CTE

Overview of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive brain disease caused by repeated head injuries. It primarily affects athletes involved in contact sports and military personnel exposed to blasts. CTE leads to the degeneration of brain cells over time, resulting in various cognitive, behavioral, and physical symptoms.

Symptoms of CTE

CTE symptoms can develop years or even decades after the initial head injuries. They generally progress through four stages:

STAGE SYMPTOMS

1 Confusion, disorientation, dizziness, headaches

2 Memory loss, impulsive behavior, poor judgment

3 Progressive dementia, movement disorders, speech impediments

4 Severe cognitive decline, tremors, loss of coordination

Common symptoms include:

Cognitive issues: Memory loss, trouble thinking, and impaired judgment

Mood changes: Depression, anxiety, aggression, and impulsivity

Physical symptoms: Balance problems, tremors, and difficulty with movement

Causes and Risk Factors

CTE is linked to repeated head injuries, including concussions and non-concussive impacts. The risk factors include:

Participation in contact sports (e.g., football, boxing, hockey)

Military service, especially in combat roles

History of multiple head injuries

Diagnosis and Treatment

Currently, CTE can only be definitively diagnosed through an autopsy after death. There are no specific treatments available, but supportive care can help manage symptoms. Research is ongoing to develop diagnostic methods for living patients and to better understand the disease's progression.

'Putin would do well' to come to the table with Trump, says former deputy national security advisor

Former deputy national security advisor Victoria Coates explains the importance of President Trump's trade deals with the European Union

(I think Trump attacking Putin is not real, I believe they are still negotiating and Trump knows it Ukraine and EU wanting the endless war. There’s too much commerce deals to make with Russia, including joint ventures. We’ll see but I don’t see a real fight with Putin and Russia. Trump had to do it to convince NATO and the EU he’s not favoring Russia, while they are trying to erase Russia. None of those countries have great commercial projects. And they are almost as corrupt as Ukraine. Just my opinion.)

EU threatens Ukraine aid freeze – media

Brussels has reportedly rejected Vladimir Zelensky’s justification for cracking down on anti-corruption investigators

Kiev is facing deeper cuts in EU financial support than it has publicly acknowledged, Ukrainian and German media have reported.Brussels reportedly views Ukraine’s crackdown on anti-corruption institutions as an attempt to shield an ally of Vladimir Zelensky.

Last Friday, the European Commission said it would reduce support under the Ukraine Facility program from a €4.5 billion ($5.2 billion) installment to €3.05 billion ($3.5 billion),citing Kiev’s failure to meet commitments on anti-corruption reforms.

However, Ukrainskaya Pravda has reported that the program has been de facto frozen, alongside another mechanism,ERA Loans, with a total of $60 billion at stake.

On Monday, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported on an EU letter to the Ukrainian government which threatened the suspension of aid.

The Ukrainian government has placed two departments established with Western support to address rampant graft in Ukraine – the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) – under the authority of the country’s prosecutor general.

However, following widespread Western rebukes, Zelensky promised to reverse the decision. Several ofZelensky’s close political supporters, particularly in the Defense Ministry, are in danger of becoming caught in the organization’s crosshairs.

He claimed the move was an effort to eliminate “Russian influence” in the agencies, but EU experts reportedly found the explanation unconvincing.

According to an internal analysis cited by FAZ and shared with EU embassies in Kiev, the changes were described as “the largest interference in the affairs of the Ukrainian anti-corruption system since its inception.”

The analysis also indicated thatthe action was likely prompted by NABU’s investigation into former Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Chernyshov, a close political ally and personal friend of Zelensky. Ukraine’s security service (SBU) allegedly seized case files from NABU investigators, including the lead officer handling the probe, raising concerns about the admissibility of evidence and the integrity of the case.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimedthat Ukrainian bodies were designed not to combat corruption but to give Western governments leverage over Kiev.

(Did Trump while negotiating with EU, tell them to get Zelensky in tow. Zelensky is primarily the one intentionally fucking up peace negotiations?)

US ‘likely’ moved nuclear arms to UK – Bloomberg

Russia earlier denounced NATO debates on reinforcing the bloc’s nuclear posture as “escalatory”

The US has likely deployed nuclear weapons to Britain for the first time in over 15 years, in a potential warning to Russia, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing open-source data and defense experts.

On July 16, a US military transport aircraft flew with its transponder active from Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico – an installation known to house nuclear weapons – to RAF Lakenheath in eastern England, the report says. The aircraft is believed to have carried B61-12 thermonuclear bombs, which would mark the first known US nuclear deployment to the UK since 2008, according to several defense analysts.

Former senior NATO arms control official William Alberque said leavingthe aircraft’s transponder on was intentional and appeared to be aimed at sending a message to Moscow. “This is a down payment that there’s more to come on shifting NATO’s deterrence posture toward strengthening,” he said.“Returning US nuclear weapons to the UK is no small feat.”(PS the UK has no control over the planes, bombs and the area they are placed, its was reported the other day, it’s really just a signal. So the U.S. does not want a war.)

Neither the US nor the UK has confirmed the move.It is also unclear how many weapons the US may have redeployed.

NATO’s nuclear posture in Europe has remained largely unchanged since the end of the Cold War, with tactical nuclear weapons currently stationed in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Türkiye. Any movement of nuclear assets closer to Russia would likely beregarded as a major escalation.

The Bloomberg report comes after the UK – which has nuclear weapons of its own – confirmed plans in June to acquire at least 12 F-35A fighter jets capable of carrying US B61-12 bombs. London called the move “the biggest strengthening of the UK’s nuclear posture in a generation.”

Last year, former NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the bloc was considering deploying more of its nuclearweapons to deter Russia and China – which he described as “potential adversaries.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called theremarks “yet another fueling of tensions.”

EU roads not ready for war – transport chief

Officials have warned of a ‘Russian threat’ and pushed for militarization, despite Moscow denying it has any plans to attack

The EU’s roads and railways are unprepared for war, the bloc’s transport chief has warned. In an interview with the Financial Times published on Tuesday, commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas said thetransportation infrastructure, including bridges, railways, and tunnels, is incapable of moving tanks, troops, or military supplies in case of conflict.

European officials have long warned of a possible conflict with Russia and pushed for militarization, despite Moscow denying it has any plans to attack.

Tzitzikostas saiddefending the region would be impossible if armies cannot move quickly. He argued that if NATO tanks were needed to respond to an invasion, they would risk getting stuck in tunnels, collapsing bridges, and being delayed by border protocols.

“The reality today is that if we want to move military equipment and troops from the western side of Europe to the eastern side,it takes weeks and in some cases months,” he said. “We have old bridges that need to be upgraded, we have narrow bridges that need to be widened and we have nonexistent bridges to be built.”

He explained thatmuch of Europe’s infrastructure is not designed for heavy military transport. Trucks generally weigh up to 40 tons, while a tank can weigh up to 70.

According to Tzitzikostas, Brussels is preparing a strategy to ensure troops can move swiftly. The plan includes upgrading 500 infrastructure projects along four military corridorsand cutting bureaucratic red tape to ease border crossing. The projects, identified with NATO, are classified, but are estimated to cost €17 billion ($19.7 billion). The strategy will be presented later this year.

The initiative comes amid a push for greater militarization across the bloc over what officials describe as the ‘Russian threat’. Recent moves include the €800 billion ReArm Europe program and a pledge by European NATO members to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP.

Moscow has dismissed the claims as “nonsense.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last month that the West uses Russia as a “monster” to justify growing military budgets. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Western leaders of pushing Europe toward direct confrontation.

(The U.S. has protected Europe since the end of WWII, it will literally take them years to build out the armies, arms, equipment and upgrades of territory to build out what the U.S. has been doing 60+ years. And since the EU and Europe are so slow to act it could be 20 years to catch up with Russia. Plus they start long projects and never get them finished due to NO votes from other countries. They are not even close to starting a war. It’s all saber rattling. They should just invite Russia into NATO to protect them. China and Muslim are bigger threats.)

EU’s $750bn energy pledge to US is ‘fantasy’ – Politico

Brussels will struggle to meet massive energy commitment amid market limits, infrastructure gaps, and legal hurdles, the outlet has claimed

The EU’s pledge to buy $750 billion worth of American energy over three years to avert a trade war with Washington is “almost impossible” to honor, Politico reported Tuesday, citing analysts and officials.

The EU and the US finalized a wide-ranging trade pact on Sunday, narrowly avoiding a transatlantic trade war. Under the agreement, most EU exports to the US will face a baseline tariff of 15%. Brussels also pledged to buy $750 billion in US energy and invest $600 billion into the US economy over three years.

According to the outlet, limited US supply, technical obstacles, and theEU’s lack of control over import deals make hitting the targets extremely difficult.

The headline figure is “completely unrealistic,”Laura Page, senior analyst at commodities firm Kpler told the outlet. The EU spent €76 billion on US energy last year – tripling that would require sidelining cheaper suppliers and diverting nearly all US oil and gas exports to Europe. “It’s just never going to happen.”

Despite European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s claim that the plan would boost energy security and reduce reliance on Russia, the numbers remain unconvincing, the outlet noted. While pipeline flows plunged after sanctions and the Nord Stream sabotage,Russian LNG surged, making up 17.5% of EU supply last year, second only to the US at 45.3%.

In 2024, the EU imported €23 billion in oil, gas, and nuclear fuel from Russia—too little to close the gap.

EU refineries also have limited capacity to process American oil, capped around 14%, said Kpler’s Homayoun Falakshahi. “It really is a fantasy,” he said.

A senior Commission official told the outlet the deal depends on having sufficient LNG infrastructure and US shipping capacity, which is not in place.

The Commission alsocan’t make purchases itself – it relies on private companies. “This is not something the EU can guarantee,” one official said. (Orban said the same thing)

(Politico and others are missing the fact that all Trump wanted was the 15% tariff, and he got it for the first time in history. The other stuff is just fluff, if they come through.Think of the Gulf states committing to trillions, not puny millions.)

Western sanctions threat against India is ‘glaring hypocrisy’ – Russian envoy

NATO has threatened New Delhi with sanctions for its Russia ties, while continuing its own trade with the country, Denis Alipov has said

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov has accused NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte of “glaring hypocrisy” for threatening New Delhi with secondary sanctions for its Russia ties, while shielding the bloc’s own economic ties with the sanctioned nation.

In an op-ed with the Economic Times on Sunday, Alipov said,“This glaring hypocrisy exposes the West’s fundamental double standards.”

“Western powers do not want to deprive themselves of the benefits of trade with Russia, yet insist others do exactly that for NATO’s objective ofdefeating Russia– whatever the cost, especially if non-NATO countries bear the burden, whether they want to or not.”

Last week, Rutte warned India, China, and Brazil of “consequences” if they continue to do business with Russia, after US President Donald Trump raised the issue of secondary sanctions on BRICS nations.

”My encouragement to these three countries, particularly is, if you live now in Beijing, or in Delhi, or you are the President of Brazil, you might want to take a look into this, because this might hit you very hard,” Rutte told reporters. (Yeah, why is NATO involved in monetary matters?)

Alipov said Rutte’s comments raise serious concerns aboutNATO’s overreach: “Why is the head of a transatlantic military alliance threatening India with American economic sanctions?”

Since 2022, India has significantly ramped up oil purchases from Russia and now ranks as its fourth largest trade partner.

Alipov noted that while theWest calls for Russia to be isolated, it continues to engage in energy trade with Moscow. “What is striking is that even while sanctioning India today and threatening even more severe measures tomorrow –Western countries themselves continue to buy Russian oil and oil products,” he said.

He defended Russia’s energy ties with India, arguing that Russian oil imports support India’s energy security, create jobs, and help stabilize global oil prices, which Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar previously noted.

(I think this whole “sanctioning” countries never worked and ultimately harms the countries that do the sanctions. Russia has proven it has no effect, it’s just used to smear and try to control sovereign countries. Europe has damaged their entire economy by sanctioning the products they buy from Russia, and they have to buy at higher prices other than Russia. And Economists and Banks say it’s a stupid idea because it harms the economies of their own countries. Plus all of Europe are still buying from Russia. They are virtue signaling. It’s tiresome, Russia has something like 29,000 sanctions on them throughout the years. It’s a stupid way to do negotiations.)

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that a total of 28,595 sanctions had been imposed on Russian companies and individuals in recent years– more than the total number on all other countries combined.”

Kremlin reveals details of Putin-Netanyahu call

The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria and the recent escalation between West Jerusalem and Tehran

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday in a phone callfocused on developments in the Middle East, according to the Kremlin. The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria and the recent escalation between Israel and Iran.

Moscow reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution of regional conflicts, the Kremlin said in a statement. Putin stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also offered Russia’s assistance in establishing dialogue between Israel and Iran following the recent conflict between the two nations.

Moscow is ready “to contribute in every possible way to finding a negotiated solution” to the tensions around the Iranian nuclear program.Putin and Netanyahu also agreed to continue the dialogue on pressing bilateral and international issues, the Kremlin added.

After Bashar Assad’s government fell late last year, Israel expanded its presence in Syria beyond the Golan Heights, citing the need to prevent hostile actors from gaining a foothold near its borders.

Earlier this month, the Israel Defense Forces also launched multiple airstrikes on the Syrian Defense Ministry in Damascus, claiming the strikes were in defense of the Druze minority in southern Syria.

Netanyahu and Syria’s interim leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, a former commander of Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militia, then agreed to a US-mediated ceasefire.

In June, Israel carried out US-supported air strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, triggering a retaliation from Tehran. The two countries exchanged strikes for 12 days.

Russia was among the few nations to contact both Israel and Iran immediately after the first strikes were launched, in an attempt to defuse tensions. It also proposed several compromise frameworks to all parties, according to Putin.

(This is how you know Trump and Putin are working together, to stop or prevent wars.)

Trump ‘schmoozes’ with world leaders on personal mobile – Politico

Direct contacts and banter have helped “build chemistry” and improve diplomatic results, the outlet has claimed

US President DonaldTrump has been conducting an unconventional form of diplomacy from his personal mobile phone, fielding direct calls and texts from world leaders, Politico has reported. Leaders get in touch to discuss geopolitical matters but also “just to schmooze,”according to the outlet.

During his first term, Trump reportedly surprised French, Canadian, and Mexican leaders by ditching the usual protocols and handing out his private number. The practice has continued in his second term, Politico wrote on Sunday.

”He’s talking to a lot of leaders way more than anyone realizes,” one source said. “A lot of the calls are about specific things, real business, but there’s also more informal, personal talk.”

Trump’s regular contacts reportedly include French President Emmanuel Macron, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

One source described a recent call between Trump and Macron as the two “bro-ing out” over the phone. “It was oddly amusing – Trump would say ‘Emmanuellllll’ and really draw out the L, and then Macron would go, ‘Donaldddddd’ and draw out the D,”the source said.

Frequent and mostly undisclosed phone and text chatsallow foreign leaders to “build more chemistry with Trump,” Politico noted. The approachreportedly helps improve personal relationships and leads to “more favorable outcomes.”

The spontaneity, however, tends to unfold on Trump’s terms, the outlet wrote, citing Finnish President Alexander Stubb flying to Florida for a round of golf and lunch in March.

Trump’s personal diplomacy also comes with risks. Last month, he posted screenshots of private text messages from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on his Truth Social platform.

American journalist Bob Woodward claimed in a 2024 book that Trump made as many as seven private calls to Russian President Vladimir Putin after his first term ended in 2021.

Woodward also reported that Trump sent Putin Covid-19 test machines for his personal use as the virus began spreading in 2020. According to the book, Putin told Trump not to tell anyone, but Trump said he didn’t care if anyone knew.

The Kremlin acknowledged the delivery in 2024 but denied the phone calls took place.

North Korea demands US recognize it as nuclear power

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of the country’s leader, said the rapport between her brother and Donald Trump is not a pretense to push denuclearization

The US must acknowledge that North Korea has permanently become a nuclear-armed nation, Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and a high-ranking official in the Workers’ Party of Korea, has said.

She also warned thatpersonal ties between her brother and US President Donald Trump should not be used to compel Pyongyang to denuclearize.

In a statement published by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Tuesday, Kim Yo-jong, who is vice department director of the party's Central Committee, cautioned that any future dialogue should be based on “the recognition of the irreversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state.”

Another prerequisite should be the understanding that Pyongyang’s capabilities and geopolitical environment “have radically changed” compared to Trump’s first term, which saw historic US-North Korea diplomacy, she added.

Any effort to deny this reality “will be thoroughly rejected,” Kim said, and thatNorth Korea “is open to any option in defending its present national position.”

She acknowledgedthat “it is by no means beneficial to each other for the two countries possess[ing] nuclear weapons to go in a confrontational direction.”

While acknowledging that“the personal relationship between the head of our state and the present US president is not bad,” Kim warned that “if the personal relations between the top leaders of the DPRK and the US are to serve the purpose of denuclearization, it can be interpreted as nothing but a mockery of the other party.”

“If the US fails to accept the changed reality and persists in the failed past,a DPRK-US meeting will remain as a ‘hope’ of the US side,” Kim concluded. (Trump may or may not respond today, I haven’t heard Trump talk about NK this term at all.)

Trump met Kim Jong-un three times between 2018 and 2019 in an effort to negotiate North Korea’s denuclearization in exchange for security guarantees and economic relief.Despite the unprecedented diplomacy, no lasting deal was reached and talks stalled.

North Korea is estimated to have around 50 nuclear weapons and insists that the arsenal is a vital deterrent against a potential incursion by the US and South Korea, which regularly hold military drills near its borders.
