Kiev hit by missiles and drones in reported retaliatory strike

The alleged attacks came after days of attempted Ukrainian drone raids targeting Moscow

Ukrainian officials have claimed that Moscow launched multiple waves of missile and drone strikes on Kiev overnight. The Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment.

The first strikes were reported shortly after midnight, with Mayor Vitaly Klitschko urging residents to seek shelter as the capital’s air defenses engaged incoming targets.

More explosions were heard between 2:00am and 3:00am, with the head of the city’s military administration, Timur Tkachenko, confirming that “a fire broke out on the roof of a non-residential building.”

Ukrainian officials claimed at least one person was killed and another hospitalized as of 5:00 am, after falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones triggered fires at a residential building and near the entrance to the Lukyanovskaya metro station.

Five Israeli soldiers kill themselves in two weeks

Army officials link spike in suicides to combat trauma from Israel’s ongoing “war on seven fronts”

At least five Israeli soldiers have taken their own lives over the past two weeks, including both conscripts and reservists recently discharged after extended combat deployments in Gaza and other active conflict zones.

Suicides within the IDF ranks have surged since West Jerusalem deployed troops to Gaza following the deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Seven soldiers died by suicide by the end of 2023, followed by 21 cases confirmed in 2024, and at least 20 incidents since the start of this year.

The most recent case, confirmed on Sunday, involved a 19-year-old Norwegian immigrant who immigrated to Israel to join the IDF less than a year ago and was still undergoing training. Four others ended their lives in the past two weeks, including a Golani Brigade serviceman who shot himself at the Sde Teiman base, and reservist Daniel Edri, who self-immolated after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Most cases involve active-duty reservists, with military officials attributing the rise to combat-related trauma rather than personal or family circumstances.

“One cannot breathe in the face of this statistic,” opposition leader Yair Lapid said. “This war also kills souls.”

The IDF has also confirmed that thousands of reservists have withdrawn from combat roles due to psychological stress. The true number of suicides due to service-related mental health issues may be higher, with Haaretz reporting at least 12 non-combat veterans, whose deaths were not included in the army’s official statistics in recent years.

Now in its 21st month, the Gaza conflict has placed intense strain on Israeli forces, with prolonged deployments and mounting losses. Since the start of the operation, 893 Israeli soldiers have been killed, according to official data, in addition to nearly 1,200 Israeli civilians killed during the October 7 Hamas raid. The retaliatory offensive has resulted in nearly 59,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Beyond Gaza, Israel has conducted airstrikes and limited ground operations in Lebanon, expanded its military presence in Syria, and bombed Iran. It has also escalated its activities in Iraq, Yemen and the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israel is fighting on seven fronts “to defend ourselves against… barbarism.”

Putin speaks of threat to Russian sovereignty

Overreliance on foreign-made technologies and oil and gas revenues could pose a risk to the country, the president has said

Russia would inevitably lose its sovereignty if it relies solely on oil and gas revenues and abandons domestic production in favor of imports, President Vladimir Putin has said.

In an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin released on Sunday, Putin defended Russia’s decades-long effort to localize automobile manufacturing, saying it was essential for protecting the country’s economic and political autonomy.

He recalled that in the 1990s many of his government colleagues wanted to abandon efforts to develop the car industry and instead rely on foreign-made vehicles, a view that he opposed.

“We must talk about technological independence… If we buy everything with the oil and gas [revenues] – and now they [the West] are trying to cut us off from oil and gas – then Russia will simply lose its competitiveness, and with it, its sovereignty,” he said.

According to Putin, efforts to improve the domestic car industry began with cooperation with Western partners that were licensed to build assembly plants in Russia. Starting in the early 2010s, the authorities gradually tightened localization requirements, demanding that automakers produce more components domestically.

“This was serious work. We were essentially creating our own cars,” Putin remarked, adding that the effort paid off after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, which saw an exodus of Western companies from Russia as Kiev’s backers introduced sanctions against Moscow.

Russia sold about 1.571 million new passenger cars in 2024 (up 48%), with Lada accounting for roughly 28% (436,155 units) and remaining the market leader, according to the analytical agency Autostat. However, all others spots in the top ten were occupied by Chinese brands. Russia’s Kamaz also distributed the most trucks in the country last year, despite an overall drop in sales, the agency said.

Putin has personally promoted the domestic automobile industry and has often been seen driving Lada and Kamaz vehicles. He also uses a limousine from the Russian luxury brand Aurus as his presidential car. In 2024, he gifted Aurus limos to North Korea’s Kim Jong‑un and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Meanwhile in the Israeli press eyes on the prize

As war rages, Gaza’s $4 billion gas field remains untapped

Legal uncertainties and territorial disputes have stalled Gaza’s Marine gas project for nearly 30 years; expert says recognition of Palestinian sovereignty could resolve issues, enabling development of vital energy resource

International recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state could resolve long-standing legal uncertainties surrounding its right to develop the Gaza Marine natural gas field, according to Michael Bron, an expert involved in the project and author of a new book on Palestine’s untapped gas reserves.

Bron estimates the field contains approximately 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas, with potential revenues of around $4 billion. “It won’t turn the Palestinians into the next Qataris or Singaporeans, but it would be independent income — not foreign aid, which the Palestinian economy continues to rely on,” he said in an interview with The Guardian

Efforts to develop the field have been stalled for nearly 30 years amid legal disputes over ownership. A Palestinian human rights law firm recently sent a warning letter to Italy’s state-owned energy company ENI, arguing that exploration in “Zone G”—where Israel’s Energy Ministry has issued six licenses—could be illegal. The letter contends that 62 percent of the zone lies within Gaza’s maritime territory, meaning Israel lacks the authority to grant exploration rights.

Palestine declared its maritime boundaries, including an exclusive economic zone, upon acceding to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 2015, and submitted a formal claim in 2019, although Israel is not a signatory.

Bron says that international recognition—especially by countries housing major oil and gas companies—would clarify the legal status of Gaza’s offshore resources. This, he argues, would secure both a revenue stream and a more independent energy supply for the Palestinian Authority, lessening its reliance on Israel.

ENI has responded that no licenses for Gaza Marine have been issued and no exploration activity is currently underway. Meanwhile, watchdog group Global Witness has criticized the Eastern Mediterranean gas pipeline, citing its 90-kilometer route from Ashkelon, Israel, to El-Arish, Egypt. The group asserts the pipeline crosses Palestinian waters without providing revenue to the Palestinian Authority.

Zamir said proposing IDF tighten grip on Gaza as alternative to ‘humanitarian city’

Report says Netanyahu blocking military chief from presenting plan to the security cabinet

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has drawn up plans for the military to further intensify operations against Hamas, according to a Channel 12 news report that quotes sources familiar with the proposal describing it as “the plan for taking over Gaza.”

The report says the plan is an alternative to the controversial “humanitarian city” in Rafah pushed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which Zamir opposes, and would be acted on if hostage talks collapse or in the case of a truce if no deal is reached to end the war following the 60-day ceasefire.

The proposal reportedly calls for the IDF to capture and hold much more territory in the Gaza Strip than it currently holds, with the military gradually taking more ground each day to show Hamas what it’s losing.

A separate report by the Israel Hayom daily stresses the plan would see the military encircle most parts of Gaza, not take over the entire enclave.

The newspaper also reports that Netanyahu has prevented Zamir from presenting the proposal to the security cabinet and blocked a smaller group of ministers whom the IDF chief briefed from deliberating it.

'Bollywood' Indian couple charged in multimillion-dollar fraud scheme in Texas

Sidhartha “Sammy” Mukherjee and his wife Sunita Mukherjee were arrested in June and charged with felony theft.

A couple known for their Bollywood-style musical performances has been charged with orchestrating a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme.

Sidhartha “Sammy” Mukherjee and his wife Sunita Mukherjee were arrested in June and charged with felony theft after authorities uncovered a fraudulent real estate investment operation that allegedly scammed investors out of over $4 million. The couple reportedly lured victims to invest in projects that never existed.

Following his arrest and release on bail, Sammy Mukherjee was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is currently being held at a detention facility in Fort Worth, Texas. Reports suggest he may also be wanted for fraud in India.

“In [my] 23 years, [Sammy Mukherjee] is probably the most prolific fraudster I've seen,” explained Detective Brian Brennan of the Euless Police Department, according to CBS News.

In 2024, a couple revealed they had lost $325,000 in a real estate scheme. Detective Brennan initially believed it was a mere civil dispute, but realized “this was much larger than initially reported.” Brennan found forged documents, including fake invoices and remodeling contracts.

“The level of counterfeit documents … it had to be a full-time job for him to do that,” Brennan explained.

Forensic accountants working with the FBI traced the funds and found more than $4 million in losses. Investors believe more than 100 individuals may have been affected by the scheme.

The Mukherjees also allegedly submitted a fraudulent application for a federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan, listing fake employees and fabricated company records. Authorities say they went as far as sending threatening emails to elderly victims, warning them of arrest unless they made payments.

Despite the ongoing fraud, the couple maintained a public image, even headlining a 2024 gala hosted by the Indian Traditions & Cultural Society of North America.

If convicted, the Mukherjees face between five and 99 years in prison. Federal records have yet to clarify their immigration status.

Lawyers for Israel’s big loss in court against Nine Entertainment

Nine female lawyers from the “Lawyers for Israel” WhatsApp group have lost their application for the judge to order the registrar of the Federal Court of Australia to institute contempt proceedings against 2 companies and 6 employees from Nine Entertainment.

Their application was frivolous and vexatious, and what they were trying to do was weaponize contempt laws to silence Nine Entertainment and then go after other media and social media users, which could have included me and this website. But more on that in a minute.

The background

On the 20th of December 2023 journalist Antoinette Lattouf was sacked by the ABC after the “Lawyers for Israel” WhatsApp group, with 156 members, ran an email campaign with the support of News Corp to pressure the ABC management to sack Lattouf.

In January 2024 the SMH published leaked messages from the “Lawyers for Israel” WhatsApp messaging group which exposed their organised email campaign to ABC management, including then ABC Chair Ita Buttrose, to have Antoinette Lattouf sacked.

Antoinette Lattouf instituted unlawful termination proceedings with the hearing held in February 2025. (On the 25th of June 2025 the court found that Ms Lattouf’s allegations had been proven and granted consequential relief: see Lattouf v Australian Broadcasting Corporation (No 2) [2025] FCA 669.)

At the start of the hearing 9 female lawyers from the “Lawyers for Israel” WhatsApp group applied for and were granted suppression orders because their email complaints to the ABC, with their names and contact details, were part of the evidence filed in the matter and their lawyer said they would face harassment if their details were not suppressed.

The proposed suppression order was not opposed by Antoinette Lattouf and the ABC.

The 9 female lawyers claim the 2 companies and 6 employees from Nine Entertainment breached the court orders and they filed an application seeking to have the judge order the registrar of the court to institute contempt proceedings.

In the judgement on Friday (18/7/25) Justice Rangiah said at paragraphs 4 to 9 and 26, 29, 32, 45, 60 and 42: (Click here to read the full judgment)
