Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) was hospitalized Saturday after becoming ill on a plane, according to Atlanta’s Channel 2 Action News.

Sources told Channel 2 that the 78-year-old civil rights icon fell ill on a flight to Atlanta, where he had planned to attend an evening event.

Lewis is expected to be released from the hospital Sunday, a spokesperson for the lawmaker told the station in a statement.

"Rep. John Lewis is in the hospital tonight for routine observation,” the statement said. “He’s resting comfortably and expects to be released tomorrow."

The longtime civil rights leader was a chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s, and led a voting rights march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Lewis was first elected to Congress in 1986 and has represented the district that includes Atlanta since then.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the nation’s highest civilian honor – by former President Barack Obama in 2011. He has been a frequent and harsh critic of President Trump, boycotting Trump’s inauguration and repeatedly speaking out against his policies.
