Commonwealth Bank to replace dozens of staff with AI – just weeks after offshoring hundreds of jobs to India
AI bot to replace 45 roles
CommBank cuts call centre jobs
Australia's biggest bank has announced it will slash dozens of jobs by replacing workers with artificial intelligence.
Commonwealth Bank told the Finance Sector Union (FSU) last week they would be making the cuts, with at least 45 roles to be made redundant.
It comes directly after the bank introduced its new voice bot system to assist customers last month.
About 38,000 workers are employed by the bank in Australia, with around 3,000 in its call centres.
The call centre staff were offered roles in other departments or the opportunity to be reskilled, but instead chose voluntary redundancy.
Earlier this month, Commonwealth Bank created 110 new jobs in India after cutting 304 staff in Australia in June.
Critics claimed the bank was 'offshoring' to drive down labour costs and boost its profit margin, even after recording a net profit of $9.8billion in the 2024/25 financial year.
The bank's latest move marks the first time the FSU has been informed redundancies were directly caused by AI.
