Ukrainian drones reportedly attack Samara plant making raw materials for Russian artillery, bombs

July 22, 2025 11:37 am

Ukraine carried out a wave of overnight drone attacks across Russia on July 22, Moscow said, while a Ukrainian official said that one of the targets was a key military-linked facility.

In Russia's Samara Oblast, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said several drones were destroyed while attempting to strike an industrial facility.

Fedorishchev reported no casualties or damage but confirmed that authorities temporarily restricted mobile internet in the area to allegedly assist military efforts in neutralizing the drones.

According to Andrii Kovalenko, an official at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, the target in Samara was the Novokuybyshevsk Petrochemical Company, a major gas-processing and petrochemical facility that supplies raw materials used in the production of explosives.

These materials are used in artillery shells, aerial bombs, cluster munitions, and rockets — critical components of Russia's military operations, he said.

"The volume of processing (of raw materials) is about 1 million tons per year," Kovalenko said. It remains unclear whether the facility suffered any damage.

Samara lies roughly 500 kilometers (300 miles) from the Ukraine-Russia border.

Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 35 fixed-wing drones overnight in various regions, including those near Moscow, the Black Sea, and several western and southern oblasts.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that a drone was downed en route to the capital, with emergency services responding at the debris site. This marks the sixth consecutive night of drone attacks on Moscow.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify these reports. Kyiv has repeatedly targeted Russian industrial and military facilities deep in the rear to undermine Moscow's ability to wage its all-out war.

British submarine fires drone from torpedo tube

July 22, 2025

The Royal Navy has conducted a pioneering trial demonstrating the launch and recovery of uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) from a submarine, expanding the capabilities of the UK’s nuclear-powered attack submarines.

According to a news update received by the UK Defence Journal, the trial took place in the Mediterranean under Project Scylla.

The exercise successfully tested the use of torpedo tubes to deploy and retrieve autonomous systems designed for underwater reconnaissance, communication, and seabed warfare missions.

Project Scylla is being delivered through AUKUS Pillar 2, which focuses on developing advanced defence technologies to strengthen security across both the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions.

The trial represents an early milestone in integrating such technologies into frontline operations.

Commodore Marcus Rose, Deputy Director for Underwater Battlespace Capabilities, said:

“Delivery of these trials demonstrates our commitment to the use of advanced capabilities as part of a future hybrid Fleet and are a big step forward in delivering new capability to the Submarine Service.”

The Royal Navy said that trials such as this form part of its Atlantic Bastion ambition, which aims to incorporate advanced technologies including autonomous systems and artificial intelligence to boost the effectiveness of the Fleet in contested environments.

The trial was conducted by the Submarine Delivery Agency’s Autonomy Unit, in partnership with L3Harris, a key industry provider of autonomous maritime systems.

Russia Deploys Chinese-Made Drone to Hunt and Overload Ukrainian Air Defenses – Intel

July 22, 2025, 3:47 pm

The Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) has published the technical specifications and components of a new Russian drone that is currently actively used by the Russian army.

According to intelligence officials, this UAV performs reconnaissance tasks and is used as a decoy to detect and overload the Ukrainian air defense system.

In addition, according to some reports, the drone is capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 15 kg (33 lbs).

The aircraft has a delta-wing fuselage similar to the Shahed-136 but is significantly smaller. All components and modules on the UAV are of Chinese origin.

“Almost half of them, the flight controller with autopilot, navigation modules and antennas, airspeed sensor, and Pitot tube, come from a single Chinese company, CUAV Technology,” the HUR press service reported.

In October 2022, the company announced restrictions on the supply of its products to Ukraine and Russia in order to prevent their use for military purposes.

However, in 2023, a vertical take-off drone was presented in Russia as a domestic development, which, according to Ukrainian intelligence, turned out to be a product of CUAV Technology.

In addition to CUAV products, such drones use a DLE-brand engine and electronic ignition module, KST servos, a Razer FPV camera manufactured by Foxeer Technology, a Mayatech RFD900X data transmission module, a ReadyToSky video transmitter, a Hobbywing Technology power regulator, and an HRB Power battery.

This system enables the establishment of a data transmission channel from the drone to its ground station or from UAV to UAV, thereby expanding its reconnaissance capabilities.

Russia has previously used individual components from this new drone in other models.

In particular, DLE engines were installed on the Gerbera and Parodya drones, while KST servos were used in the Shahed-136, V2U, as well as in universal glide and correction modules and aerial bombs.

In addition, the drone is equipped with a Chinese copy of the Australian RFD900x data transmission module from RFDesign.

Like the original, this system is designed for long-range data transfer – up to 40 km in direct line of sight, depending on the antenna type.

China showcases OW5 laser weapon in ‘border control’ exercise

July 22, 2025, 21:41:27 IST

China on Monday (July 21) conducted a warfare demonstration showcasing a wide array of uncrewed systems, in an attempt to position itself as a major global drone supplier.

State media CCTV reported that the exercise was held at an Inner Mongolia testing ground, and it simulated the “seizure and control of critical border locations.”

The drill featured six phases of a futuristic battlefield scenario, including reconnaissance, AI planning, infiltration, aerial attack, elimination, and anti-access, deploying various Chinese-made systems.

Displayed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) included ISR drones, long- and short-range loitering munitions, uncrewed helicopters, and tactical first-person view (FPV) devices.

Ground systems, such as smart command-and-control units and anti-drone defences, were also showcased.

A rare live-fire demonstration featured the OW-5 anti-drone laser weapon, whose “high-energy beam barely visible to bare eyes” downed a drone “a few kilometres away,” CCTV reported.

Unveiled statically at the 2021 Zhuhai air show, the upgraded OW5-A50, with a 50-kilowatt output, integrates command-and-control, radar, sensors, and a laser gun on an 8x8 Dongfeng truck, enabling standalone or networked air defence.

CCTV highlighted laser weapons’ ability to instantly destroy targets with unlimited ammunition, dependent on the power supply.

The exercise demonstrated drone-artillery coordination, with a 155mm howitzer engaging targets using real-time UAV-transmitted coordinates.

Small tactical drones, including a flying jammer disrupting electro-optical equipment over several kilometres, were also featured.

Notable drones included the Flying Frog (VTOL reconnaissance), Flying Falcon (high-speed loitering munition), Black Bee (grenade-throwing), and Flying Whale (bomb-dropping).

“With these smart partners, our infantry soldiers can evolve into future nodes with full-domain situational awareness and precision strikes, to win by intelligence on the modern battlefield,” CCTV stated.

Norinco, China’s largest arms manufacturer and exporter, organised the event, unveiling its Feilong (Flying Dragon) loitering munitions family.

The series includes the anti-personnel Feilong-10, with a range under 10km, and the Feilong-300A, an anti-radiation drone targeting air defence radars up to 300km away.

The Feilong-60 serves as a reconnaissance source or hoverable cruise missile, launchable from rocket systems, while the Feilong-30 adapts to trucks, vehicles, or ships.

These drones can form a networked swarm for saturated attacks, per CCTV.

China’s cyborg battle suit lets soldiers toss drones, see through walls, run on bots

Updated: Jul 22, 2025 08:19 AM EST

China’s Kestrel Defense has introduced a new powered exoskeleton suit designed to improve the endurance, mobility, and situational awareness of soldiers who operate drones and battlefield systems.

Photos shared on Chinese social media show a soldier wearing the advanced gear, including mechanical leg supports, a modular backpack, a head-mounted display, and drone-launch capability, signaling China’s push to develop “supersoldier” systems.

China’s combat trooper robot suit

The suit appears to be built for drone operators, artillery units, and reconnaissance teams.

It is envisaged to help reduce fatigue during long missions by supporting soldiers in crouched or kneeling positions, which are often required for remote drone control.

The lower-body frame visibly includes reinforced knee braces and mechanical linkages along the thighs and calves, which allow soldiers to move across rugged terrain and carry heavier loads with less effort.

The suit includes a compact system for launching drones, allowing soldiers to send out and control small flying robots from the field.

One image shows a soldier holding a camouflaged quadcopter, which is probably meant for short-range surveillance or reconnaissance tasks in city settings.

Attached to the back of the exoskeleton is a central spine-like structure that appears to carry the power system and onboard electronics.

The modular backpack may contain battery packs, control units, and data link hardware needed for drone operation.

Articulated shoulder arms may offer upper-body support for lifting gear, weapons, or assisting injured personnel.

The soldier’s helmet includes a head-mounted display system with an augmented reality visor.

This could give real-time drone video feeds, map overlays, or night and thermal vision. The display might also use gesture, eye, or voice commands to interact with drones and sensors.

See through walls, run on bots

In the images, the soldier’s left hand holds a drone controller integrated into the tactical vest, while the right hand grips a small quadcopter drone.

Wrist-mounted screens and other visible gear suggest additional digital tools, possibly including health monitors, navigation aids, or encrypted communications systems.

Kestrel Defense has not released detailed technical specifications, but promotional materials indicate the exoskeleton is designed for small drone operations and ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) roles.

The company has hinted at support for quadcopters and other lightweight platforms that are deployable on the move.

Analysts say the system reflects a growing global trend in military modernization, where robotics, wearable computing, and AI-powered systems are combined to boost infantry performance.

In battlefield scenarios where GPS signals can be jammed, exoskeleton-equipped troops with independent drone capabilities may offer critical advantages.

The move is part of China’s efforts to close the gap with Western military technologies.

With similar projects underway in the United States, Russia, and Europe, China’s new system highlights how future warfare may center around hyper-connected soldiers equipped with autonomous platforms.

The suit is still in the prototype phase, but its debut suggests that Kestrel aims to bring the concept closer to battlefield use.

Whether for border patrol, reconnaissance, or urban combat, the exoskeleton could be a mobile command node, able to move fast, see far, and carry more.

Colombia Escalates Drone Warfare Against Drug Gangs with Homegrown Explosive-Carrying UAVs

July 22, 2025

Colombia’s military tests a new domestically produced drone that packs significant firepower to counter escalating aerial attacks from drug traffickers, who arm cheap commercial models with homemade explosives.

This development highlights the rapid evolution of drone technology in asymmetric conflicts, as reported by NPR.

Criminal Groups Arm Drones for Surveillance and Strikes

Drug traffickers in Colombia actively deploy commercial drones to monitor their operations and launch attacks. These groups purchase models online for around $1,000 and modify them with improvised explosives.

Army Gen. Juan Carlos Correa explains that criminals use these UAVs to oversee drug crops and cocaine labs, eliminate rivals, and target security forces.

Over the past two years, such attacks have succeeded about 200 times, including one day with 17 strikes.

“In one single day they launched 17 attacks,” Correa told NPR.

This shift levels the playing field in a conflict that pits under-resourced groups against a technologically superior military.

Air Force Gen. Andrés Guzmán, who leads the state-run drone manufacturer CIAC, notes the affordability boosts criminal capabilities.

“The conflict will always be a David vs. Goliath situation but a drone can be the perfect solution for these groups when they are confronting the military, which has a lot more technology,” he told NPR.

Building on that, the ease of access allows rapid deployment without regulatory hurdles.

Military Develops Tactical Drones for Counteroffensives

Colombia’s armed forces respond by producing their own drones to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. In a hangar near Bogotá’s airport, officers test a model that carries up to 18 pounds (about 8 kilograms) of explosives.

Colombian Air Force Col. Andrés Talavera oversees these flights and describes the UAV’s design. “It’s a tactical drone that’s easy for troops to carry but one that also has a lot of firepower,” says Talavera.

Production ramps up slowly, with CIAC outputting just eight units monthly. This pace contrasts sharply with traffickers’ ability to acquire dozens quickly online.

The military’s drones aim to provide troops with portable, high-impact tools for operations against guerrilla hideouts and smuggling routes.

Defenses Lag Behind Evolving Threats

Security forces struggle to neutralize incoming drones effectively. Soldiers often shoot at them indiscriminately, but the UAVs’ small size and agility make this tactic unreliable.

Talavera emphasizes that radar and jammer systems offer the best protection by disrupting drone frequencies. However, these countermeasures come at a steep price—up to $15,000 to down a $2,000 enemy model.

Laura Bonilla, deputy director of the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation in Bogotá, points to bureaucratic delays as a key obstacle. Excessive red tape slows military drone acquisitions and operations.

“There is too much bureaucracy. So, it’s really difficult for the armed forces to reach the same capacity” as drug trafficking groups, she said. “The criminals don’t need any permits.”

This development raises questions about adapting procurement processes to match the speed of commercial tech advancements.

Civilian Casualties Highlight Risks of Imprecise Attacks

Drone warfare’s expansion endangers non-combatants. Criminals’ homemade grenades lack precision, damaging homes and causing unintended deaths.

Correa recounts a tragic incident: “The grenades are hand-made by them. The targeting system is not very precise.

There was a 10-year-old kid who was killed by one of these grenades in the middle of a town.”

Military personnel also suffer, with about 60 troops wounded and four killed in the past two years. One victim, 20-year-old soldier Edison Guerrero, died in May near the Venezuelan border during a patrol.

His sister, Noralba Rodríguez, shared her anguish: “This war doesn’t make any sense.” As criminals refine their drone skills, Bonilla warns that they currently hold the upper hand in this evolving aerial domain.

The conflict’s drone integration signals broader trends in how affordable UAVs reshape security strategies, urging professionals to consider counter-drone tech’s role in similar global contexts.

Increasing drone incidents near US airports, stadiums prompt alarm, officials say

Updated 07/22/2025, 01:51 PM

U.S. officials told a Senate committee on Tuesday that there have been more than 3,000 drone events near American airports since 2021, including 11 aircraft this year that reported taking evasive action to avoid collisions.

Those drone incidents have caused significant flight delays at times near major airports, said Steven Willoughby, a counter drone official with the Homeland Security Department, who told the Senate Judiciary Committee that in two instances drones collided with aircraft conducting critical response operations during emergencies in California and Texas this year.

Officials also raised concerns about the intentional use of drones for attacks, and also at major sporting events. They also point to major upcoming events like the 2026 World Cup.

Of around 90,000 special events annually where the FBI could have had counter drone protection, it was only used in about 0.05% of events, according to testimony from the Department of Justice and the FBI.

"We cover the Super Bowl, right? What about the other 200-plus NFL games that are happening?" Willoughby said. "We can’t be everywhere all the time."

Sports leagues have also urged Congress to take action. Some tethered drones are used by broadcasters to provide aerial coverage.

Senators and administrative officials said Congress needs to change laws to toughen penalties for drone use and to give federal agencies new expanded authority to address drones that may be used to threaten the public or events.

Congress in 2018 expanded authority of the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security to disable or destroy threatening drones and that has been repeatedly temporarily extended.

New legislation would expand federal coverage for airports and critical infrastructure like power plants, oil refineries or chemical facilities and high-risk prisoner transports.

It would also allow state and local law enforcement to directly take down drones without waiting for federal authorities.

Senator John Cornyn said "it just strikes me we are woefully unprepared." Senator Ted Cruz added "drones pose an immediate and growing threat to our national security."

Willoughby noted that since 2018, the Secret Service has tracked hundreds of drones violating temporary flight restrictions that protect the president and others, while the FBI and Justice Department said drones used as espionage technology within the United States is also increasing.

Willoughby added that in the last six months of 2024, over 27,000 drones were detected within 500 meters of the U.S. southern border.

A man pleaded guilty in June after he was charged with violating defense airspace after he flew a drone over the NFL AFC Championship game in Baltimore in January;

in September, a Boston man was charged with unlawfully flying a drone near the finish line of the April 2024 Boston Marathon, which prompted law enforcement to seize it mid-air and land it.

Infrared Camera Films Peculiar UFOs in Sky Over Brazilian Community

July 22, 2025

An interesting video from Brazil shows multiple UFOs captured cruising through the sky by an infrared camera.

According to a local media report, the peculiar scene was filmed earlier this month in the town of São Pedro.

In the video, a bright object suddenly appears in the sky and briefly ascends before disappearing.

Moments later, a second illumination manifests at a different part of the horizon and travels horizontally over a similarly short distance before it also vanishes.

Strangely, the glowing objects reappear in the night sky shortly thereafter, repeating the same puzzling pattern.

The witness who filmed the weird infrared sighting explained that "what caught the eye is that they were lights that had a much greater brightness than the brightness of an airplane.

It was a white glow that oscillated." It would seem that the individual who filmed the UFOs was not alone in having seen something strange in the sky over São Pedro.

Other residents claim that the appearance of the curious illuminations is a regular weekly occurrence for which they have no explanation, as the silent UFOs do not follow the paths of the usual air traffic that can be seen from the town.

While some have suggested that the sprite-like illuminations could be otherworldly, more skeptical observers posit that the objects may be drones or possibly satellites, which might explain their recurring appearance over São Pedro.

As of now, Brazilian officials have offered no response to the video, which has gone viral on social media in the country and understandably sparked considerable speculation.

To that end, what's your theory for the puzzling objects? Share your best guess with us at the C2C Facebook page.

Why UFO Witnesses Are Too Terrified to Testify: The Intimidation Campaign

July 22, 2025

The most significant “PUBLIC” UFO disclosure effort in modern history is collapsing before our eyes, as witnesses with firsthand knowledge of recovered craft and non-human biologics back out of congressional hearings at the last minute, citing death threats and career destruction.

Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, who chairs the House Task Force on UAP Transparency, was forced to postpone what was supposed to be the critical follow-up hearing to David Grusch’s testimony back in 2023.

“They postponed the date because we couldn’t get people to testify,” Luna explained to reporters, revealing that witnesses were getting “SCIF flu” — refusing to show up even for classified briefings in secure facilities.

The witness intimidation represents a dramatic escalation from when intelligence officer David Grusch first testified under oath in July 2023, claiming the U.S. government operates a “multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering program” and has recovered “non-human biologics” from crash sites.

Representative Eric Burlison, who has been working closely with Grusch, confirms that despite public drama, Grusch continues cooperating with AARO, the Pentagon’s UAP investigation office. However, the broader whistleblower community has gone silent.

The retaliation Grusch faced — including what he described as “very brutal” professional and personal attacks that made him fear for his life — appears to have sent a chilling message to others with similar knowledge.

Luna’s frustration extends beyond individual witnesses to the entire system designed to handle UAP disclosure.

When asked about AARO, supposedly created as a safe space for UAP whistleblowers, Luna was blunt to Mat Laslo from Ask a Pol: “I think AARO should be cut. I think that they’re a joke.”

This assessment gains credibility when compared to reports from Luis Elizondo, who revealed that the FBI is now running its own UAP investigation that is “running laps around the Department of Defense’s AARO program.”

The FBI’s small but effective team has apparently made more progress than the Pentagon’s dedicated UAP office, with Luna rating a recent FBI briefing as “10 out of 10.”

While witnesses disappear and hearings get cancelled, legislative efforts continue through the UAP Disclosure Act (UAPDA) for the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act.

Burlison is working with Senator Mike Rounds on what could be the most significant piece of UAP legislation ever, modeled after the JFK Records Act to mandate disclosure of government UAP records.

The first UAPDA was severely watered down, but there’s new hope with leadership changes.

“It’s my hope that now that we have a different Intel chair, that we’ll have a different outcome,” Burlison explained, noting that former Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner “wouldn’t even discuss” UAP issues, while new Chairman Rick Crawford “seems open to help.”

Perhaps most revealing are recent statements from Senator Rounds, who co-sponsors the disclosure legislation.

When asked about UAP whistleblowers, Rounds admitted he’s “talked to individuals who have seen materials that they were analyzing, but they did not know what it was from.”

When pressed about examining these materials himself, his response was telling: “Where would I go to ask?”

A sitting U.S. Senator doesn’t know where to access potentially non-human technology that his own government apparently possesses, suggesting either unprecedented compartmentalization or deliberate restrictions on congressional oversight.

The suppression pattern extends beyond UAPs to other extraordinary discoveries. At Hawara, Egypt, military satellite specialist Timothy Akers used classified radar technology to detect a 40-meter metallic object buried 60 meters beneath an ancient pyramid. Acres, who spent years tracking submarines for the British Army, described the object as having “material properties unlike anything in his military career” and speculated it might be “some kind of portal, either interdimensional or interstellar.”

Despite confirmation from multiple independent scanning teams, Egyptian authorities completely suppressed excavation attempts, with Dr. Zahi Hawass threatening researchers with national security sanctions and even jailing Professor Aladdin Shaheen, dean of Cairo’s archaeology faculty.

The identical response pattern across different types of discoveries — initial confirmation followed by immediate suppression with threats against investigators — suggests a coordinated effort to prevent disclosure of potentially world-changing information.

Whether involving metallic objects under pyramids or non-human biologics in government facilities, the response remains consistent: silence, intimidation, and cover-up.

With the 2025 NDAA representing perhaps the last hope for legislative disclosure, the window for transparency may be closing as those with the most important information become too frightened to speak, even in the most secure settings possible.

Here we go again! Controversial paper questions whether interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS is 'possibly hostile' alien tech in disguise

July 22, 2025

The newly discovered interstellar object 3I/ATLAS could be a piece of "possibly hostile" extraterrestrial technology in disguise, according to controversial research from a small group of scientists, including a renowned alien-hunting astronomer.

Their paper, which has not been peer-reviewed, echoes similar claims previously made about 'Oumuamua, the first-ever cosmic interloper that was discovered in 2017.

But experts have told Live Science that the new claims are "nonsense" and "insulting," and insist that the available evidence points toward the object being completely natural.

3I/ATLAS was discovered on July 1 barreling toward the sun at more than 130,000 mph (210,000 km/h), and was confirmed to be an interstellar object less than 24 hours later.

Initial observations strongly suggest it is a large comet surrounded by a cloud of ice, gas and dust called a coma, stretching up to 15 miles (24 kilometers) across.

A computer model simulating where it originated from hinted that it could be up to 3 billion years older than our solar system, potentially making it the oldest comet ever seen.

But in a new paper, uploaded July 16 to the preprint server arXiv, a trio of researchers have questioned whether the comet is actually some form of covert alien tech sent here by an advanced, potentially aggressive extraterrestrial civilization.

The researchers described the new paper as a "pedagogical exercise," or thought experiment, and offer no clear evidence of alien involvement. Instead, they point at the comet's "anomalous characteristics" and provide alternative theories to explain them.

The study's most notable author is Avi Loeb, an astronomer at Harvard University who is renowned for linking extraterrestrial objects to intelligent aliens. He is the head of the Galileo Project, which is attempting to detect evidence of technosignatures and UFOs.

In 2023, he led a controversial expedition that claimed to have collected pieces of possible alien tech left behind by an unconfirmed interstellar meteorite in the Pacific Ocean. (These claims have since been largely debunked by outside researchers).

Loeb was also the primary researcher who claimed that the unusual shape and non-gravitational acceleration of the interstellar object 'Oumuamua were signs that it was an alien probe.

Today, the general consensus is that 'Oumuamua was an asteroid that was leaking gas into space, similar to a comet.

However, Loeb and his colleagues have continued to advocate its potential alien origin and have proposed missions to track down the wandering space rock.

Loeb's co-authors for the new study are both associated with the Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is), a U.K. institute dedicated to planning future missions to alien star systems.

In a blog post explaining the new paper, Loeb wrote that if 3I/ATLAS is a "technological artifact" it could be evidence of the dark forest hypothesis, which argues that the reason we have not found evidence of extraterrestrial life is that they are staying silent to remain invisible to potential predators or prey.

"The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity, and would possibly require defensive measures to be undertaken," he wrote.

Alien 'evidence'

Most of the points laid out in the new paper relate to the unusual trajectory of 3I/ATLAS. The object is moving significantly faster than the only other known interstellar objects —

'Oumuamua and Comet Borisov, which was spotted in 2019 — and has entered the solar system at a different angle from its predecessors, approaching the sun side-on relative to our star's orbit through the Milky Way.

Loeb wrote that the object's trajectory "offers various benefits to an extraterrestrial intelligence" that may be using it to subtly spy on Earth.

One such benefit is that 3I/ATLAS will make relatively close approaches to three planets: Jupiter, Mars and Venus. And the minimum distances between the object and these worlds could enable aliens to discretely deploy "gadgets" there, Loeb wrote.

3I/ATLAS will also be hidden on the opposite side of the sun to Earth when it reaches its closest point to our home star in late October.

"This could be intentional to avoid detailed observations from Earth-based telescopes when the object is brightest or when gadgets are sent to Earth from that hidden vantage point," Loeb wrote.

he unusually high speed of 3I/ATLAS also makes it very hard to launch a spacecraft to intercept it before it exits the solar system, which could be another potential sign of clandestine alien activity, the researchers argued.

Based on its current speed, Loeb also noted that 3I/ATLAS would have entered the outer boundaries of the solar system around 8,000 years ago, which is "roughly when human-made technologies became advanced enough to start documenting history on Earth." Although, it is unclear what he is trying to imply by saying this.

The researchers also argued that there is insufficient evidence to show conclusively that 3I/ATLAS is a comet, especially as researchers are yet to identify any "volatiles," or specific chemicals associated with comets, within its coma.

Controversial claims

Since 3I/ATLAS was discovered, researchers have been trying to identify it, and so far, the overwhelming consensus is that it is a comet.

"There have been numerous telescopic observations of 3I/ATLAS demonstrating that it's displaying classical signatures of cometary activity," Darryl Seligman, an astronomer at Michigan State University who led the first study quantifying 3I/ATLAS, told Live Science in an email.

"All evidence points to this being an ordinary comet that was ejected from another solar system, just as countless billions of comets have been ejected from our own solar system," added Samantha Lawler, an astronomer at the University of Regina in Canada who specializes in solar system dynamics.

Any assumptions about the object's lack of volatiles is also premature at this time.

"The object is still pretty far away from the sun, so no, we wouldn't typically expect to find direct evidence of volatiles necessarily," Seligman said. Instead, these compounds will likely become apparent in the coming weeks and months, he added.

Loeb admits that the alien technology scenario is a long shot: "By far, the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet," he wrote in the blog post.

Given the available evidence, many of the researchers who spoke to Live Science are disappointed with the new paper and pointed out that it distracts from the work of other scientists.

"Astronomers all around the world have been thrilled at the arrival of 3I/ATLAS, collaborating to use advanced telescopes to learn about this visitor," Chris Lintott, an astronomer at the University of Oxford who was part of the team that simulated 3I/ATLAS's galactic origins, told Live Science in an email.

"Any suggestion that it's artificial is nonsense on stilts, and is an insult to the exciting work going on to understand this object."

Loeb is no stranger to this type of criticism and has defended his position, writing that "the hypothesis is an interesting exercise in its own right, and is fun to explore, irrespective of its likely validity."

However, while it is important to remain open-minded about any "testable prediction," the new paper pushes this sentiment to the limit, Lawler told Live Science in an email.

"In my experience, the vast majority of scientists subscribe to the idea that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and the evidence presented is absolutely not extraordinary."
