Contrary to Star Wars and most movies, unless there is smoke, even visible-light-spectrum lasers are not visible. Most energy is outside the visible light spectrum, especially the microwaves and above. The higher the wavelength, the smaller the antenna has to be to focus the beam. Then it is a matter of what the beam is passing through to deliver its energy to the target. Going through air delivers less energy to the target than going through a vacuum. Going through a cloud delivers less than through air. Smoke is even worse.
