Useful and "good" are two different things.
Military taking down lawless "law enforcement" is a good thing, but selling yourself and binding yourself in a chain of command for a paycheck is not a good thing.
Some know when they join they may have to break the chains they put themselves in, the chain of command, to do what's right, or not do what's wrong. Some couldn't break those chains if every life on the planet depended on it.
