Southport attacks
The Southport attacks refer to a mass stabbing that occurred on 29 July 2024 at The Hart Space, a community dance studio in Meols Cop, Southport, Merseyside, United Kingdom.
Seventeen-year-old Axel Rudakubana carried out a knife attack during a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance workshop attended by 26 children aged 6 to 11.
He killed three girls and injured ten others, along with two adults who tried to protect the children.
Axel Rudakubana: The perpetrator, born on 7 August 2006 in Cardiff, Wales, to Rwandan parents; he was 17 at the time of the attack and arrested at the scene.
He was initially charged with three counts of murder, ten counts of attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article.
Later, he faced additional charges under the Biological Weapons Act 1974 for the production of ricin and under the Terrorism Act 2000 for possessing an Al-Qaeda training manual, though police did not declare the incident a terrorist attack due to lack of established motivation.
Rudakubana pleaded guilty to all 16 charges on 20 January 2025 and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 52 years on 23 January 2025.
Victims: The three girls who died were six-year-old Bebe King and seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, who died at the scene, and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar, who died in hospital the following day.
Ten children and two adults were injured, with six children and both adults initially in critical condition.
Aftermath and public disorder: In the days following the attack, widespread misinformation circulated online falsely claiming the suspect was a Muslim asylum seeker, leading to riots in Southport and across the UK.
Protesters attacked a mosque in Southport, set police vehicles on fire, and clashed with officers, resulting in 39 officers injured.
Nearly 400 people were later jailed for offences related to the unrest.
Emergency response: The first emergency call was received at 11 BST; police arrived at 11 and arrested Rudakubana after he complied with orders to drop the knife.
A major incident was declared, involving multiple ambulance services, air ambulances, and hazardous response units.
Broader impact: The attack prompted national reflection on knife crime, online misinformation, and the Prevent programme.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a review of terrorism laws and the Prevent scheme after it emerged Rudakubana had been referred to the programme three times between 2019 and 2021 but was not accepted due to no identified terrorist ideology.
On the first anniversary, 29 July 2025, Southport marked the tragedy as the community continued efforts to heal.
