Drones Hit Key Russian Electronic Warfare Plant; Moscow Forces Gain More Villages In Central Ukraine

As part of the latest in the war, overnight Ukrainian drones targeted a facility producing radio and electronic warfare equipment in Russia's Stavropol region, according to a Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) official speaking to Reuters.

The official said the strike damaged two sections of the Signal plant in Stavropol, which lies roughly 335 miles from the Ukrainian border. Short video clips showing an explosion and thick, dark smoke rising into the air were subsequently released in order to confirm there was serious damage.

The Signal plant is considered one of Russia's prime producers of electronic warfare systems, manufacturing items such as radar, radio navigation devices, and remote-control communication systems.

"Last night, long-range drones operated by the SBU struck the production facilities of the Signal Radio Plant in Stavropol," the official said.

"Each such strike disrupts production and weakens the enemy's military capabilities. These operations will continue," he added.

For Russia's part, it announced on Saturday that its forces had taken control of two villages in Ukraine, including one in the central Dnipropetrovsk region. This marks a key advance given the longtime static nature of the front lines in Dnipropetrovsk.

The Russian military stated that its troops had "liberated the settlement of Maliyevka" in Dnipropetrovsk, which is a second such capture in the region recently, despite this area not being among the Ukrainian territories formally annexed by Russia.

Kabul Edges Toward Disaster As It Becomes First Modern Capital City To Run Out Of Water

Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, is on the verge of becoming the first modern capital city to run out of water, according to Yahoo/CNN.

Residents across the city are in a daily scramble to find enough to drink, cook, and wash. “We don’t have access to (drinking) water at all,” one woman told CNN. “Water shortage is a huge problem affecting our daily life.”

The Yahoo/CNN report says that years of population growth, over-extraction, and climate change have pushed Kabul’s groundwater to crisis levels. Nearly half of its boreholes have already gone dry. According to Mercy Corps, the city now pumps 44 million cubic meters more water each year than nature can replace.

And the water that is available isn’t safe. Up to 80% of Kabul’s groundwater is contaminated, leading to widespread illness. Residents like Ahmad Yasin have spent months and their life savings digging wells—only to find the water undrinkable. “We boil the well water for extended periods of time, let it cool and then drink it,” he said.

For many, water tankers are the only option—if they can afford them. Some families spend as much as 30% of their income on water. Others walk for hours to public wells or mosques, sometimes pulling their children out of school to help haul heavy buckets.

“The hours that children should be spending in school, they are now basically spending on fetching water,” said Marianna Von Zahn, Mercy Corps’ Afghanistan director of programs. “These harmful coping strategies further deepen the cycle of poverty.”

Women face even greater obstacles. Under Taliban rule, many are barred from leaving home without a male guardian, making a simple task like fetching water dangerous. “They could be harassed or bothered on the way,” one 22-year-old woman told CNN.

Years of mismanagement have collided with worsening drought and flash floods. Kabul used to rely on snowmelt to replenish its aquifers, but warmer winters now bring more rain and less snow—leading to flooding instead of groundwater recharge.

Aid groups are sounding the alarm. If trends continue, Kabul could run out of groundwater by 2030. But efforts to prevent that outcome are being choked off by funding cuts. This year, only $8 million of the $264 million needed for water and sanitation programs has been delivered, according to Mercy Corps.

“Collapsing local systems, frozen funding, and growing regional friction — all while ordinary Afghans face a worsening crisis every day,” Von Zahn said.

Israel planning ‘major offensive’ against Yemen: Report

A security official told Hebrew media that the army is waiting for a decision from the political echelon to begin the offensive and ‘put an end’ to Yemeni attacks

Israel is planning a “major offensive” against Yemen and is waiting for a green light from the Israeli political echelon, Israel’s Channel 14 reported on 23 July.

“The Israeli security establishment is working around the clock on a major offensive plan against the Yemeni Ansarallah group, which will put an end to the numerous terrorist incidents and rocket attacks on Israel,” the Hebrew channel said.

“We are building capabilities, and we will know how to activate them once the political echelon makes a decision,” a senior official told the outlet.

“What we accomplished in 12 minutes in Iran, we will also know how to do in Yemen,” the official added. “The meaning here is that Yemen, which over the past 20 months has been a secondary arena attacked by Israel several times, is now becoming a central arena alongside Gaza, and is now an operational priority on the political level, and thus within the Israeli military as well,” Channel 14 reported.

The report followed Defense Minister Israel Katz's statement on Tuesday that “there are two open fronts now: the Gaza Strip and Yemen.”

Israeli officials, including Katz, have been escalating their rhetoric against Yemen in recent weeks, as Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) missile operations continue to frequently target Israel.

A missile launched from Yemen on Wednesday evening fell outside Israel’s border before reaching its target.

The southern Eilat port has been forced shut due to huge debts and mass layoffs caused by Yemen’s attacks on Israeli interests in the Red Sea.

Man jailed for raping 7-year-old girl at wife’s daycare centre

A Melbourne man has been found guilty of repeatedly raping a seven-year-old girl at his wife’s daycare centre.

The husband of a daycare owner has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for the repeated rape of a seven-year-old girl inside his wife’s daycare centre.

The now 50-year-old offender, who cannot be named, was found guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting the child between February 2021 and August 2022 inside the daycare, which was run out of the couple’s home in Point Cook, southwest of Melbourne.

The abuse happened in the loungeroom of the home after school and on weekends, when she attended the daycare, according to the Herald Sun.

The little girl later told police she was “scared” and “tricked” by the man who she claimed had a “weird smile”.

‘Obama Phone’-Linked CEO Fined $128 Million and Sentenced to Five Years Imprisonment For Defrauding U.S. Government, Money Laundering

South Florida Telecom Company and its CEO Pay $128 Million and CEO is Sentenced to 5 Years for Massive Government Program Fraud

MIAMI –Issa Asad, 51, of Southwest Ranches, Florida, and Q Link Wireless LLC, of Dania Beach, Florida, were sentenced yesterday for conspiring to defraud and commit offenses against the United States in connection with a years-long scheme to steal over $100 million from a celebrated federal program providing discounted phone service to people in need. Asad, Q Link’s CEO, was also sentenced for laundering money from a separate scheme to defraud a different federal program meant to aid individuals and businesses hurt by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Asad and Q Link were each sentenced on Count 1 of an Information, which charged them with conspiring to commit wire fraud and to steal government money, and also with conspiring to defraud the United States, Asad was also sentenced on Count 2 of the Information, which charges him with money laundering.

Asad received a sentence of 60 months’ imprisonment. Q Link agreed to pay a forfeiture money judgment of over $109 million. Asad and Q Link also agreed to jointly paid $109,637,057 in restitution to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Asad separately paid $1,758,339.25 in restitution to the United States Small Business Association, and paid a forfeiture judgment against him of $17,484,118.00. The paid financial penalties and restitution totaled over $128 million.

"Issa Asad and his company, Q Link Wireless, deliberately scammed two vital government programs aimed at supporting people and companies in economic distress, wrongfully diverting hundreds of millions of dollars for their personal benefit and gain, all while impeding the government's capacity to assist those who genuinely required the help," stated U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’ Byrne for the Southern District of Florida. "These outcomes underscore our resolve to make sure that those who mastermind corporate fraud schemes face personal consequences.”

Field Office. “This was a brazen scheme of staggering proportions. Mr. Asad prioritized his own greed, stealing $100 million from taxpayers. Today’s sentencing sends a clear message that our Global Illicit Financial Team and our law enforcement partners remain vigilant and will vigorously pursue those who attempt to enrich themselves through fraudulent means.”
