Moscow has taken the US president’s threats into account, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said, adding that Russia remains committed to peace

“We have taken into account President Trump’s statement yesterday,” Peskov told reporters on Tuesday, while refraining from making any “judgments” about the remarks.

Peskov noted that while Russia’s military operation will continue, Moscow remains “committed to the peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and to ensure our interests in the course of this settlement.”

Regarding the possibility of a meeting between Trump and Putin, which has been widely anticipated in the media in recent months, Peskov reiterated that the issue has not been raised in practical terms and is still not on the agenda.

He went on to say that Russia remains interested in rebuilding ties with the US, a process initiated after the two countries’ meeting in February, while acknowledging that progress has been slow.

“So far, the normalization process is proceeding sluggishly. We would like to see more momentum,” he said, adding that in order to “move forward, impulses are needed from both sides.”

Since entering office this year, Trump has said he respects both Russia and Putin and wants to find a quick diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis. In recent weeks, however, he has increasingly expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in the peace process and has resorted to sanctions threats against Moscow.

Russian officials have rejected ultimatums from Washington, warning that these threats only serve to prolong the war.

Netanyahu Now Plans To Annex Gaza, Bowing To Extremist Members Of Coalition

Having rendered much of Gaza uninhabitable and displacing a huge proportion of its population, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to propose a plan by which Israel will begin claiming parts of Gaza to be Israeli territory, with an eye on eventually seizing all of it. The scheme which is said to have President Trump's backing though also certain to trigger international condemnation is aimed at preventing his extremist ruling coalition from splintering, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which first reported on it.

Under the scheme, Israel will give Gaza political and militant group Hamas a short deadline for accepting a ceasefire. After Hamas refuses to accept Netanyahu's terms (which will likely be written to guarantee refusal) Israel will start annexing portions of Gaza, starting with the buffer zone it has created along the perimeter of the territory, before proceeding to claim more land in the north. Eventually, all of Gaza will be claimed as Israeli land, fulfilling the wishes of extremist ministers who are vital to Netanyahu's ruling coalition.

One of those powerful coalition members is Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionism party, which seeks to move the Israeli state closer to a theocracy. Smotrich is himself a West Bank settler who has long agitated for the annexing of that territory. In May, Smotrich told a settler conference that "Gaza will be totally destroyed," with all 2.3 million residents "concentrated" in the extreme south, where they will be "totally despairing" with "no hope" and "looking for relocation to begin a new life in other places."

Smotrich opposed Netanyahu's decision in the face of rising malnutrition and starvation in Gaza accompanied by growing global condemnation to even slightly increase the flow of food and medicine into the besieged strip. So did another minister of note: Itamar Ben Gvir, who leads the National Security Ministry, called Netanyahu's move "a capitulation to Hamas's deceitful campaign," and reiterated his demand that nothing at all be allowed to flow into Gaza, and for the IDF to conquer the territory and encourage the Palestinians to move to other countries. To get a sense of his extremism, consider that Ben Gvir infamously adorned his home with a photo of Baruch Goldstein, who mass-murdered 28 Muslims in the 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune apparently values vacation over confirming President Trump’s incredible nominees, including ones in the judiciary.

As The Gateway Pundit reported, Trump called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to cancel August recess to get his judicial nominees confirmed. The Senate traditionally takes a month-long vacation at this point in the year, even though they don’t work enough to begin with.

“Hopefully the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!! DJT” Trump wrote on July.

Thune previously said he would consider the president’s request. He seemingly understood the importance of getting nominees confirmed, particularly as black-robed tyrants appointed by Democratic presidents continue to sabotage Trump’s agenda single-handedly.

But Thune and the rest of the Senate have now made their choice, which should infuriate all conservatives.

Andrew Desidero of Punchbowl News reports that Thune will keep senators to confirm Trump’s nominees for a few days, but not close to the whole month.

Instead, Thune and the rest of the Senate GOP want to spend the rest of August selling the Big, Beautiful Bill to their constituents.

When most people read a peer-reviewed study, they assume it’s been vetted by impartial experts who have no ulterior motives. But what if that trust is misplaced? What if the very people tasked with ensuring the objectivity of scientific research are being paid—handsomely—by the industries they’re supposed to scrutinize?

A bombshell study published in JAMA last year reveals that nearly half of U.S. physician peer reviewers for four major international journals received over $1 billion in industry payments over just three years.1 Most of this money flowed to their institutions, but the implications are significant. These are the gatekeepers of scientific knowledge, the ones who decide what gets published and what doesn’t. And yet, they’re financially tied to the industries they’re supposed to regulate.

The Illusion of Objectivity

While peer review is considered the gold standard for scientific rigor, it’s not the impartial process we like to imagine. As Christopher Wallis, the study’s corresponding author, put it:

“Peer reviewers act as critical arbiters of the validity and relevance of peer-reviewed studies. Therefore, understanding the potential intellectual and financial relations that may affect their decision-making is key.”

If the people reviewing studies are getting paid by pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, or other industry players, can we really trust their judgments?

The JAMA study isn’t an outlier. A 2016 analysis in The BMJ found that two-thirds of clinical practice guidelines were written by authors with financial ties to industry.2 Another study in PLOS Medicine revealed that industry-funded trials are more likely to report positive outcomes.3 In other words, this isn’t just a few bad apples—it’s a systemic issue.

The Opaque World of Peer Review

One of the most troubling aspects of this problem is how hidden it is. As the JAMA study notes, “Publicly available information about peer reviewer conflicts of interest is rare.” Journals don’t typically disclose who’s reviewing what, let alone their financial ties. This lack of transparency makes it nearly impossible to assess the objectivity of the peer review process.

It’s not just reviewers. Editors and authors are often entangled in the same web of industry payments. A 2018 study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that 12% of editors at leading medical journals had financial conflicts of interest.4 Yet, these conflicts are rarely disclosed to readers.

Users of X – formerly Twitter – complained they were unable to view clips of police detaining activists in the UK, with messages on-screen saying it was ‘due to local laws’.

X even barred users from watching a powerful speech about grooming gangs which Conservative MP Katie Lam made to Parliament earlier this year.

Since last Friday, websites have been required to check users are aged over 18 before letting them access potentially ‘harmful’ material such as pornography or face being fined up to £18million.

But critics including US Vice-President JD Vance have said legislation introduced by the Tories in 2023 could be used to attack free speech.

After a demonstration outside the Britannia Hotel in Leeds on Friday, X users said it blocked arrest footage. They were shown the message: ‘Due to local laws, we are temporarily restricting access to this content until X estimates your age.’

Following a row over Essex Police allegedly escorting counter-protesters to a demonstration in Epping, West Yorkshire Police stressed it was not involved in censoring posts.

X has not commented but its AI chatbot Grok suggested the Leeds clip was restricted under the Online Safety Act due to violent conduct.

As X does not have an age verification process, for many, access to posts defaulted to ‘restricted’ mode.

Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf last night branded the Online Safety Act ‘the biggest ever assault on free speech in the UK’.

‘This Tory monstrosity hands unelected bureaucrats sweeping powers to censor content they disapprove of,’ he told the Mail.

Madeleine Stone, senior advocacy officer at Big Brother Watch, warned of a ‘catastrophic effect on free speech online’ with ‘intrusive new age checks to access a range of websites’.

A government spokesman said: ‘Free speech is fundamental to our democracy and we’ve taken robust action to protect it, including through the Online Safety Act.’

Violence Continues to Rage in Syria’s Suwayda, 1,448 Confirmed Dead

Red Crescent delivers aid as blockade of main highway creates shortages

While the violence in Suwayda is not as severe right now as it was earlier this month, the situation is far from resolved, and truce violations continue to be reported regularly. Some 1,448 people are now confirmed to have been killed in the violence, including 258 summarily executed.

The fighting began on July 13, in Suwayda’s Bedouin neighborhood of Maqus. Druze fighting groups accused the Bedouins of kidnappings, and the Bedouins also accused the Druze of kidnapping, calling in help from tribes in the surrounding area.

The situation escalated quickly. Syrian troops were sent in and sided with the Bedouins, participating in executions of Druze. Israel carried out attacks of the Syrian forces in the area as well, and the toll just soared, before multiple ceasefires were declared, none of which fully held.

Civilians are still being evacuated from some areas, and ambushes are being reported. Perhaps the most pressing matter, however, is that the Damascus-Suwayda Highway remains blocked, nominally to contain the violence.

It has had some limited success in that regard, but parts of Suwayda are also reporting growing shortages of essential goods. An aid convoy from the Syrian Red Crescent and the International Red Cross has dispatched to the area through the one open route that still hasn’t been blocked.

Over 100,000 people have been reported to have been displaced by the fighting. Water has been reported cut in some areas, and food and fuel are in short supply in some places. There is no timetable for reopening the governorate, and the situation may continue to worsen.

The Suwayda Governorate has also been effectively cut off from press coverage as well. International reporters are being denied entry, with the AP reporting that they got Syrian government approval to go in, but Ahmed Dalati, a locally appointed official, has blocked all access.

Putin Discussed Syria, Iran In Phone Call With Netanyahu

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 28 to discuss various developments in the Middle East, including recent sectarian violence in Syria and Iran’s nuclear program.

TikTok Hires Ex-IDF Instructor Erica Mindel to Censor 'Antisemitism'

TikTok, which is still facing being banned at any moment by the US, has hired former Israeli Defense Forces instructor Erica Mindel to "develop and drive the company's positions on hate speech" with a focus on combatting "antisemitism."

TikTok recently hired a new hate speech manager with long-standing ties to the Jewish community, the company confirmed to Jewish Insider, as the social media platform faces growing pressure to confront a sharp rise in antisemitic content.

The streaming platform enlisted Erica Mindel, a former State Department contractor who worked for Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the Biden administration’s special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, to join TikTok’s global public policy and government affairs team.

[…] In her newly created role, Mindel will “develop and drive the company’s positions on hate speech,” seek to “influence legislative and regulatory frameworks” and “analyze hate speech trends,” with a particular focus on “antisemitic content,” among other duties cited in an official job description shared by TikTok.

Mindel, who previously served as an assistant director of program development at the American Jewish Committee, according to her LinkedIn profile, had briefly worked for the special envoy’s office in the second Trump administration before she was hired by TikTok, the company told JI.

Mindel declined to comment on her new position, which was first reported by The Washington Free Beacon.

The role was initiated after a “high-level convening” the Anti-Defamation League “helped organize last year,” said Dan Granot, the ADL’s national director of antisemitism policy, who in a statement to JI on Sunday said the position was raised as “a key recommendation for all social media platforms” during the meeting.

“In a moment when too many social media platforms are scaling back efforts to fight hate, ADL welcomes TikTok’s establishment of a role focused specifically on hate speech and antisemitism,” Granot added, praising Mindel as a “trusted partner who understands the issue and the stakes, and someone we’ve worked with closely in the fight against online hate.”

"The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $178,200 – $330,480 annually," the job listing notes.

Mindel in 2021, in a video for the American Jewish Committee, described how she left America to make Aliyah in Israel and join the IDF.
