When I was on the Hopi Reservation my host family went to a Zuni Dance in New Mexico for the day (I did not attend), and when my family got back all the kids (young ones and even the older teenage/younger adults) were talking about the "tall kachinas" and that they were the "real" ones. Most of the Kachinas that you will see during the Homedances will be the Men's Society, where the Men dress up as Kachinas and they themselves are indeed considered Kachinas (even for ceremonial and religious purposes). But there are times were "mystery" beings appear at the dances and will be dressed in some type of Kachina garb.

These Kachinas were apparently the "Tall Kachinas" that visit the villages during Homedances, and my family couldn't stop talking about them.

The other time where the Hopis couldn't stop talking about something that happened at one of the dances, is a very old Hopi elder showed up at a dance in Shungopovi village.

All the Kachinas stopped dancing and went over to him. The old Hopi just got up very quietly after a while and walked out of the plaza. Nobody ever saw that guy again. Nobody knew who he was. The Hopi Elders of Shungopovi believed that he was the Creator that showed up.

Stranger things than fiction, my Frens.
