Cupid” “Who’s Sorry Now?,” “Mama,” “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” and “Pretty Little Baby. The latter went viral on TikTok earlier this year, racking up more than 3 million lip synch videos.
Francis was married four times and adopted a son named Joey during her third marriage to restaurateur Joseph Garzilli. The singer also dated Tony Ferretti from 2003 until his death in 2022. Francis is survived by her adopted son, Joey Garzilli, according to Variety.
