There were never high expectations, except perhaps in White House public statements, but now Israeli media is confirming that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recalled his negotiating team from Qatar as Gaza ceasefire talks have floundered.

This should come as no surprise, given that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have recently announced an expansion of ground operations in Gaza, and into the central part of the Strip. This also comes as scores of Palestinians are killed daily, with in some instances shootings happening while large groups rush aid stations.

Prior to the Israeli team being recalled from Doha, reports indicated that Hamas offered to trade 10 Israeli hostages for 200 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences.

Hamas further wanted some 2,000 Palestinians who have been detained since the war's start to be included in the prisoner swap.

Israel reportedly pushed for a 2-kilometer demilitarized buffer inside the Strip, while Hamas is said to have countered with one kilometer. All of this may be moot from the start, given much more land mass has already been utterly destroyed, and Israel is believed to be paving the way for eventual new settlements.

Times of Israel is further reporting, citing a source privy to negotiations, that US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff shares Israel's view that Hamas’s recent proposal is insufficient and won't get the warring sides to the goal line.

In Israel, the families of the hostage victims are going to be further outraged at what they see as another opportunity to get their loved ones home pass by.

Netanyahu has clearly prioritized the defeat of Hamas, however, to ensure it can never rule Gaza again. And so he has refused to contemplate anything less than a military solution, apparently.

The suburbs in Australia where house prices are surging because of high levels of immigration

Sydney

In Sydney, suburbs with median prices under $1million are almost 40km from the city, with Lurnea having a mid-point price of $996,791.

The 5.8 per cent annual increase was better than Greater Sydney's 1.7 per cent rise over the year and houses in this part of south-west Sydney are selling for a lot less than Greater Sydney's mid-point approaching $1.5million.

Brisbane now has a median house price of $1.011million but affordable suburbs are seeing some of the biggest growth with Acacia Ridge values, 18km south of the city centre, rising by nine per cent to $850,716.

Queensland's population growth of 1.9 per cent last year was better than the national average of 1.7 per cent based on 56,877 moving in from overseas as 25,940 came from interstate.

Melbourne

Melbourne, a city getting more than 100,000 new overseas migrants a year, is a weak housing market but prices are now soaring in affordable outer suburbs where homes with a backyard sell for way less than the city's mid-point of $947,611.

Frankston North, 55km from the city, saw its mid-point house price climb by 6.9 per cent to a still-affordable $645,182.

Adelaide

Adelaide has been Australia's best performing housing market during the past year with values soaring by 7.7 per cent to $886,869 - despite having weaker population growth.

South Australia's population grew by just 1.1 per cent as 1,582 left the state for another part of the country and 19,546 migrants moved in.

Affordable suburbs in Adelaide's north are doing particularly well, thanks to strong demand from investors, with Salisbury East values soaring by 13.4 per cent to $698,790.

Someone earning $100,000 a year can still buy a house at Elizabeth Park where the mid-point price is $569,599 following a 13.1 per cent increase over the year.

Israel says France ‘rewarding terror’ after Macron says he will recognize Palestinian state

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s deputy Hussein al-Sheikh thanks French President Emmanuel Macron after the latter announced that he would recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.

“This position reflects France’s commitment to international law and its support for the Palestinian people’s rights to self-determination and the establishment of our independent state,” Sheikh tweets.

Settlers said to disconnect water supply for 30 Palestinian villages in order to fill up pool

Settlers have taken over a spring that is used to supply water for 30 Palestinian villages in the Ramallah area, Haaretz reports.

The settlers dismantled the flow of the Ein Samia spring’s water to neighboring villages and instead connected it to a nearby pool, according to the report.

Ein Samia includes five wells that belong to the Palestinian Authority’s Jerusalem Water Authority. The wells were vandalized four times in the past month.

Nonetheless, the ID has not deployed troops to secure the spring, and no suspects have been arrested.

Settlers have damaged security cameras at Ein Samia and vandalized water infrastructure in what has caused prolonged water outages to the neighboring villages.

The pool that the settlers are using Ein Samia to fill is called “Shepherds Spring,” and is named after two Israelis who were killed in a 2023 terror attack.

In a video urging the public to donate to the pool, settlers say it has pumped water to the Ramallah area since 1965. “But we did not give up, and after significant efforts, Shepherds Spring is coming back to life,” says Micha Sudai, the owner of an illegal farm outpost nearby.

Responding to the Haaretz report, the IDF says that in recent days, troops received several reports of Israeli civilians damaging water infrastructure in the Ein Samia area. However, by the time troops arrived at the scene, the suspects had fled.

The army says it takes the issue seriously and has allowed PA municipal workers to conduct repairs at Ein Samia.

Arrests in incidents of settler violence are highly rare and convictions are even less likely in what has led a growing number of Western countries to impose sanctions against violent settlers.
