The US Treasury just sanctioned Alexandre de Moraes, a sitting justice on Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court, accusing him of weaponizing the judiciary to silence dissent, jail critics, and censor speech, even beyond Brazil’s borders.
It’s the first time the US has used the Global Magnitsky Act to target a judge in a democratic ally.
The charges are damning: detaining journalists without charge, ordering raids on political opponents, banning social accounts (including in the US), freezing assets, and launching what the Treasury calls a "witch hunt" against both Brazilian and American citizens…
