Donald Trump fired Rex Tillerson while in Kenya
US President Donald Trump has fired his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who left Kenya on Monday after a three-day State visit to Nairobi.
The Washington Post reports that Trump asked Tillerson to step aside on Friday, March 9 moments after he had arrived in Kenya.
This forced the US Secretary of State to cut short his trip of Africa telling the media that he was sick.
While in Kenya, Tillerson canceled events he was scheduled to undertake in Nairobi on Saturday, the second day of his three-day visit to the country.
He was scheduled to have a working lunch with Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma as well as meet with American diplomats serving at the new U.S. Embassy.
The top American diplomat was also set to tour Nairobi’s Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
According to the Washington Post, Trump “believes that Tillerson is “too establishment” in his thinking and he it was important to replace him as he prepares for talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as upcoming trade negotiations.”
AFP reports that while addressing reporters before leaving on a trip to California, Trump spoke openly of his disagreements with Tillerson — including over the Iran nuclear deal — as he explained his decision to replace him.
“We got along actually quite well but we disagreed on things,” Trump said. “When you look at the Iran deal, I thought it was terrible, he thought it was okay. I wanted to either break it or do something, he felt a little differently. So we were not really thinking the same.”
Tillerson is set to replaced by current CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
In announcing Tillerson’s sacking earlier Tuesday, Trump praised Pompeo, a former US army officer and congressman who led the CIA for nearly 14 months, saying he would do a “fantastic job!”

Wow, time flies! Today is that Sixth Month Anniversary of my Second Term. Importantly, it’s being hailed as one of the most consequential periods of any President. In other words, we got a lot of good and great things done, including ending numerous wars of Countries not related to us other than through Trade and/or, in certain cases, friendship. Six months is not a long time to have totally revived a major Country. “One year ago our Country was DEAD, with almost no hope of revival. Today the USA is the “hottest”and most respected Country anywhere in the World.” Happy Anniversary!!!
